@ivanricov Even if he commands $6M a year long term? I love Staal too but if that's the case you can't possibly resign him at that price. These are some of the difficult decisions a GM has to make. Plus there are lots of good D in line to come up very soon. I wouldn't give him away for nothing if he were traded but its something that has to be kept in mind.

The Flyers are going to beat the Rangers up... over.

The Penguins are going to run over the Rangers... over.

I feel bad for anyone that has to come into our building... let's see. Twice already the Rangers heard how they were not going to be able to handle it. Let's see what happens now.

@tidus_37 @Bring back Langdon Agree with everyone here. Cally was a great player, brought something special, etc. Just don't think his price tag was worth it in the salary cap world. Maybe the trade humbled him and his agent a bit but its not a Ranger concern any longer.

@IhaveawaiteratMSG Why limit it to the Hurricanes? If they decide to trade him this summer, do you know how many teams would line up and offer up a big package to get Staal for a whole year?

@johnAMIRANTESrug Can't say he necessarily strong arms his own FA as he gave Hank, McD, and Giradri pretty much what they wanted. Cally is only one he didn't feel was worth the price. Just my two cents.

@richeypow @TheNYRBlogNo offense, but as much as the team was pushed around this year, even Cally didn't really step up and defend his teammates much.

Question I thought about today. Leadership. Is leadership waiting until a coach is fired before that guy finds out the team stopped listening and asked for a change? Cally C and Girardi A. That means leadership may not have spoken to the coach and just asked for a change. Just some thoughts for discussion.

Let's just be happy that he was signed to a long term deal already. Imagine having to deal with a contract for him after these games.

@NYrangers79 @TheNYRBlogNash did not get hurt consistently until the concussion bug got him. Before that he was fairly durable. Also, they play different games and Nash does not throw his body around.

The sad part is that before this he was loved and revered by almost everyone. Since his supposed demand went public people started to look at him through a microscope, picking apart his weaknesses, showing his shortcomings. It's a sad way to go out if that is truly what is going to happen.

@Kevin DeLury True. I was just going on the articles I read that said they didn't get permission. That was my only point.

So, can't Buffalo be penalized for publicly stating their intentions? They are discussing a player under contract and they did not receive permission to talk with Cally. I'd say NY may have a case.

Hockey was a business ever since free agency. Hockey became a rough business ever since the salary cap. No longer can you just offer a player whataever they want. You now have the tough choices to make. Sorry, but at the prices being thrown around, thank you for your years of service Ryan and enjoy your new team.

@DubiLeetch @JoeyKocurSorry, but not worrying about 7 years from now on a contract is what makes you irrelevant in 7 years. You can't just look at this year and next, you have to worry about 6 and 7 years down the line as a GM. Look at the Flyers and all those 6-7 year deals they've given out.

Cant hate the move. You cant possibly pay the asking price and if you wait too long to explore trade then you get shafted. Leave both options open but final price will determine the end result.

@mintgecko If we trade Richards and he retires before contract is up then NYR gets hit with the cap penalty. Buy out is only option unfortunately.

From what I read it seems they built team USA based on assigned roles and didn't just take the top 25 best players. I think this will work out well if the players all know their roles. The biggest knock against Ryan (minus Burke's hate) is that he is one dimensional where everyone else has other skills. Just what I took from it.

@mando24179If Messier did his time like Roy did in the minors then giving him a chance would make sense. He's only a name at this point. No proof that it would work and he could make it even worse. If he wanted the job bad enough he should have put in his time.

Don't know how you can say minor league lifers. Lindberg and Fast are in their first years in American hockey and were highly rated before coming over and Kristo just got ouf of college. Gernander was a career minor leaguer, these guys are still young.

@Norma Meyer Giving a guy a chance to run a team without any real experience, so close to the Cup, is such a huge risk. He has done nothing to show he is ready for the job. If the Oilers want to take that risk then let them. NY made the right choice in giving it to someone with experience and a Jack Adams award to go with it.

@Bob Blickwede No one thought Gretzky would get traded, twice. (First time for money, I understand). Messier was traded, Eddie G was traded, Espo was traded. Sometimes the greats get traded and sometimes the trades you would never think to make can be the most successful if done wisely.

@gravey94 Look up Mike Keenan's resume before he came to NY. 3 finals trips, 0 Cups. Just shows that it takes the right coach, the right players, and you could have a true contender. Anyone who said NY was definitely going to win before they did forget the previous 54 years of "this is our year".

So, if there is a supposed 24% rollback plus a reduction in the salary cap then everything should cancel out. Also, why would teams agree to the potential cap hits without putting in some kind of a grandfather clause for certain contracts?
