@3HatsComm Hi Davina! Thanks for stopping by! I agree, in theaters = spoilers. But I do think there is a small window for it. Like say the first few weeks after release. As far as TV shows, that is different. Many people as well as the show runners and/or networks themselves live tweet during major episodes. Often time he shows have official hashtags for live tweeting purposes. I feel the only safe way there is to stay off social media or use a filter!

As for books. I feel as though book readers should never spoil a show or movie. Books are often released so far in advanced and in many cases carry two different audiences. Not to mention readers have different interpretations of books and in many cases the show or movie can vary wildly!

When we get new clients whom we have met thru some sort of social media, a common theme arises. They always say the liked getting to know a bit about us personally, made us feel more real and not "Stereo-typical programmers" and thus they were more comfortable. Made conversations about technology that they were not experts on easier, because they felt as though they were talking to a friend versus a intimidating, out of their league developer.  They felt "knowing" us better put the conversations more on their level so to speak.

Now onto over communicating.  It's like the labels on products warning consumers to not do stupid, unintended things with items.  You know the ones warning us to not eat electronics, no putting people in washing machines, do not put near a open flame, etc. The ones that always make us shake our head and say "Really? Someone would do that!?".

Admittedly I am NOT a football person. My Superbowl Sunday is about cooking all my families favorites that they don't get to eat all year because I have them on almost 100% healthy clean eating.  But, I do enjoy watching the commercials and talking about them on Twitter. Now the Stanley Cup Finals, thats another story!

However, I felt this years ads to be not so entertaining.  Ones I did like were:  1: Ellen/Beats - Like you said who doesn't love Ellen dancing??  2. Girl Power- DUH I am a Mom of 2 girls, plus it was darn cute. 3. Radio Shack - I am a 80's fanatic so I loved all the references and nostalgia, but I did find it sad they were advertising how outdated they were. And even sadder still is that even Best Buy is slumping so chances of them making a comeback are not as good as the ad. 4. The Budweiser "Best Buds" - I always love the Clydesdales and who couldn't love that cute little puppy!!   And, of course a honest, honorable mention to David Beckham and H&M!

I was sad that my go to M&M commercial didn't live up to past commercials.  And, felt there were far too many car commercials.  With the score being so dominant and lackluster ads it was a sleepy kinda evening for me.  Well that and my kids got me playing "Flappy Bird"...talk about a frustrating game!!

Ah, @Howie Goldfarb Really, where to even start?

I met him here many moons ago.  I believe the banter started when he found out I was from Chicago like Ginil and we would have all those fun Chicago Hot Dog conversations.  I remember thinking that his long, entertaining comments here definitely fit the bill of being called "alien"! HA.

While those hot dog conversations were always wildly entertaining our friendship kicked into high gear in 2010...the year the Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup.  You see, if you don't know Howie is a Islanders fan! Sigh, at least he likes hockey!

It's always fun to be greeted with a random tweet from Howie about hockey and or hockey stats.  Or random food truck and Chicago stereo-type tweets.  It's entertaining to try to figure out how @ginidietrich and I got involved in a Twitter conversation randomly only to figure out it started out with something about Chicago.

You can always count on Howie for a laugh or a good lesson on some random topic, since as Gini mentioned he is so brilliant.  I even recall comments on here from him on different statistics, etc that would make my brain melt!

Few people deserve 2 Follow Fridays (hey some of us are hoping & praying for 1) but Howie is deserving! If you don't follow him you seriously must! He is fun, intelligent and spontaneous for sure!

Oh what a fun post!! My additions would be the following:

1. Rasheed. Mariam's husband from "A Thousand Splendid Suns" by Khaled Hosseini. What he puts Mariam and Laila through is despicable!

2. Mr. Celie's husband from "The Color Purple" by Alice Walker. Again another despicable husband.

3. Lord Voldemort from "Harry Potter".  I agree with Umbridge, but how can it not be Voldemort as well?

4. Annie Wilkes from Stephen Kings "Misery".  OMG, reading that scared the bejesus out of me. And don't even get me started on Kathy Bates portrayal!! YIKES!

