I (and my guts tell me, others) feel that if they get blocked from quality content on Site X, that there MUST be an equal substitute on some yet-unknown Site Y. ...so why put down a credit card today, when discovery of that Site Y could be tomorrow. And Site Y can be a pro or collection of 'amateur' sites.
Based on how liberated the content web had felt / been for the last 15-20 yrs, I think that expectation persists despite the gradual tightening of the wrench.
Bonobos pants (mens, khaki) are fantastically designed. I hope this new round, distrib channel doesn't make 'em too popular!
@bgoldberg cop out
Does Gawker / Gizmodo publicly flame Pando on their site? i know Denton does on Twitter, etc. -- but doesn't seem like he needs to bother on his own publications like Pando does. just curious because these personal spats are distracting and make it hard to differentiate viscera on Pando from meaningful reporting & opinion.
@YaronSamid ha, maybe i just have abandonment issues :-)
Major Bummer.
Sarah - Of the two ways to look at his departure - after investing time, money, and soul into NYC - do you side with the former or later? I'm sure it's tough to answer since he's both a friend and investor, but you also know his history with NYC...
@bgoldberg as i said, the business has proven it serves a very real need. i lived in SF 2007-09 myself and understand the pain.
but marching around with an err of entitlement, pissing off regs and taxi owners is, well, picking a fight with the same folks you actually need to be building partnerships with. and they don't yet have this overwhelming community of loyalists to fight these big fights with them yet (and i suspect ever).
There's something just so incredibly smug about Uber that really rubs people (well, at least me) the wrong way. It's as though they're provoking regulators and taxi companies with this holier-than-thou attitude while simultaneously rousing the populous -- who don't really care unless they're startup CEO's or VC's.
Someone should let them know they're not doing god's work. They just bring people a car for a little more money with less of a wait time...and do not represent the ideal manifestation of 'capitalism at work'.
Don't get me wrong....it's a great business that obviously has great demand. But seriously, there are better ways to grow a sustainable business than poking the proverbial cobra over and over again in every city where you want to do business for many years to come.
I really like a lot of Pando journalism, and I don't mean to be a jerk, but would it be possible to distill the firesides into a few less than 15 posts per?
Seemed pretty tasteful to me. Sure the Remington messaging is hokey, but didn't show any disrespect for the sport.
yelp has never had positive earnings - private or public. it's extremely helpful to many, but at some point, bills become due, right?
Glad you dismiss 'Entitlement' as an "old argument". It's overused far too much to imply the passion young people have is just immaturity. As an almost 30yo Gen Y'er myself, I feel assured that our generation very much has a living progressive agenda!
