@TommyD6of11 Short of war (the only reliable, universal route to peace...until the next conflict), the only way the Muslims and Jews can co-exist is for them all to convert to Christianity.

I have thought for sometime now that the Obama-Bush policy was to deconstruct the ME.  For a while Bush worked on the delusion of nation rebuilding with Iraq but that basically failed so Obama flushed it for him.  Chaos is the policy goal.  Others can tell us what the motivations of doing this are. Maybe seeing Iran get a nuke helps this deconstruction along, Obama seems to be on board with this.

@Lybard Hoppe @ProudlyUnaffiliated @Henry Solomon @swaps @august9  I believe any country has the right to try to acquire nukes.  And any country has the right to stop them from doing so.

This is merely an extension of the natural right of any country to conduct warfare.

@TommyD6of11 @J68R @bill5 I hate liberated women, too.  But you are wrong-- Christians and Jews are not slaughtered anything like the muslims slaughter their fellow muslims for being an apostate.  Christians and Jews can buy their way out of conversion or beheading, taxed so to speak, for their religion.  When Jews and Christians are killed it is usually for some specific political/financial reason like a ransom not paid, to pull our chain, youtube propaganda, etc.

@Lybard Hoppe @Henry Solomon @swaps @august9  Correct.  But the real problem was not the Jews seizing lawfully deeded lands from the Palestinians, it was that the Jews did not have the decency to kill them or drive them away forever.

That left an unsolvable mess.

Regardless, I am not so keen to see Iran with nukes.  Nothing good can come from that.

An interesting analysis from a respected, logical westerner but there are problems--

1. Iran is heavily involved with North Korea, who has a bomb.  Maybe they have another source of uranium?  Or maybe they do cheat or a bit of both.

2. They may not mind dying.  Iran is bringing caliphate and chaos to the entire mid-east.  Why?

3. I can agree to UN inspectors and then jack them around all day long -- being that am sympatico with telling the UN to shove off on spec.

4. Russia.

5. The Iranians are sharp and making bomb-grade plutonium is not that hard but the plutonium bomb design is difficult.  They might be doing that as we speak, using the uranium route to the bomb as a distraction.

Who ya gonna trust?  Obama or the Iranians...

@Adam Price  2040 is 25 years from now.  With the Fed doing all it can to maintain the target 2% inflation in the face of all the deflationary forces, I guess the main function of the Fed is to ensure that this pain drags on for another generation.  Great.

@Adam Price I think the 3rd reason is the current  raison d'etre (mission, if you will) of the Fed-- to enable government borrowing and spending to a level not politically possible if all had to paid for by taxing the productive economy directly.

Disagree?  (1) Look at history and (2) watch what happens as things unfold.

BUT, not to leave this on a total downer, there is a way to change the game and focus.  See Gun Owners of America (GOA) and their approach which presumes all the failings of people that we see in our "betters."

Enjoyed this article but what if they held an election in a democratic country between the 2 major parties and they had names such as, Party Red and Party Blue.  And both sides said what they thought would get them elected because if their side got elected then they could party hearty and get babes and money and wine would flow to THEM while the losing side was shut out of the good times.

Would you expect the winning side to follow through with its promises made to get where they are now? Or would you expect to see about what we are seeing the winning party in Greece do now?

@BrianMcM @JasonEmery @clovisdad  As one of those boomers you describe, let me tell you that you have raised a typical strawman/fear-based "point."  Social security is a deeply flawed program financially and needs to be wound down as it is unsustainable and unaffordable.  It can be humanely ended by a pro-active US government default where priority is given to different demands/creditors just as Peter Schiff and others have advocated.

Read this and then get back to us with an answer to the following question--

@clovisdad  I agree with just about everything here.  But I do not think it has to be many years of austerity, theoretically at least. If they let the markets work and pricing to freely occur and be discovered rationally, I can't see how it takes too much longer than about 2 years and probably much less to fix it all.  But they won't do that because whoever does it will be blamed for the "crash" from now until the end of time by the controllers of all stripes who say they know better because, after all, they are the smartest people in the room because they say so.

@Adam Price The primary purpose of any QE is to increase govt spending at the expense of the private sector.  Historically, this was done by raising taxes but that won't fly politically so now we use QE.  They may dress it up as many other things but this is what happens every single time with QE.

Is this little dance over sanctions and counter sanctions and counter counter sanctions even real?  With the west's projection of vacillation and weakness so obvious and entrenched can we really believe that anything serious in the way of sanctions against any country will happen at all?  Is it all a war of words for public consumption?  Sure looks like we are watching a Punch and Judy show.

So?  Maybe it was a ruse delivered for public consumption, not like that has ever happened in the history of the world, now has it?  I repeat, so?

Then why were they dropped?  Details and facts please, not an argument why officialdom may have lied to us.  Geez...why do you waste your own time with something of so little consequence?  Part of a leftist meme on why American should self-hate, are we?

I think Truman was very measured and compassionate.  If it had been me, much worse would have happened, hopefully complete obliteration of Japan and all of its culture, to show the entire world what happens when you attack the US.  It then would have been written formally and openly into US Policy as the primary mission of the Dept of War (which never would have had it name changed) and perhaps the US Constitution to complete the object lesson.

If you want to end/minimize war, then all war should be perceived as one in which the only outcome is complete obliteration.