I think you have a spectacular list. There are some books I need to reread off that list or experience for the first time. How do such people exist?  I think those people should be getting the boxed set for Christmas with a required reading mandate!

@ginidietrichYes, you "Can" have a website, and it might take a 100 hours vs 20 hours,  but chances are not be of professional quality, just like doing your own PR. You "Can" but should you and will it be the same?

I guess my point goes right back to your question : "So, you tell me, would you rather spend your time growing your business and getting a return for your investors..." or would you rather spend a 100 hours building a website that may have problems or security vulnerabilities?

10 months, 2 weeks ago on The PR Firm Debate: Should Startups Hire One or Not?

Reply

Ah the choices start-ups have to make. What to spend their limited cash or precious time on and what to hire someone else to do for them?  I agree with Mark Cuban on many things just like you do.

In my tech world we see a similar issue as this.  We see people advising startups to do their own websites or tech, programming etc. They are advised that WordPress is the answer to all your problems and anyone can learn to do it, and no developer is needed.  Many developers/programmers we know say well if the PR/marketing people can be developers and designers why cant we do our own marketing/PR?

You mentioned above what happens when 10 media outlets want you, etc.  Same with tech. What happens when you have been hacked or a e-commerce security issue? I have seen it on Twitter thousands of times.  A small PR or marketing firm in a panic because their site is down or has been hacked and they are pleading with someone to help them.  Many times because they chose to forego using a developer and do it themselves.

It's a fine line for startups to navigate. How to determine what is the best use of their resources, from PR, marketing, technology, etc.

10 months, 2 weeks ago on The PR Firm Debate: Should Startups Hire One or Not?

@jasonkonopinski Well, I have seen this. But, we never fell into this category. Sometimes I think developers feel this way towards PR or marketing firms because those types of folks/firms feel they don't need to hire us for the same reason Cuban said not to hire PR. They feel that with the growth of Wordpress they can handle all of their web, programming, tech stuff.  Many preach you can teach yourself the tech and save time and money.  I know many a tech firm who says whats the difference? Why waste your time doing your web but not your PR or as @ginidietrich mentioned Payroll, accounting etc?

@3HatsComm I have read the naysayers over on the Disney board. IMO, most of them havent used it yet. They just dont like change. I firmly believe Magic Bands & FP+ will be available to offsite guests, just maybe at a reduced volume.

I have been going to Disney since I was 5. I have stayed offsite & on, and now we are DVC members. I have zero desire to stay offsite. Too me, yes Disney is $ but I also feel we get what we pay for.  I dont view it as a "have/have not". Disney has accommodations for varying budgets.  And, if the benefits of the new system is something that appeals to a traveler, then stay on site if thats the only way to get the benefit.

As I mentioned in the blog. I feel as though the system enhanced our stay.  This is from someone who went pre FP for years, regular FP's and now FP+. Also, being  a tech company, I think the advancements are outstanding!

Thanks for stopping by & sharing your thoughts. Let me know if you get to try the bands/FP+.

Great points. When we started SYDCON, we did it with Dave working full-time as a web developer at another firm. That firm actually got us started. They do a lot in the community and would lend him out to non-for profits, etc. Well we started building a big client base as a result. We were getting to the point that the income from SYDCON was exceeding the income at his very well paying (great benefits) full-time job. So, we had to decide if we could take the plunge.  Mind you, at that time I was a stay at home mom & we had to kids under 5, mortgage, etc. Well, we decided to do it and banked every penny from the "side-work" and when we had 6+ months  worth of money for expenses we took the leap.

5 years later, we are going strong.  But, there are lots of things you mention above that we had no experience with, just like you.  I think many of those things on your list are thing entrepreneurs hate to do and just naturally avoid them until they cant anymore.

@EricPudalov @sydcon_mktg I agree, dont try to cover up or hide from a review that calls out a legitimate problem or issue with your product or service. None of us are perfect. I think a new potential customer who saw that response to a bad review would think the responding company cared about issues with their product and respected their clients point of view.

If I was a customer of a company that publicly addressed my concern and worked diligently to fix their mistake, I would remain a customer, previous error or not. We all make mistakes, its all in how you handle it in the end.
