We try to do a lot of multi-use toys too. I don't like one dimensional toys (which I suppose is one-dimensional thinking?!) 

We have an old wrapping paper plastic bin that has rice, pasta noodles and dinosaurs that we pull out on rainy  or yucky days.  The kids love it.
