The same dialog can happen internally inside a big company as well, where the product people don't want the money at any cost, but where the sales team is under pressure to reach their budget.
If the sales team keeps winning the argument then over time the product dies slowly, or never takes of.
This happened on multiple occasions in a company I once worked for.
