@Melissa808 Speaking of favorites. Going to Le Bistro tonight , one of our all time favorites overall...
@Melissa808 @russkar : it was like Onodera but for $85- not $165- plus, plus. Isn't it sad how some of the finest establishments don't get support and eventually disappear..I believe the Gaan Chef when back to Japan.
We sure miss Gann (sushi) which used to be in the same location. It was fabu.
We were going to go to Il Buco recently but their "no outside wine allowed policy" killed that idea...not even with a corkage charge?
Looks great! Very convenient having Hiroshi across the street from my building...

We tried Simply Ono yesterday. We decided on the Roast Turkey Plate $9-. It was fantastic and the best thing I've eaten in the building so far. Can't wait to return.

Myong, you couldn't be more on point. For some reason average to mediocre NEW Breakfast , Sushi and Chain Restaurants have been getting a load of undeserved buzz.
Then when we finally try these places after all the glowing reviews and guess what ? The Emperor has no clothes...
I've made a point of not reviewing several of the new restaurants because if I don't have anything nice to say then why bother...lol

Nice Blog and a lot of fine choices but none of these places feature #1 Sashimi Grade Ahi, but rather #2 or below.
The only places that use the highest level of fish are Kyung's, Keeaumoku Seafood and Ono's on Kapahulu.
Nice Review, we had a great time..

Nice looking Drink (Guy Tai) but it has nothing to do with a REAL Mai Tai.
There is only Fresh Lime Juice used in the Trader Vic's & Don the Beachcomber recipes from 1940's.
If you want to experience a SCRATCH Mai Tai you can order them at Royal Hawaiian Mai Tai Bar or Halekulani. They're Strong but Damn Good!

Of course most Fugu is Farm-raised in Japan nowadays exclusive of the toxins and can be rather bland.
The last time we had "wild" fugu was at Urasawa in Beverly Hills about 10 yrs ago.
He quit getting it because customs kept seizing it.
His preparations consisted of Sashimi which made your tongue and fingers tingle and was very flavorful unlike the recent Japan experience.
Fried and last but not least Fugu Sperm Sack Risotto which was really good but unusual just the same.
Followed by O-Toro with Gold Flake and Beluga Caviar on top.

Chef Mike is fantastic and doing great things with the menu. We went to MG recently and the food was better than ever.
Sure have and Dennis does have the best "exotic" $5- cup of coffee by far.
I love Beach Bum but not everyone can afford it.
Tango has the best $2.25 coffee by far....

@DianeSeo : it's more than size and price point. The flavors were uneven. Take the Stuffed Meatball for instance. Spiciness past the point of good flavor. Try the Meatball for $5- at Il Lupino which is almost twice as big and tastes great. The Caprese was the same story. Obviously it would be nice to see Prima do well but if they continue to shoot themselves in the foot they won't get a second chance from the finicky Kailua diners.

What else did we have? Almost the whole menu, no kidding. $300- for our group. I'm still in shock considering all my foodie friends that raved about this place. V-Lounge has declined in the last few months also. I don't understand it?
At least Sushi ii is still very dependable for small plates at logical prices.
We were at Prima last night and our group was underwhelmed with most of the dishes other than the Sweet Breads & Squid Cannelloni. Prices were on the high side and portions were on the small side.
Cat: Great Review. Spago is easily the best restaurant in Maui. We normally enjoy the Chef's menu which is several courses and takes 3 hrs to finish.

We found Bernini to be a overall disappointment and we ordered several recommended dishes.
Even some of the pictures show some of the inconsistencies like the pizza's are uneven which shows the lack of quality control coming from the kitchen. $150 for 2 including tip was a complete waste. My wife "who's Italian" didn't like anything.
If your a Wine collector your not going to like their "no corkage allowed" policy which is a deal breaker with several of our foodie friends. I predict an early demise to this ill conceived location and management.

Hopefully you'll review the "Afternoon Tea" soon @ Tango MKT. For 11.95 is maybe the best deal on the Island. We almost did it today but V111 1/2 called for lunch.

@ Melissa: regarding those Pistachio Covered Grapes from Mavro. They are one of my favorite things to make as an Appetizer for the last 20 yrs. The recipe is in Michel Richards cookbook. So easy and So good! If you use Larger Grapes with seeds you cut them in half just before serving and remove the seeds and they look awesome.
@nonstopmari I'm planning a trip back just to check out the Foie Gras xlb. We tried most of the dishes when we went a week ago and of course it was the soft lunch opening so too soon to rate. Ungodly loud though.

@ bettydalycity: Din tai fung should be your first stop in Taipei which is the benchmark for this cuisine. We didn't have that great of an experience at Jin as M&M. Very average at best. But then again it's better than anything else on the Island concerning the dumplings.
