OMG, you may be the LEAST "serious basketball fan" in history. You are way below average. You disqualified yourself from even "average" status right up front.
"the peak of his career dovetailed neatly for me with the wheelhouse of irrational sports fandom, kids aged five to twelve"
wtf does "irrational" have to do with it. Bird was one of the most "rational" b-ball players ever. Who cares what a 5 - 12 yr old thinks? Steerike 1!
"my true interest in basketball only blossomed ... Dominique Wilkins ... 1991-92"
Great. I've got nothing bad to say about the Human Highlight Film. I loved watching him & Doc & Tree get beat by the Celts. I saw probably every game Bird & Wilkins played against each other. Some great ones. I remember where I was that night they each scored 50+ pts or whatever it was. Here's the deal: Bird owned Wilkins. Bird's Celts owned Wilkin's Hawks. Heck, McHale owned the Hawks.
So, you ignored b-ball when it was great & loved it when it was entering a recession. Real smart.
"when I was interested in basketball, I was interested in dunks"
More stupidity, but I'll give you a foul tip on that.
"one of my first memories of basketball as something more than a driveway pasttime was playing “One on One: Dr. J. vs. Larry Bird” on my Tandy 1000"
As if I wouldn't have guessed. The video-game generation. Your idea of sports appreciation is a video game.
Steeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeriiiiiiiiiiiiike 3! Yerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr OUT!
btw, in what alternative universe is "Doctor" a "badass nickname"?
Sorry I didn't finish your article but that'll happen when you admit to complete stupidity upfront.
