You know what the worst part is? The Magic had some leverage here. Let's say they take a hardline stance and tell Howard they're not trading him. Even if Howard sits out the entire season, the Magic end up on top. Why? They'd be in a nice position to keep Howard. Why? Well, let me ask you something. Where would Howard have signed? Sacramento? Atlanta? Neither Brooklyn or LA would have cap space at this point. So Howard would have to choose between playing in his hometown with Al Horford, or getting more money and playing with whomever the Magic could get with the high pick they'd have.
Yet, they squandered it. They didn't even shed some salary. They could have (and should have) traded Davis and Harrington for Gasol- I doubt the Lakers turn that done.
