@jgidley97 It really was amazing to actually hear someone provide insight as to what was happening with the two teams in this game. What a novel concept! After eons of Vitale on ESPN and Packer on Raycom (in the ACC footprint), Bilas made for a nice change. He let the game speak for itself.

International soccer (nation v nation) is about to go through a very rough decade. With Russia + Qatar that aspect of the game will see declines in popularity (relative to how incredibly high global interest has been the last couple decades). The club game is going to make more and more gains. There's a reason ESPN didn't scrap and claw to make sure they held on to the World Cup, they'd probably rather get the Premier League from NBC, better bang for the buck.

"Not even Rupert Murdoch has the budget to send an entire Fox Sports announcing crew to the Europa League to broadcast Tottenham-Besiktas."

Yes but with soccer, networks usually have the option of picking up commentary from the international broadcast feed. Provided in this case by UEFA's official broadcast partner who has an English language commentator on site. Just like NBC only has one lead commentator for two games per Premier League weekend but picks up the Premier League Productions audio for the other 8 games.

Will be interesting to see if college football can hang on to a few spots this year, since the semi-finals beat two wildcard games:

FOX WILDCARD 42.3 million
CBS WILDCARD 28.3 million
ESPN CFP 28.2 million
ESPN CFP 28.1 million
NBC WILDCARD 27.9 million
ESPN WILDCARD 21.6 million

This divisional weekend is shaping up to be a ratings monster, even in a relatively down year for the NFL. But Monday's CFP title game will be huge too.

They won't be canceling Anthony Bourdain's show -- it's a relative hit for CNN and its not produced by a Turner property. They will probably steer more toward limited run travel/culture/food series like Parts Unknown and then the rest of the day covering "BREAKING" "NEWS".

This is cool... but also a little misleading. Tons of people tuned in to NBC and NBCSN last month expecting to see Olympics coverage while soccer matches were on - clearly boosted the 2 hr average viewership. Also, these Olympic watchers subsequently freaked the f out...

I can't believe people that read a sports media site actually think the NFL would go to PPV. Insanity! I mean, look what it's done for boxing! You want to sell an extra 1,000 tickets at the expense of hundreds of millions in broadcast tv ad revenue?

If Roger Goodell even mentioned it to the networks, they would light him on fire. The future isn't PPV, it's doing away with the blackout policy altogether and sweeping the attendance "problem" under the rug.

But they're going to have to gamble again to hope for more viewers. I agree, it might make the league look worse but all MLS execs agree that the footprint has to expand.

1 year, 5 months ago on 5 Ways to Fix MLS on TV

Another issue with the national pull of MLS is that they were kind of forced to expand in to smaller or Canadian markets for the sake of putting butts in seats. While Portland is a great city and a phenomenal soccer town, it's also only the 23rd biggest market in the country. MLS kind of had to scatter themselves after the Florida failures of the 90s. The result is that the teams are largely on the periphery of the continent and seen as very regional. We'll see if this improves with more exposure in the Southeast with Miami, Orlando and perhaps Atlanta. But it could be a long slog for MLS to get some national traction -- though the good thing is that so many clubs are on sound financial footing with their own stadiums and strong local followings.

1 year, 5 months ago on 5 Ways to Fix MLS on TV

Reply

@chrisc74 Unfortunately it's never going to happen. Relegation only takes place across the world because soccer in those countries pre-dates the notion of owners making huge sums of money off their teams. No way you get 21st Century MLS owners to take the financial risk of relegation (on top of the primary financial burden that is being an MLS owner in general).

"I will point out he didn't mention the Cubs, a fanbase so hardcore that they still outsell the White Sox when they're dead last in MLB standings."

But this isn't about ticket sales, it's about fan behavior once they've purchased tickets. The Nats are now 9th in MLB attendance - ahead of the Cubs and the Red Sox. But it is a largely passive crowd. And like the Cubs, Nats games have become a social event in DC.

@joelucia  @LONESTAR21 And what Selig wants to happen is for Angelos to sell MASN to FOX. Otherwise the Nationals are stuck with the Orioles owning their rights along with the now longstanding battle over how much Angelos will have to pay per year (it's overdue an increase).

The Premier League has grown out of a niche league for enthusiasts in the Fox Sports World era to more mainstream, live in the now coverage in the US. This NBC deal is further proof of that. Just going to have to adapt to the fact that fans want to monitor the league in real time, even if that's a Saturday morning. We wouldn't expect to have CBS hide scores, real time updates and highlights for the sake of those who might want to watch games delayed on NFL Network of their DVR.

I think Notre Dame's options will be more clear (like a lot of other things) when the lawsuits regarding Maryland's ACC exit fee are resolved. If North Carolina, Virginia, Georgia Tech, Florida State and more find the exit fee palatable they could blow the ACC to oblivion. Notre Dame could then run back to the reformatted Big East. Could be why the Catholic 7 only want to add 2 at the moment. Notre Dame always has a place at that dinner table.

In between the "soccer boring" cavemen and the futbol nerds fuming about an excitable American calling a match lies Fox's target demo for this experiment... Urban/suburban college educated men between 18-40 who are hardcore US sports fans but becoming more and more interested in European soccer. For lack of a better phrase, let's call them the Bill Simmons demo. As Awful Announcing has mentioned, it's a risk to stray from British commentary but probably one worth taking for Fox.
