@ginidietrich this only confirms for me one of my goals for 2014. Last year, I had a situation where over communication would have (and should have) put to rest any uncertainty. Unfortunately, things got a little confused, feelings got hurt, and relationships strained. I know now that over communicating is better than no communicating at all. This includes putting to rest any rumors that may creep up so people aren't guessing when they actually have no idea. Lesson learned.

Happy birthday!

not much to disagree with this. Everyone needs to take ownership but to your point someone needs to coordinate it all.

Great tips Gini! All great reminders of how to build yourself or your brand. As I've done this for some of the brand social accounts I manage, it truly is about finding where your customers are and building the audience on that social tool.

Thanks as always! This is a great one to share!

What's funny is that although your online habits have not changed, your strategy hasn't. I've always thought of social as the initial step in meeting someone with the ultimate goal to meet in person. This not only helps you develop relationships you've made online but has helped you grow the business like you mentioned.

I think about how you and I met. It want until we met in person that I think our friendship truly developed. Great post as always Gini.

I love how you have transformed the company with this. It is amazing that there still exists the need for face time vs. measuring success based on performance at some larger companies.

More importantly, I appreciate how you tested it for a year and then revisited it again. That is the crucial step that often gets lost.

PR, Communications, Digital Marketing Agency, whatever...as long as a premium is put into it, it will work for you. I just don't understand why some are resistant to it. This piece of marketing is so measurable and your can create some very valuable insights and strategy based on data rather than guessing.

@ginidietrich I don't think it's naive at all.  I'd love for a candidate to try it.  In the political ad industry, it could be thought of as revolutionary much like when Obama truly became the first "social POTUS."

Frustrates me to no end.  On both sides, I wish they would focus on the good they could do if elected...what they would do to end poverty, improve the economy, etc. rather than try and discredit the opposition.  Someone else telling me how bad someone or something isn't going to make me change my mind.  We vote for a reason and I'd rather vote based on what candidates do or have done rather than what they say.

Unfortunately, it's still politics and I still have a hard time trusting candidates I support.

I definitely think geo location has changed since the days of just telling people where you are.  I find it even more relevant when I see that friends have checked in and left tips.  Now that Foursquare has updated itself, I find myself going there more and "liking" and leaving comments on people's check ins (ahem...like yours).

Great post!  Small businesses should definitely try to leverage this more!

@ginidietrich@HowieG I'm cheering for the Broncos since the Lions have been eliminated. Mainly I like Tim Tebow and that's why I'm rooting for Denver, a team @ginidietrich dislikes about as much as the Packers apparently.

Even though you're not speaking to me until after the Super Bowl (because I was cheering for the Broncos and Tebow), I'm glad you wrote this! I still can't believe Boners BBQ did what they did! The "apology" is a bit pathetic and they are still feeling the effects of it on Twitter too. I hope they learned their lesson. By the way, here is the review from Stephanie S. on Yelp. Not sure if it warranted the response Boners BBQ gave her...

I was just talking to someone about this today! It's so easy to get distracted on the task at hand when you are constantly being alerted with e-mails, tweets, facebook alerts, google reader, etc.

Productivity has definitely suffered with technology today...I think it does take people longer to get things done than before.
