You've probably seen me before: I'm a Millennial/GenY Community Manager. A Social Media and SEO pro, who tinkers with websites and blogs in her off hours. In short, I'm your typical nerd stew.
I think having Brinker leave (but not leave, just take a different seat in the boardroom) wasn't a very effective plan. I think they would have had better success with reputation repair if they skipped that empty gesture and went straight for a discussion of how they learned more about their core base of supporters than they had known before; that Brinker herself had a renewed sense of duty toward women and their complete health.That kind of gesture, apology, action and return of support to their community would have, in my opinion captured more flies. I don't think it matters who is the CEO - that decision wasn't singularly executive. I think it matters who the foundation is here to serve and how they carry out that service.I think replacing the CEO is scapegoating and pins the decision to remove support from PP, and the opposition to restoring support to PP squarely upon one person'e shoulders, when in reality it couldn't have happened that way.I ramble, but my point is that making a real recovery from this problem means more than changing SGKC's hat. SGKC needs to discuss and prove that they have shifted their focus from being "what our CEO wants" to "what our community of volunteers and contributors want" and ultimately "what ensures a healthy female body."

@Erika Napoletano there is a LOT of inspiration and leadership to be gained from people right under your nose. People who didn't wait for a court case that made America mad, but who have diligently been building inroads into the dank dark backrooms where the "real lobbying" happens. Picking up the reins from them is both terrifying and a "too-slow/too-fast" process that absolutely MUST be done. it's not a sexy march or boycott or one-and-done march on the capital steps.....it's lunches and certificate banquets and endless week-long meetings to review literally a 4" binder agenda and materials.We have all these ideas to try to re-burrow the holes into the damaged system from the outside....but some of us are in a prime position to RECEIVE a prime position from a warrior who ready to retire from the fight.

Right the eff on, Erika. I find it disgusting that those "in power" will flippantly use their position to incite fury from their opponents AND STILL BLAME THE OPPONENT FOR THE RESULTING FURY. ...AND GET. AWAY. WITH IT.
And i was just thinking on a drive yesterday while listening to a law professor break down the legality and actionability of this latest affront to personal safety with the full support of "the law".... Throughout my life, my father has played a persistent, insistent role in the state of KY fighting against this very thing. The *perception* of minorities in the state. And let me tell ya, it has been a thankless investment of his time from most sides except from within the minority community. His continuous work meant there was something to rally around, support and build together. And it took a LONG time for me to appreciate all the time he spent in service to others. Living as the example in your community is an ambitious GOAL, let alone a great starting place.
Well put, Gini. Getting rid of those silos (or at least putting wide doorways in) is the biggest imperative.
We have to keep communicating that collaboration and internal transparency isn't a loss of control, or inviting more supervision.
@PegFitzpatrick that behavior is deceptive no matter who it comes from. i was always advocating full credit where possible. and it's always possible to do SOME due diligence. Even if it's to add in a source link in the post or if it's a graphic like this, then credit to the source in the text on the graphic....
To me, it just makes no sense to cut off an inroad to a future content/promotion partnership.

@AmyMccTobin @Soulati | Hybrid PR @TurnerBarr I'm feeling like it may have been someone's idea that they had no control over. It passed through hands that prefer to rely on "proven" strategies and that means "copy what worked"... idea stealing (possibly) is a part of their company culture.
I doubt (maybe unfairly) a senior member of the marketing team saw Barr's work and thought "totally viable, we should do that!" I think it was something discussed and discussed, and pitched within the team using Barr as the example and then the person with the idea being overruled on how to proceed with their own version of it.

