It seems like a false argument to compare 2005 to 2014, but your point that the preseason doesn't portend the regular season is certainly valid. Hopefully the team looks at tonight's performance as a learning opportunity... because it seems like there's still a lot for them to learn!

Know what's embarrassing about this list? There are only 2 safeties listed, and I'm pretty sure there was no safety taken in the draft. After watching the Seahawks completely dismantle the Broncos in the Super Bowl with their safety play, why or why did Grigson and Pagano not seem to pay any heed?

Having watched them both a lot at the collegiate level, I think Kam Jackson has the instinct of Mychal Kendricks, though not his level of "thumper." Still - really existed to see Jackson hook up with the Colts!
Love this series.

@psvirsky Agreed... and forget the whole "run" thing. Seattle showed that you can get by with a so-so offense as long as you have a phenomenal defense. /still crying

I feel worse... not because I feel worse about the team per se, but I feel worse about the team's relative place in the AFC. I expect the Texans to bounce back (maybe back to contender) under the new coaching staff. I expect the Pats - who were already winning ridiculously this year - to improve a lot with most of their starters returning from IR. I actually expect Denver to get a little worse. KC might actually contend, and the Chargers and Bengals should likely contend again. There will likely be a surprise contender - is Hoyer going to be healthy for the start of the season?
Anyway... the Colts offense should definitely improve with Allen, Thomas, and presumably Wayne returning. But I never believed in this year's defense; we're at the same point this year where we were last year. I expect Mathis to finally start showing his age; I think he peaked this year. I love Antoine, but my eyes tell me he his beyond his peak. Toler - meh. Landry - meh. D-Line - meh. The only saving grace is that Grigson once again has a lot of money for free agency, but he absolutely can't miss this year.
Two of the three names to watch went to Cal. Just sayin'

@PiedIs this so that the Colts don't face the Broncos until the AFCCG (if both get that far)? or some other reason?
No need to cut anyone yet, as Walden is on a one-game suspension

You forgot one of the games, Nate. Now I'm not sure exactly where BYE is based, but I'm rooting for them to absolutely trounce New England!

Can't help but think the reason the Texans have surrendered so few yards on defense is because of all the short fields they've afforded their opponents on picks.

"Please note that [T.Y. Hilton] is more beneficial than a fullback". Brilliant. Also, on the comment on Mathis, excellent use of the subjunctive - A+ on grammar.

I continue to be so impressed by readers like you who can see and inventory these packages/formations from what must be a difficult angle. As long as I've watched the game, I still tend to "follow the ball." Thanks so much for this!

Hi hankster - we have hosted fantasy leagues previously... I'll confirm with the team what we're planning this season. We'll have information posted shortly!
1 year, 1 month ago on Luck: Historical Greatness Inside Two Minutes
The other factor here was Arians' willingness to go for it, in stark contrast to Jim Caldwell's approach. Imagine what Caldwell would have done if Luck were 50, 60, 74 yards away with less than 40 seconds to go? Maybe start with a handoff to see if they could generate anything... watch the runner get stuffed behind an inept line, then take a knee to end the half.
While I watched a few Stanford games over the last couple of years, I'm not sure of Hamilton's philosophy... hopefully closer to Arians' than to Caldwell's.
Sounds like you had a great time, and thanks for writing this up, OD!

Not even in the quote itself ("There's nothing we can't do. We can incorporate some pistol concepts") does Hamilton say they WILL (or will not) do anything!

Hard to not watch these highlights and snicker every time the Trojans fail... that said it seems Holmes has a lot to work on... stands way too tall and seems to easily get either undercut or bull-rushed. Hope Gilbert can coach him up!

Nice write-up Ben. I can only hope that DHB's catching quirkiness has more to do with the guy throwing balls to him than his own oddities. I saw DHB at Raiders' training camp a couple of years ago and he is impressive up close... in practice at least his hands are decent!

Computer not cooperating so I can't paste, but Googling his name reveals an article that says he had single level spinal fusion surgery and they discovered more soft tissue damage than expected. So the original estimate of 4-6 months to return to normal (non-football) activity is even longer. I hope he doesn't try to return; I can't imagine he'll ever be up to par.

Too lazy to look it up... hasn't Spencer had some injury issues?
I think Reed's value would be in grooming younger safeties while holding down the position at a decent level (better than Zibby)

Oh NO! I'm sorry - can I delete my post?
Weeeiiirrdd... I was totally thinking about the idea of captains choosing their own teams the other day. I dismissed the idea, though, because I feared there would be hurt feelings or something - at least with the requirement of AFC/NFC, it's out of the players' hands. Yes, I know... hurt feelings for a football player is silly, but you get the drift... what if Manning chose A.J. Green over D. Thomas? Would Thomas pout? maybe that would make it fun...

@ImNickSmith Why? Because the symptom is so obvious?
It does work; so maddening... you wonder why defenders don't study it more.
I thought he wasn't deciding until after the Pro Bowl?
Grigson likes Sowell: http://blogs.colts.com/2013/01/18/2012-colts-draft-class-extends-past-the-big-names-for-grigson/
McAfee better be
I had also wondered about the potential awkwardness of Arians having to step back into a coordinator role after doing such a good job at HC. I have gone through a whole roller coaster of emotions with Arians leaving and Hamilton coming in. I dread the WC offense (I mean who doesn't make fun of it more than I do coughBradycough), but frankly... it can work. And as long as Hamilton is willing to keep some deep passes in the playbook, hopefully we'll see a blend of the schemes that is unstoppable!
