In the PRC (which this article focuses on), the "yao" pronunciation is used when you are reading out digits in a string of numbers, such as a phone number, address, postal code, ID number or a serial number. In Taiwanese mandarin, the "yao" pronunciation is rarely used and if heard in Taiwan, is commonly taken as a sign that the speaker is from the mainland.
