Dear esteemed Colts Authority staff,

Thank you for essentially wiping my Friday off the work-map. It's like other such sports-related commitments (March Madness, World Cup, etc.) that have the misfortune of happening during work hours.

Downloaded this morning w/the intent to begin reading tonight (because that's what lame old people consider Friday night fun). No such luck. Already 20% though it.

You may be hearing form some corporate attorneys shortly.

Regards,

Matt

@codrutc  Yes, great motor. Looks like a great apprentice for Mathis to mentor. But much like how any given movie trailer can make the most awful movie worth watching, I've gotta remind myself to watch the highlights with a grain of sand.

Great collection of Griff gifs.

Seriously though - his burst that you pointed out on the screen pass is killer. Too many times you'll see a player get set and then decide where to run vs determining the path *as* they attack the space.

@Pied@Fot Bollar @Fot Bollar I noticed a couple times this year where DHB played the "cheerleader" role very well, and I mean that in all seriousness. For such a highly touted (see: Irsay twitter madness) FA signing, and such a hard (but predicted by a lot of folks) fall from grace, DHB seems to have held on to the right "team" attitude, as illustrated by his success on ST and previously mentioned "cheerleading".

If he is resigned as an inexpensive insurance WR (really, who's going to sign him for big money now?), he and Sergio could battle it out for ST stud, and wreak havoc on the league in the process.

@RyanOkuno And seriously, what about TRich's run around left end in the 2nd half? You know the one - where he had the edge, but hesitated and made the blocked & falling LB look like a hero by tackling him. That was unbelievable.

Thought for a moment there in #1 that you were going to propose Pagano will bring in Choice (Tashard) off the bench before Richardson and use him as the rolling ball of a thousand paper cuts. Anyone tracked what kind of action he's seen since he was signed?

Bethea's TD saving tackle was beyond huge... followed by the goal-line stand. Otherwise, really, where was the Defense? It's commendable that, as poorly as they were shredded in the first half (props to Smith, who played a fantastic game), the were able to make the necessary stops in the second half.

@smonroe Would love it if these young WRs were following Reggie around, studying the Book of Wayne. Reggie was the valedictorian at the Harrison school, to be sure - studied under the master for years. With the fluidity of the WR corps for the past few years (Garçon, Collie, Gonzalez...), you sure hope some of the younger WRs we have on the roster now are paying close attention. Who knows how much longer he'll be teaching?

And that first example of Wayne's route running is just ... wow. Perfect. I know we've seen it before, but, something to point out about this is that not only is it a great sharp route, but it's also executed perfectly bc Reggie knew his opponent. As a physical DB, Sherman needs only one straight ahead step from the WR to engage and start jamming him, and Reggie didn't even allow him to get that. Reggie's first step forces Sherman to react to the lateral movement. The result is that Sherman's first big step turns his hips away from the play, and Reggie's is golden. I know you can't see the wide view here, but it even makes you wonder how many YAC he could have gotten had Luck led him a bit more.

And now I weep for the games lost to Reggie's knee.

agree that the Bengals are probably 1 and done in the playoffs, but I have little faith that the Colts fare much better. Depending on matchup and if they're able to 'figure anything out' in these last 3 games, I'll give them 1 win at best.
These aren't the Colts of old - where Peyton could overcome a porous defense with "Star Wars" numbers. Not that Luck couldn't - but his coaches won't let him.... at least they won't let him until he's down 2+ scores.
I find myself already looking to next season. And I'm worried about that too.

@Payton @MarcusDugan This comment reminded me of one of DB's 5 yd runs on first down. I don't even recall at what stage in the game it was or on which frustratingly pointless (literally) drive it happened ... but he was hit after a 2-3 yd gain, maybe. Kid kept driving his legs and pushing and, sure enough, took at least 2 defenders forward for an extra 2-3 yds. Impressive, for our "speed" guy.

@chip_bennett @MarcusDugan @unitas19 The Bengals are absolutely loaded - defense and skill positions. The one glaring exception is Dalton, and he's no scrub. Dude is just so ridiculously inconsistent, and, as you say, very easily rattled.

When they win, they to do so convincingly. Just seems like they should be able to do that on a more consistent basis. Must be some of the Cleveland curse creeping into Cinci.

@DISPLACED_COLTS_FAN The thing is, though, the opposition HAS been changing their approach at half. Seattle comes to mind – Lynch was having his way running the ball in the first half. I don't know/have the stats, but iirc he barely touched the ball in the 2H. Same w/CJ last night.

I do like your thinking re: the offense looking for its identity and using the remainder of the schedule to make adjustments and "find" it. Let's just hope they continue to win while doing so. The AFC is so bad, we have a shot at a first round bye ... and as long as that's in my head, I'll have a hard time lowering expectations.

What can I say? I'll admit it - like most long time Colts fans, I've been spoiled.

9 months, 2 weeks ago on Good News Tuesday Infographic: Colts lose to the Rams

The FOs stubbornness for not surrounding Luck with an absolute Berlin-wall of an offensive line is absolute insanity. This could turn into a tome-length post, so suffice to say I believe it all start w/that - a protected QB with time to throw, holes for RBs to run through, etc.

It's after a loss like this one (plus the 1H of the Texans game) that I start to wonder about the bigger picture. We will most likely win the division. But that gives me no more confidence in this team than discussing how the playoffs are a "crapshoot". I sense an impending 1-and-done and cries of "he can't win the big one ..." ... "he's a great regular season QB, but ...". Sound familar?

Speaking of familiar, does anyone else feel as bad for Peyton that he's essentially stuck on what is quickly looking like the mid 2000 Colts? Lots of receiving talent, soft defense, questionable O-line. Not that I'd trade the success of that Colts era, but man, as long as we got/get our W against the Broncos, I was hoping he'd have an easier ride.

The Satele frames are as hilarious (he literally looks like he's moved only~3' from frame 1 to frame 2) as they are scary (the free shot on Luck he gave up). Still amazes me that Grigs thinks he's our best answer at center.

Great concept and post, btw. And nice insight on Doyle. I know we all understand how vital Havili is to our offense, but if Pep insists on running so many 'heavy' sets, maybe he should consider giving Doyle some of Havili's snaps.

But let's be honest here, if "run first" means we try a run on the first play of the game... only to box up the running portion of the playbook for the remainder of the game (including the time killing 4Q drives) ...well, I think a lot of us would be fine with that.

Not to hijack your post @Lou Pin [ Imma let you finish ;) ], nice work, as always ....

This is as good a spot as any to parrot what I heard Cowherd say a bit ago on the radio. Really? Cowherd? Yeah, I know, I'm not typically a Colin Blowhard fan, but he is all over Luck's strap, so I tolerate him. Anyway, he put the Colts at 6 in his "top 10" solely bc of Luck and quickly recapped who we had lost to injury this year:  2 starting OL, 2 starting RBs, superstar WR, superstar TE. Yikes.

When you consider that injury list, and the fact that we essentially have ZERO run game yet still sitting atop the division at 6-2 with the 'toughest' games in the rearview...well, we're in great position to take advantage of remaining 8 games to fix what's broken. Let's just hope Pagano & Pep do that.

Wonder if Asomugha would be interested in joining the #noflyzone...
