Sounds like it'll be a great trip! As exciting as it'll be to stay connected digitally, I hope you guys have a blast in the good old analog sense, too -- don't let the blogging and tweeting distract too much :)
Safe trip, and best wishes to you both!

Hah, love this. Great intro to the team, and it's nice to see the different personalities and senses of humor. Cheers!

@johngarcia I really like @hawaii's suggestions. Adding comment count to summary, and adding a link at the end of the article to comment/see comments (vs. having to scroll back up, then tab over) seems like a super simple way to keep the clean layout and enhance the add-your-voice flow. Love it!

@jkretch Same here -- I've grown accustomed to the tabbed comments as well.
I certainly don't mind the commenting functionality being a click away -- if I want to add my voice or respond to something, that single click doesn't add much friction. To me, then, the benefit of a non-tabbed design is that it would make the comments themselves more prominent; that is, by seeing them in-line with the article, I might feel more like I'm adding to a conversation than simply responding to an article.
I'm cool with the layout as-is, though. Like @jkretch mentioned, this looks super clean!
Cool stuff, John -- thanks for the peek behind the curtain! I hadn't heard of Livefyre before, so that was an interesting read. Sounds like it'll be a great tool here.
