@StephenMGodar I believe a legal gun owner was very much involved in this latest massacre. The son's access and ability to use mom's guns was a direct contributor. See my comment regarding opportunities for tech to actually prevent such misuse... No reason for us to live in the past, if we want to move forward. Yes, mental health is an issue, but both mental health and ready-access to guns needs to be addressed.

Right on Ron, and right on Sarah! and... Technology Absolutely has a role it can play here within the next 5 years.
Technology can solve some real problems -- from the very simple like a national gun registry which currently doesn't exit. To the more complex, like biometric locks to prevent a firearm from being used by anyone not registered and routinely re-certified to use it. This may sound like sci-fi, but check-it, you can already buy this home-brew finger-print sensor for $75 http://www.adafruit.com/products/751 it can certainly be mass produced in the right form factor for much less.
The biggest thing about this is having the will to actually do something, rather than checking out or giving up.
Not sure all the companies mentioned are thought of as NYC based, you may want to double check...
