I have a hard time finishing blog posts, personally. I'll get a great start and then just lose interest or get distracted working on something else. Because of that, I've started to use www.writtenkitten.com to write my posts, and then I put them into WordPress. What better motivation to actually finish a post when every 100 words, the page shows you a new picture of an adorable kitten?!
And I love your point about writing every day. The ability to write isn't only a talent, it's also a muscle. I can't expect to become a better runner if I don't go out and run on a regular basis, and I can't expect to become a better writer if I don't sit down and write - something - every day. Sometimes it's not a blog post, sometimes it's an email to a friend, a press release for work, or even some tweets - it doesn't matter because I'm still writing.

I've both sent and received Facebook gifts. It's a good way to add a special touch to that generic "happy birthday!" Facebook message, especially if the friend lives far away or you just don't know when you'll see them next. I think it's a great idea, and I only find them minimally annoying. I hope more brands get involved, to make them more personalized and even more effective.

Couldn't agree more. The days of "OMG everyone MUST be on XXX network, it's the next big thing" are over. It's time to take a step back and really think about which particular network will serve your client, your audience and your industry. Instagram is used differently than LinkedIn, and has a different audience. Does that mean there isn't value in both places? Of course not, but there might be more value for you in one more than the other. Research and knowledge about your industry and audience is so important now. You nailed it on the head when you said "works for one brand may not work for another."

@bradmarley I think those two go hand in hand, actually. It's really hard to create content if your writing skills aren't up to snuff. Alternately, it's a lot easier to learn to create good content if you're a good writer. But I agree, I don't think schools are focusing on the content creation side of it enough just yet.

@ginidietrich Totally agree! It also helps the applicant decide if they really do want to work for that company. Culture is important, and you can usually tell a company's culture by watching their social channels. It's a great (and easy) way to see if it'll be a good fit.
First of all, I agree with all of your points. People who still use page view counters should always accompany it with a bright pink glitter GIF.
Though I would add that by using Flash (and therefor blocking your mobile audience) you would lose a lot more than a quarter of your traffic.

Wow. Now I also feel the need to come out of the shadows of my lurking. But only to say that I love how you do Follow Friday. I don't see the point in reading anyone's recommendation unless they tell me why I should follow them, so thank you for doing that.

@jessicamalnik Unfortunately no. Just wasn't in the cards this year. Lots of things going on and work, you know the drill. Enjoy some breakfast tacos for me!

I second the need for chargers, but to take it a step further, you'll always be the most popular person in the room if you bring a power strip. Seriously. Also, wear comfortable shoes, because you will be walking a ton. And invest in mutlivitamins and probably some EmergenC. Don't get SXSARS.
My favorite Google Chrome Add On is called UnBaby.Me. It replaces all baby related Facebook posts with pictures of awesome things. Like cats. Or bacon.
