RISP - kemp 0 for 12. Ethier 0 for 9. Everything's getting set up for middle of the lineup, which can't go 0fer.

@DBrim Exactly.  We would have won like 7 of Greinke's starts.  Instead, we'll win 5 or 6 of Lilluano's.  What matters is Greinke will be ready (and actually less worn down than everyone else) at playoff time.

@I Alivandi Yes, the LH relievers in the NL West own him.  I saw somewhere else his individual career records vs. some of those guys and it was horrifying.  0-13 with 9 strikeouts, that kind of thing.

I read Mattingly say Ethier has problems only with certain KINDS of lefties, and maybe he would sit more against those.  He didn't indicate what kind.   Here is some breakdown by pitch type vs. LHP  http://www.baseballprospectus.com/pitchfx/hitter_cards/hitter_card.php?player=444843

Looks like breaking balls out of the strike zone are what kill him.   Ethier was also making noise about the need to improve his pitch recognition, to know how they were going to pitch him, to do his homework.  These are indeed correctable problems.  It indicates he hadn't been trying as hard as he could before, but now is motivated to address the issue.

I did the same exercise.  See here. http://houseofcramps.blogspot.com/2013/02/projected-2013-mlb-standings.html

I basically just eyeballed past stats / other predictions for each player, but this result should be stronger than any one prediction system.  We'll see at the end of the year.  I very strongly agree with PECOTA's take on the Dodgers - 706/597 runs for the Dodgers, good for 95 wins.  This is not the everything goes right scenario.  I plugged in good carl crawford, healthy billingsley, decent cruz, etc.... and got up to 98 wins.

@Mike Petriello  @JackedNate Name 20 third basemen that will outproduce a 290/390 offense and +10 defense. (=2 WAR)

@JackedNate If Cruz is as really as good defensively as he looked last year, then even with 290 OBP he is solidly midrange major league third baseman,

So can we please hear about Dodgers interest in a backup outfielder?  This is the one position of real weakness.  Hairston, Schumaker, Castellanos, Gwynn, VanSlyke,... come on.

He'd be by far the best bat off the bench.  And he's still a good glove at third.  Definite improvement to the team.  I don't know what other options there are that could be better.  This team's biggest problem to me right now, besides all the questions of will people be healthy and productive, is the bench.  It is certain to not be good right now.   Signing an OF that could hit a little would be my top priority, but this is not bad either.

Who thinks Marlins will 'listen' on Stanton trade centered around Puig + $.   If they have any kind of plan at all to ever have fans again, an exciting cuban player ought to go a long way.

@Amy Wong, Ph.D. Candidate  @Mike Petriello OK, Uribe has a big contract and provides more than half his value with the glove, but that is not what I was thinking of!  When signed, the expectation was that he would provide offense.

It would be an amazing boost to the defense to get Bourn and Ryan.  Each pitcher's ERA could be expected to go down by like 0.2.   Gutierrez as 4th OF would make it quite a trade for the Dodgers D.   It would be an unprecedented commitment to defense for a high-profile club at the expense of offense.  Would indicate the front office is really thinking holistically.

Can Bourn really get paid for defense though?  Are there any big contracts for guys that provide more than half their value through their glove?

@HarryDoyle  @VietnamDodger On good days, he actually gets much better with runners on.  On bad days, he gets much worse.  The thing is, he can have bad months, where something just goes out of sync.  In his cy young season, he never had that happen.
