I read this yesterday and hated this article so much for creating this anti-Chinese sentiment.

You touched on most points well but the thing that bothered me the most is that if this were a real phenomena, it wouldn't affect just Asian Americans, it would affect all Americans/Californians just the same, if admissions from American borns were dropping.

This was awesome, it's quite rare for Asians on TV to be shown to have so much depth, to be portrayed as if you knew them rather than just someone who fills an otherwise empty void.

That is one of the most horrid things I've ever heard of..

I guess if you want to look at the silver lining--it's better they get an abortion here, rather than be tossed aside or drowned...once they're born, and if I were a girl and knew that my parents would rather abort than raise me, I'm not so sure I'd want to be raised by them.

And for anyone who wants to turn this into a pro-life argument, parents in India/China have no problems disposing of their born children after finding out they're girls--and if you don't legally allow this then they can just as easily take this matter into their own hands or find a doctor somewhere who will perform it.

I think the idea of trying to "generalize" what an entire group thinks of another group is just as harmful as the thoughts themselves.

As you've managed to figure out, the opinions vary greatly, and this is no different than asking "What do Jews think of Asians" or "What do Asians think of blacks", simply by skimming a handful of posts on the internet and basing your opinion on that.

Imagine if people thought this was the majority opinion: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2007/02/27/HATE.TMP&ao=all

China has 1.5 billion people: hundreds of millions of which are living on dollars a day, the death penalty is given for the most basics of crimes, little girls are drowned because parents don't want them, children are forced into slavery at a young age, women are kidnapped or mislead into becoming life long prostitutes in other countries, and it a damn dog causes the author to tear up? I'm a fan of animals as much as anyone else, but can we get a little perspective on things here?

@maryt "About your first comment, it is just an overall statement about how women are being treated unequally in this situation."

But in Sweden, women are not the ones treated unequally, which is why I'm confused.

"By using items and drugs to compare to women, you are just objectifying women."

Wow this is so incredibly wrong and insulting.

If it were a male prostitute servicing women the comparisons would be exactly the same. If anything, the idea of making it 100% legal for a woman to literally sold as sex objects is much more objectifying.

If, in this world where prostitution (or any industry) is illegal, and the goal is to limit or eliminate it, and with your limited resources where you had to punish the supplier or demander---punishing the supplier would be easier and just as effective in eliminating it altogether--since the chain of demand is much greater in numbers than the supply.

If a drug dealer, or prostitute (let's assume he's a male) is the one being punished, and in order to convict you had to go through court, summon up a jury, and go through that whole ordeal--that would go a much longer way in dealing with the problem than doing the same thing to each of the demanders.

"However in Sweden, paying for sex is illegal, but selling it is not. No matter what, women are at a disadvantage and men should pay for the social cost they cause as well"

These two sentences don't make any sense..How are women at a disadvantage in the case of Sweden--and men are "paying" in more ways than one.

It is an interesting dilemma though, who is more responsible, the supplier or demander? When it comes to drugs, e.g. meth/heroin, it is a much greater crime to distribute than to consume. It's also much more illegal to be a supplier of stolen goods such as TVs/stereos than to purchase it.

I actually can't think of any scenario where the supplier, who is essentially creating and dictating the market isn't held more liable.

"But women should also not be penalized for what they choose their occupations to be."

This I disagree with, if you're doing something illegal and allowing it to happen, whether it's prostitution or drugs or whatever, why should you not face the consequences of your actions?

Race should be a factor in all facets of life and jobs.

Asians are completely underrepresented in Congress, any vote for an Asian should count for 3x as much as they currently do.

Not many Asians in the NBA or NFL either. There should at least be a proportionate amount of Asian athletes that equals their fan base to celebrate diversity. Whites can have this advantage too.

Wait, those don't make sense? Race should not be simply be a factor in determining who makes it or not and it should be up to merit? I AGREE.

Nice article. On the one hand I can understand actors doing what they need to do to get by, but if you want to actually make it one day I think it's important to stay true to yourself.

Ken Jeong and his roles as an absolutely loser of person who audiences are more inclined to laugh at rather than "with" is quite disappointing to me, given the level of fame he's reached.

Aziz once hosted an AMA on Reddit (Ask Me Anything) and his response to the stereotypes was great: http://www.reddit.com/r/reddit.com/comments/la5cl/i_am_aziz_ansari_comedian_and_actor_ama/c2r0iq5

@mwei True, I haven't seen the 2nd hangover or Transformers 3 (didn't know he was in that actually).

I think the cast typing of him in those roles is more dangerous because:

a) People are easily manipulated into buying into stereotypes. The less experience you have of a group of people, the more a single person within that group will influence your views on the group as a whole (if that makes sense)

For instance if an American has never met an arab/muslim person, or even a Harvard graduate or someone from say Texas, they'll have conceived their own stereotypes upon them--but you're from a community that's full of muslim people, your stereotypes will not be as easily influenced by one person

b) Being from California it's hard to remember that the rest of the US is only 6% Asian--so most Americans have met an Asian person before, muchless befriended one in their lives. So they end up resorting to the media, like the movies to conjure up what an Asian person is like.

So they see Ken Jeong on the screen, see that he's Asian, and it will be implanted in their minds that that is what an Asian male is like.

@mwei As a straight Asian male I do think he contributes to the "weak" stereotype, since most characters he plays are straight. In Community especially--he plays an absolutely weak, small, pathetic character who has no shame in himself.
