Great post Adam. Building brands/audiences on someone else's dime is a rare opportunity for content creators. Especially rare as there is no creative exec giving "notes" and 100% of retention of rights. The YouTube money is the least expensive financing you can get given the creative risk. Jump on it if you can get it.

You are absolutely right that LA is way more diverse than most people give it credit for and there is an abundance of "real tech" activity. Just looking at the rounds announced in the last week you have a subscription airline (surf air), an augmented reality tech company (Daqri) and a community building software company (NationBuilder). Sounds pretty real to me!

Viddy's win is a real disconnect. What was the basis for the nomination and win? Was it a small committee, a LAVA org vote or something else? All very odd.

Michael, you are absolutely right that comparing the view of an MMS ad to a click on a display ad is not an apples to apples comparison. In essence it is like comparing a banner to an opt in email ad. A more interesting comparison would have been click through rate to the underlying product page/offer for each of the MMS ads received although there is still room for debate on whether the comparison to display is valid.
It would be interesting to see solutions developed where one of the actions that you could take on a display ad is a button to push the message to you via MMS to allow interaction later. So rather than make it about MMS v display it is how to use the capabilities of the mobile channel to create the best user experience for the user as well as value to the advertiser.
