There is a delicious irony, but to be fair, "de rigeur" comes up over 100 times in a search of the New York Times 1851-1980 archive and 8 times in a search of The New Yorker's archive (although one of those is in a letter complaining about it as a misspelling ;-)).
I'd always prefer a few points off for being able to consistently spell tricky borrowed words for extra points in the fact checking, editing, and tone departments.
