@Turbo beams AE86 Sorry you misunderstand me. Most of my duress is squarely situated at the "project Subaru" car that's the current "flavor of the week". I'm not a fan of boxers; never have been/never will be, that said; Toyota in their marketing blitz were quick to point out that they had developed a boxer-style engine for one of their past sports cars. That bit of history in itself led to the obvious question: “Why didn't Toyota just develop a new engine in that format if their new car just had to have a boxer?" "Why go to a rival car manufacturer?" The answer is fairly simple: COST. In the end was it worth saving some development costs versus your own company's quality control? Only time will tell with that one. As I understand it, Toyota owns 5% of Yamaha so being vested that much in a particular company is more of a partnership than a joint venture with another manufacture. So using Yamaha to help in engine development is practically the same as doing it in house at Toyota R&D. Toyota needs to STOP these "joint ventures" with other car manufactures and develop something all their own in a manner of speaking. The 86/FR-S is not a slam dunk in my opinion; regardless of how many they sell, or how many people gush about it how fun it is. Losing to a Camry is NOT FUN to me.
Toyota clearly has issues making a sports car with THEIR OWN engine. It should be obvious by now that the accountants are in charge at the corporate board of Toyota motor co; and do not want to absorb the cost of engineering research and testing involved with engine development.
If this is the path that Toyota is going to take in the future regarding any sports car platform, they should just give it a rest and concentrate on manufacturing vanilla flavored-solar powered Mommy-Mobiles.
Incredible trip, awesome photos; well done sir.
Japan is a exciting/interesting/wierd place... Can't wait to go back! :D
Pretty amazing stuff!
Great coverage! I've enjoyed reading about these guys since they were featured in magazines last year. Oh yeah, and I often GREATLY EXCEED the posted speed limit, but always in a SAFE manner.
So GM is releasing another variant of the Holden Monero/Pontiac GTO/Pontiac G8/Chevy Caprice Police Car. How many different ways are they going to spin this formula?
One of the BEST POSTS ever on Speedhunters! Just of bunch of car lovers and their awesome cars; great job capturing this art.
Unbelievable. That is freakin' awesome! Congratulations Suzuki!!
Whoa, didn't see that coming....
A properly done classic car with a modern engine. Beautiful.
The video and interview were both excellent. I have read articles about Miura-san but getting to hear him answer thoughtful questions about his work/passion was really great.
I am however sick-to-frickn'-death of the FR-S/BRZ.
