Amazing amalgamation of thinking here. Really summarizes my disappointment in "social media" and "social networking." My favorite phrase: "... another load of fluffy crap." One word I would like to see retired is "engagement." My current view of what ails us is that we have become too enamored of lightweight and low impact communication processes at the expense of more honest and in-depth communication. It's not just about face to face though I think that's a part of it. My sense is that once we let numbers drive our assessment of "engagement" we're more involved with advertising than communication. But then I'm just an old fogie...

Back in 2011 I wrote Let's Stop Talking about "Social Business and Who Cares if Business and Brands are "Social"? I felt then the distinction was just being made by us consultants given that business as it is conducted in the real world has always been "social." You use the tools and techniques to do business that are available. 'Twas ever thus.

I'm assuming this thread will include all kinds of Apple bashing but I have to report that, despite this challenge, I still prefer the Kindle software on my iPhone over my Kindle Fire for actual reading. In fact, I had forgotten all about the inability to "buy" from the Kindle iOS app since I buy so much stuff through my iOS Amazon app as it is.