Dunham has her own issues of perceived impropriety, however, her tweet DOES sum it up perfectly. I was just conversing with a friend about this, and what really confuses me is that Tonto didn't have to BE Johnny Depp. And then again, it did.Because did we discuss that the role itself cannot be played with sensitivity by a non NA, and can't be believable when played by a NA (because of the "Hollywood sellout" aspect that the actor in question would face).
I do equate this role as Johnny Depp safely trying out black-face. Because in the end, this movie is another rehash of one of America's most beloved movies, Breakfast at Tiffany's - where Mickey Rooney mocked & mimicked his version of an Asian man.
And @AmyMccTobin , I think there AREN'T bigger problems to be calling out, personally. Because such a sprawling myriad of problems sprout from this root issue: people find other cultures, ethnicities and heritages LESS VALUABLE, and therefore undeserving of the RESPECT that is foundational for humane treatment and policies of all kinds.(end rant)

First: if you host an event, @ginidietrich, you may rest assured that I will be present, come hell or high water (or snow or that biting, ridiculous face-peeling Chicago wind). So that's settled. (also: DO THIS.)
Secondly, I am very interested in seeing a he/she video series. Two viewpoints (now with a variety of differences from male/female to agency/in-house) are very valuable in discussing digital marketing, especially when one has so much content to take in on a daily basis. Pulling in two bits of current advice in one place makes a LOVELY offering for visitors and for new audience discovery.Third, the last idea I'll call out for you to implement is networking with new groups. I think this will be the hardest of all, but when you succeed, building a presence and authority in a setting/group that isn't seeded with adoring fans like myself, it will shake that shroud that many speakers and authors have in this industry: once you start talking the talk, you forget entirely about walking the walk.
I hope as you go along, it'll ignite the fire for other business to follow suit and start spreading knowledge of best practices even further.

Well that part at the end - it sums up a good client/agency relationship.
You're right that firms need to start bringing new ideas. But brands and businesses need to find and connect to an agency they can place their trust in - so that the great ideas can be implemented. I think it's too easy to say "clients need to trust their agency" because there are legitimate mis-matches that happen between the two and it's up to the brand to find the agency they can trust, then be bold in that trust. Goodwill - that's the word I'm looking for!

@Erroin interestingly, I'm told by a friend in YUM! HR that every hire at the corporate level has to do a rotation of working (in the trenches) at a branch store (at least one, in their brand, and possibly more). She, herself, had the responsibility of working briefly on an international training trip to China. And she reports the CEO of the company is also an author with grand, infections vision as well.
The thing is, you're going to have weeds in every garden. I agree with you that integrity is tested and proven at every level in management - and agree with Erika that the culture at that establishment, as cultivated by the management, is indicative of a weed in the garden. This company needs to look at more than just that kid and his actions. They need to ferret out the reason that employee took a number of the liberties involved in that picture.
PS: i really enjoyed the season I got to watch of "Secret Boss." It does a marvelous job of showing the employment experience of a front-line-worker, and showing management the true effects of "policy."

@Danny Brown @thebrandbuilder i definitely read both of these Danny (and Olivier). So I'm glad you brought the links into this discussion. I hate how the social web is so fractured. But I love how there are many who go out of their way to point out the old habits of our culture, too. Yeah, no extra comments here, just a bunch of compliments.
You've articulated a thought that I've had on simmer for a few "list cycles" Marjorie. I admit to scanning the power influencer and most notable lists first for the (for lack of a better term) variety, before going back to comb through for the familiar.
I often used these lists when starting out in social media, to discover accounts that I thought would bring added value to my twitter feed. Lots of them WERE good follows and I'm happy to call some of these guys my friends today.
I know now the lists serve as another layer of marketing in so many cases they need to be taken with a grain of salt. But I also know people are on-boarding and looking for the "directions" and these lists are somewhat of a starting point and an inspiration for brands and individuals who want to make the biggest impressions. In the end, i remind myself that people are people no matter where you put them. If we're looking at an American outlet, it's going to review and congratulate American members. But if we look at Asian, European, Australian, Middle Eastern outlets, I would expect that they will also highlight those in their member base, too. I think we have to be the change we want. When we start pushing for a true amalgamation of global social, we will start seeing the information we consume addressing more global interests. Did that even make sense? I know what I'm trying to say, but it's hard to make it sound easy.
@AmyMccTobin @jureklepic @Danny Brown it think whatever conversations we have, given that ours is a fractured, young industry, might be moot in the larger SM community until there is a "governing/accrediting" structure in place for SM Pros. What say you? Social Media Professionals of America? As yet, there isn't a "badge" one can flash to be taken as a credible SM Professional. PRSA has APR accreditation, and IABC has its own process. Food for thought.

