The NY fan, in general, has a "what have you done for me lately" attitude.  Do well on the ice, field, court, and they'll cheer ... otherwise, you'll find them at the bar... byproducts of being jaded NYers, and the astronomical cost of tickets.

Yeah, I'd take a one year flyer on him, but that's it.  I'd prefer size + speed.  Clowe only satisfies one of the two...and coming off 3 bell-ringings, that size might be mitigated.

Agree with Josh there. Having Zucc and Richards on the line to handle the puck helps Pyatt get off the wall. You'll note that the past 3-4 games Richards has started skating again and making smarter plays with the puck.  When Richards and Zucc are skating and handling the puck well, that allows Pyatt a little freedom from wall-play so he's not mucking and grinding the whole shift.

@PenaltySh0t  @gravey94 Unfortunately, if there's not lane to the stick side, and the goalie is giving you the glove side...you're gonna shoot where you see net. Kudos to him for showing it, then taking it away. I agree with the passing.  It was awful all game.  It was bad in the Piles game too, but the Piles played strong in the middle of the ice. Last night we had more blocked and blind passes for turnovers than I'd seen all season.  They voluntarily gave up more possessions than they were forced to give up.

Torts whipped out the Pop-O-Matic for line combos last night. Glad they got the 2, but the defensive lapses in front of Hank have me wishing for a speedier recovery for Mr. Staal. All the extra minutes, I think, have caught up with Mr. Del Zotto. Until recently, he'd really stepped up and played huge, but the last two...  I hope he snaps out of it.

Cancer, no. But, a guy who is fighting back from injury who's not have a lot of success could be a downer in the room. Body language was not good. Probably quiet in the room because of his struggles. Bring in 3 guys raring to go and prove something to their new line mates, and yes, the dynamic changes for the positive. My diagnosis would be: non-cancerous, but causing mild depression on contact with others. Prescribed treatment: change of scenery. Voila! Game winner.

Dump Pyatt.  At least Boyler can win you the odd face-off and can skate. Pyatt is a bit stronger on the wall, but that's about where is usefulness ends. Very slow skater, can't score.

Re: Gabi.  He's had back-to-back solid games.  I think his shoulder is definitely an issue, because outside of the one bomb of a shot that Pavalec kicked completely out of the zone last night, it looks to me like his shot just hasn't been the same all year. Very pedestrian wrister, from a guy who used to let it fly.

@KevinDeLury  @Rex_Havok BB's definitely not alone on this team.  We have more net fly-bys per game than any other team in the league.  Watch any given rush and you'll see an uncontested rebound bounce happily to a waiting defender while our guys, both shooter and trailer, skate around the net. One word: Fucking STOP!  Ok, that was two, but one's for emphasis.

While Boyle hasn't hurt us, he's not taken that next step either.  I'll give him props though...he had the hit of the game in NJ, with the total destruction of Volchenkov early on.  It was so beautiful, during the next stoppage, I rewound my DVR to watch it again.

As I mentioned before.  I have to wonder if Callahan's leadership has any traction with these guys.  When the Capt. goes balls-out, the troops should follow suit.  Don't just admire his effort...match it. Gaborik, to me, is the biggest offender.  The guy is a world class talent, but has no confidence in his ability.  You saw clear evidence of it on the 2-1 last night when he passed up the shot to pass to Richards. He needs to start thinking SHOOT first and they'll start going in. If he takes 20 shots and none go in, that means he needs to take another 20.  Like Torts says over and over, you have to keep plugging away. Play your game man. Where's the guy that used to streak down the wing and rifle a wrister from the top of the circle? He's now dumping it off every chance he gets. Why is he setting up down low on the PP.  He should be up cruising between the hash marks ready to fire it off a feed...find open ice and fire the damned puck.  To me, that should be his focus on the PP. Too often I see in in front of the net or along the goal line.  Let someone like Boyle or some other garbage collector-type battle in front.  That's not Gabi's game, nor should it be. He's a sniper, let him snipe.

@coontzbloontz  @slapshot13j Feds and Mitchell were tough though.  Neither could fight.  Feds is more apt to smile you into submission than punch you. But they hit on every shift, were puck hounds, and were just difficult to play against. They gave good grinding minutes every game.

@boogiepicker  @slapshot13j He's not a doctor...but he is being paid millions to play in NY, surrounded by the best doctors on planet Earth.  You think that none of them were able to give him a diagnosis? Laughable.  It's admission by deflection. He and the team know exactly what is wrong with him, and while it could certainly be a number of nagging issues, the fact that it was SO hush hush, and that they were so careful with him certainly leads you to believe, they were thinking he was suffering from symptoms of concussion. Remember, he'd been skating up to and including the afternoon prior to the Icedancer game that he sat out...so I doubt it was groin related.

"...but, wow, a fight here or there could really be used to spark this uninspired team." Absolutely.  Question: Why in the world pick up a "tough guy" that has ties to every other organization in your division? We're the last team to the dance with this guy, you think he's going to pummel guys he's shared a locker room with for years because of a hard hit on a guy he's played about a dozen games with (has he even played that many out of our 17)? I like his skill, and I think be brings a bit of that to the 4th line, but he needs to step-up and punch someone in the mind when they run our goalie, or rough up Gabi and Nash. Lucic should have been challenged after the hit on Nash. Ash was in the lineup. And I believe we were still up 3-0 or 3-1 when it happened.

@jtf1218  @ForEachNYR Sadly, I think he's played his last game in the NHL. His symptoms have lasted far too long. I feel really bad for him.  Such a promising, solid d-man, with good net-front presence and grit. He's missed for sure.

1 year, 8 months ago on Torts Talks Pressure & Toughness

Reply

@ForEachNYR  @KevinDeLury That's the point there.  Total team toughness.  We don't need some knuckle-dragging enforcer running around punching people, as some have suggested. To further that though, an effective PP, will go a long way toward stopping some of the nonsense...and at far decreased risk of personal injury. Just sayin'...

@scrangersfan Neither Scott nor Orr are the answer, as proven by both being sent elsewhere.  Total team toughness is what we're after. When it's guys like Dubi stepping in (he couldn't fight for anything, but he was game).  We need more of that sort of grit.  And is it just me? But... Where in the world is Brendan Sandiego, er Shanahan? Last season we couldn't go a day without a player fine or suspension.  This year... ::crickets::  Hey Brendan: Pach leaves his feet to hit a player with his back to him, and follows through with his forearm to the back of Mac's head, smashing his face into the glass.  What part about that is not, at the least, a fineable offense? ::crickets:: Brendan? ::crickets:: Brendan?
