I was going to point out all the same shit as everyone else but I decided to look for a silver lining in this sponsored ad-feeling article: 


Unlike most VIP builds, I'm glad at least something was done with the engine and brakes - which surprised me. Also, despite the air bags and the heavy wheels I'm sure it would still be a blast to take to an HPDE should you ever decide to do something besides hard park it. 400+whp, 6 speeds & big-ass brakes = good times I'm sure.

A lot of points made below are a pretty good explanation of the hate on V8 swaps, but one of the more important reasons why there's such a rift is the general car culture in the US. 


In the US there's always been a rather large rift between old and young, import vs. domestic (or fast & furious vs vanishing point if you will). My old man is all about the V8's and it's old hat to me. The guy just doesn't get me and I get bored easily by muscle cars and V8's. 


In being a white guy driving an import there's hardly ever a time I won't get called a ricer when rolling anywhere near a domestic car show. Go to any Cars and Coffee show and you'll hardly ever see lowered Honda's, S13's or anything else that's been highlighted in a F&F movie - not because import fans don't want to go, but because the amount of shit-talking and hate isn't worth it - especially in the South.


There is no domestic equivalent to the term "ricer" - no negative one-word summation of an entire scene. No one looks at someone driving down the road in a muscle car, rat rod or classic and has a single derogatory word to say. I sure as shit didn't get any attitude when I drove my '69 Camaro. When I drove that thing dudes were like "nice car, wanna fuck my wife?"


But, by swapping a V8 into an import a lot of import fans see it as crossing that divide. Somehow, swapping an American V8 means you're turning your back on the scene and not a real enthusiast. A big V8 swap makes you a corner-cutting turncoat that took the easy way out. I think the hate for the V8 is a lashing-out because of the amount of negativity import car owners/tuners have received since the dawn of import tuning in the US. When you get constantly shit-on for no other reason than owning an import it's understandable that will people respond in-kind.


Hope this helps explain at least some of the hate.

Never once did I bring up any import vs. domestic bullshit. That's all you Jake. Out of the three original pony cars I think I'd take a new Mustang - and I say that as an owner of a 69 Camaro and having drag-raced a 67 Coronet for 2 years. Big boat anchors that can't turn and are only designed to melt rubber just don't do it for me. Add in the boring-as-fuck styling and I just don't care. But good on Dodge for at least trying something daring.

Still the most bland, uninspired styling of any pony car ever built - and the retro-reachback of the new versions make the car feel even more soulless since there's no chrome, or external bumpers, or obnoxious vinyl stickers of the classic Challenger. 


At least the newest versions of it's competitors can turn, both the new Z28 and the 2015 Mustang put an emphasis on newer designs and technology and creating a more modern, more capable version of the same-old pony car. They at least have evolved, however slightly.


But Dodge? Nope. They're still rocking the fucking straight-line-only, flying brick.

Here's to hoping they make it out to WTAC. I think they'll have to toss the slicks aside and run the control Yokohama, so the suspension will need to be adapted for that, and unless they hire a driver I think they'd end up in Pro-Am. Would absolutely love to see it happen though - can't be cheap to ship a car from the top of the world to the bottom.

Mitsu is in a very uncomfortable place right now. They have a confused brand identity that no one really understands. Are they sporty? Eco? Are they both? Do they even offer more than 5 cars? Add to that the fact they have lost marketshare year-over-year for almost a decade in the US, and sales volume has been consistently falling too. I've read several reports from automotive press talking about Mitsu leaving the US market altogether. And with the death of the Evo and no replacement announced, and the base model Lancer 3 years overdue for at least a refresh, I find myself inclined to agree. They hold only slightly more marketshare than Suzuki or Isuzu did before they left the US market, so it seems even more prudent knowing that.

Too bad really. I loved my Evo and I still wish I had it.

@arhiva400 Pushrods = ain't care. With that much literage they could make the same amount of power naturally aspirated using direct injection and a DOHC design - you know, technology that's somewhat newer than the 1950's.

What a misleading title. It's another static display post with only one actual performance-oriented car, gratuitous wheel shots on hard-parked cars with stretched tires that hinder any and all acceleration, and the fourth pre-Worthersee post in two weeks.


I see no mass acceleration here, unless you count people in a hurry to unfold their lawn chairs and sit down.


Color me bored and disappointed.

This Bentley looks, sounds and feels much more like a Bruce than a proper English Nigel... I like it.



Pirelli World Challenge is quickly becoming more interesting than the Tudor Sports Car series - and with half the recognition and press. I can't wait to see it stateside next year. I agree, the wide variety of cars is what makes GT3 so fun to watch.

Thank you for the great coverage Larry! 


It's especially poignant since I wasn't able to make it to FDATL this year like I have the past few, so it's nice to have some coverage of the event since the  Dailymotion Drift Stream was complete shit. I missed 95% of the weekend's event and wasted way too many hours hoping to see some drifting only to be massively disappointed.


I'm with @Seeking Perfection, I think this will be the last time I attempt to watch a livestream event from FD. If it was the first time this had happened I'd be more forgiving, but this is the culmination of 3 years of frustration with the piss-poor livestream.


Looking forward to Frederick's and Charles' POV posts - it looked to be a very challenging weekend all around.

Between the Panda 86 with the wicked rear diffuser, the 3 beautiful Vettes from MTI, various Evo's and STi's, as well as a wide-body Audi R8, every one of the cars competing in the Global Time Attack event looked, sounded and performed better than every single car at this show.

Maybe next time instead of wasting the talents of a good photographer on yet another stupid static show, Speedhunters will highlight an event put on by the only national-level time attack organization in the US?
