@Speedhunters @crispykrem3 @Hoonigan_RB That Saabaru has potential at least since it is a WRX wagon underneath... Makes me miss mine for sure.

@DustinGC8 To replicate that S14 you'd be looking at $10-$12k in the US, including the price of the car. It's not cheap, but it's definitely attainable. And beyond cutting the stock hood, adding coilovers, the wing and front splitter it's pretty-much a normal car with a few wisely chosen modifications.

@Gianluca FairladyZ The price on the Z33's are coming down quickly, so that will help make the chassis more popular. I don't think swapping in an RB would be a good answer. Supercharged VQ's are reaching 450+ WHP on relatively low boost while still CARB-approved (emissions legal). 450hp is plenty of power, and a supercharger is cheaper than a swap. The issue is lowering weight and improving cooling to make it more effective of a chassis. Z33's need coolers for everything.

I wouldn't mind building one myself, good looking cars with plenty of potential.

Dino, you didn't happen to come across these guys did you? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EQFWYVX0YwI

Not sure what day you went but I was pretty happy to see a US team laying down lap times in Japan.

I find it especially refreshing to see a bunch of RX-7's turning laps reliably while using their rotary engines. If this was in the US maybe one of those would have a rotary still, the rest would be easy-mode V8's. Love the coverage of these events. Can't wait to see that third feature of Under's S15. Thanks Dino!

@mazdaspeeder86 You make it sound like they're using simple, old school chip burning tech. Cobb's Accessport isn't exactly a piggy back ECU. It's more of a convenient controller-interface that installs tables and maps onto the ECU. It can then read and display information from the ECU directly. But it's not piggy-backed onto the ECU like some old-school HKS/Apex'i programmer. The Accessport is probably the most widely-used programmer in the US (especially in the GTR scene) and the tuning software that is available with it is as advanced as anything that AEM or Haltech provide.

@Nate Pump gas octane ratings in Europe and the US are measured using two different calculations and testing techniques. Even though the numbers are different the capability of the fuel is the same. Generally speaking 98 ron in Europe is equivalent to 93 octane in the US - or so I've read. There's a wiki page that will let you get down with your nerd-self if you want to read it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octane_rating

I'm pleasantly surprised to read about a JDM tuner using a US-built manifold designed for what US time-attackers consider's top-spec turbo's. That's a great example of taking inspiration from all over the world. Even the fact that they're using a 15-point cage seems to be an update to their philosophy. In the past it was 6-point cages, now it's 15, so despite the fact that it's still not safe, it looks like they're at least changing their minds somewhat.

I don't know if any denizens in Japan read US-related builds, but here's a good read based on what privateers in the US consider a proper cage build: http://www.motoiq.com/MagazineArticles/ID/3771/Project-Professional-Awesome-Time-Attack-Evo-Part-1--Roll-Cage-and-Chassis-in-Detail.aspx -- and it's even on an Evo 8.

I love the cars featured from this shop, everything they build is just as much show as it is go. It's like the old adage: you can show a race car, but you can't race a show car.

Thanks Dino!

Do they run it open-top like that or do they have a hardtop for it? I really like that Amuse front end, and the revised exhaust exit is pretty cool too. I think I agree with you, ITBs+wide body+track days = just fine the way it is.

I honestly don't know what to think about that Evo. I love the originality of what was done to it, but I kept coming back to the thought: Just because you can, doesn't mean you should. Which is probably unfair because it's obviously built as a bit of a surprise factor and a bit more of functionality. It definitely has presence and stands out even amongst the other three cars.

Also, any idea how well the coilpacks on that BMW V8 are holding up with the turbo downpipe sitting right above them? That's a lot of heat hanging around right above the motor.

Very cool feature cars.

You need to spotlight all of those cars. For serial, all of them.

Also, another How-To-Kiwi trait: Contrasting colors. There are a few examples of cars that use complimenting colors, but it seems like the engine bays have at least one contrasting color used to add some pop.

So my question is this: Can you drive the better R35 in England without being tagged by Big Brother's speed cameras?

What stood out to me the most was the completely huge bump in displacement. Most stroker kits are 4.1, some are larger, but this is the biggest I've seen yet. That's quite the increase and is worth some hefty low-end grunt.

Also, dayyuuuuuum them some fine photos...

Finding a clean, low-mileage turbo chassis is a chore, but if you can make this from it, it's totally worth finding. Every time I see one of these I think back to the ultimate street car challenges from Sport Compact Car and how there was a guy that kept building and re-building an MR-2 that would almost always win but break at the end. It's been years since I've read the articles, but that has always put a nugget in my mind about the potential of these cars. Very nicely done.

More time attack coverage the better. It's starting to feel like time attack is kinda bouncing back here in the US after the debacle that was Redline Time Attack in 2011. Though the big-name tuner houses in the US aren't in the mix as much either, there's an increasing amount of grassroots support and with the addition of an East and West GTA series it should become even more popular.

Great post as always Dino, I too look forward to this event as well. Have plans on attending more Battle Evome events later in the year?

@marsh5 I'm in the process of doing the same thing, I was told to just drill a hole through the floor and use a 3/8" grade-8 bolt and some washers to install it. There's a video for the targa car build that shows exactly where you should be drilling.

Good luck.

@Chris @LukeEVOVIII Alternatives to karting: NASA HPDE days, SCCA HPDE days, SCCA auto-cross. SCCA rally-cross, or any number of other track day organizations like Shift Sector, or Global Time Attack, etc. The two largest/most well-known organizations are NASA and SCCA in the US.

You can also look up regions and dates of the various sanctioning bodies and see when and where events are being held, or you can go to your local track's website and see who is hosting what, when and go from there.

Just start with the desire and research it from there.

@Mike Garrett @QuocAnNguyen Time Attack in general has always ran some sort of DOT-approved tire, never slicks. In the US (Global Time Attack especially) classes are largely split up by their tire tread wear ratings. The lower the rating, the stickier the tire, the higher the class.