@prosperitygal I agree, taht line has to be defined by the individual, but also to a certain point by the SM Pro community at large: when you make yourself a personal Brand, these are the qualities we're applying to you, these are the perceptions that go along with that.
I think making clear distinctions between "person FOR brand" and "person AS brand" is essential for us in the public space to move forward. We should set a definitive social media policy, huh?
Maybe i'm calling for regulation when really people should just apply a "common decency" filter to their own mouths though...
I think people are swayed by their own aversion to be odd-one-out and follow along with the few fierce loyalists, and that's what fills out the mob. It's sickening to watch the mob take shape, but if you've watched the movie "Mean Girls" you can see why one person, after winning over a few key leading leaders, can manipulate a whole mob to their will.
In the landscape of Social Media, we have to even add more questions: how personal can we be in our Professional Brand? Because we like to see ourselves as "genuine" and taking one comment over the line is what gets us in trouble. We have to decide whether we, as Personal Brands, can be our true, complete, unmasked selves, or if we need to tailor ourselves into our Brand, removing the extreme or offensive opinions and actions from our whole being, knowing we represent our Personal Brands 24/7.
These are easy questions to answer in relation to a Corporate Brand. But Personal Brands are in a gray, undefined area right now, which you've uncovered with this post, Amy.

I will never understand how people can buy into their own hype. I just don't understand it, and I never will.It's all i can comment right now. I didn't know that exchange took place but as we enter this medium, and connect with people with such vast experience outside social media, how can any user think anyone with expertise about good conduct has already joined and created little empires (as i trail off into a ranting, raving, mumbling tangent...) ??Bringing it back to the point - I just don't get how people get convinced that their own hype is true and genuine? It's just a number beside your name. Settle down.
I agree with this - I actually just tweeted my first swear word over the weekend of almost 18,000 tweets. It didn't feel great, but I felt it was appropriate for the subject. I went back to my original purpose for creating my Twitter account before pressing the "publish" button. To your #9 comment (Serving) I think this is the best way to lead in this day in age. A leader that is perceived as "out of touch" can only pass judgement and blurt out far-reaching goals......but for what? When the leader has no concept of the concerns of those he/she is leading, their advice and "wisdom" is nothing more than so much hot air. For the leader to make the impact he/she wants to make, their connection to their constituents HAS to remain strong. it is entirely possible to be humble without being weak. The leader who serves is the one who knows WHAT can be accomplished and HOW. That is powerful.

I highly agree. I kept wanting to know what the huge deal was about her taking the CEO position, as surely we have heard of the Wal*Mart/SAMS Club CEO, Rosalind G. Brewer - or the Xerox CEO, Ursula M. Burns.....Not young, spry, soon-to-be-mother-37-year-old women but certainly in our day & age they still represent palm trees in a dessert. (can I copyright a metaphor? that one is SOLID.) And I can only note the interesting bit of the situation for me: what dissatisfaction at Google led her to join the competition? WAY more interesting than "DID YOU KNOW SHE HAS A BABY FACTORY IN HER TUMMY?"

Margie, every point you made is fair and true. it is EXTREMELY frustrating to hear the "noise" which in my mind equates to the static on the radio when you're driving between cities. You know what I'm talking about. That 15 minutes between two metro areas when NO stations actually tune in... And to your ending question, I have to apply the same logic that small-town radio DJs do: someone out there is listening, someone is depending on these words, someone is being moved to action. no - it doesn't create a tsunami wave of support, or an outcry of willing able bodies ready to fling themselves into the cause, but beyond creating wealth for our nations private enterprises by working every day to pay for our creature comforts, such as.....electricity provided by private enterprise and the clean water provided our local, state & federal governments....all most of us can do is contribute to a unified demand on our governments to address this thing we just saw on the internet that makes us very unsettled.It's a harsh yet practical yet cowardly yet brave truth of life in the united states.
