Great article. Love the insight into what it takes to build a marketplace. Especially when it comes to the frictions in keeping transactions within the platform (i.e. personal relationships or large ticket sizes). Its much more advantageous to be the clearing house vs. a directory, but it doesn't always work in every category.
Thought you might enjoy this article I wrote about a year ago which shows the vertical marketplaces that have been built in Craigslist's wake.

Really enjoying your articles - keep it up! I'd also be curious to learn whether there are any examples of successful entrepreneurs in China who didn't have a Chinese co-founder. Fritz Demopoulos from Qunar is one of the few Americans I can think of who has been very successful (but he did have chinese cofounders).
