Great piece, I agree we may have sacrificed a top fledged farm system with trades, but for most of them I'd do them again in a heart beat. The Tyler Skaggs trade may have cost us a potential ace, but in return we got a definite ace in Haren, who could still be valuable had we not let him go. I'd say that trade was definitely worth it, as at worst we traded an ace for a future ace. As for the Segura trade, we did lose a really good prospect, and now really good hitter, but the circumstances still make it worth it for the Angels. Once again we were getting back a LEGIT ace who definitely helped us and could have still.been helping is. Also, Segura is nice, but without a healthy Aybar and Kendrick, who would leave Segura without any position to play for the Angela, the Angels most pressing need is not hitting, its pitching, which was what we got for Segura. And forget about 3 B for him, because between Jimenez, Cowart, Callaspo, and even Trumbo, there is absolutely no space. So really, the trades do deplete the Angels system, but they needed to be done and we're worth the cost. Harem and Greinke are not simply.going to be traded away for nothing. Where the Angels are lacking is their free agency decisons (Blanton and Vargas instead of Santana and Haren, Hamilton instead of Greinke), and like you said just their draft choices.

"Meh" was my exact reaction. I think reading your stuff has influenced my own thinking. Anyway, I don't understand why DiPoto didn't hang onto Morales for longer, it's not like his trade value is at an all-time high. I'm sure he'll put better stats next year firstly because he'd be longer healed from the injury, and because he'd hit in a lineup with arguable 3 of the best hitters in the game. I'm sure Dipoto would be able to land someone better than Jason Vargas for Morales then. This is just one of those moves where in a few months, I'm sure Seattle would still trade Vargas for Morales, so I'm not sure what the  rush is.

Also, I get the that the Angels lineup is flashy, but the depth actually kind of worries me. After Trout and Pujols, nobody is a sure thing. Hamilton is a beast, but that was at Arlington, who knows if he can duplicate that here (ala early-2011 Pujols). Nobody knows which Trumbo is the real Trumbo. Aybar, Kendrick, and Callaspo have their streaks but are really nothing special. Morales could be one more steady bat in the lineup. But hey, at least Bourjous plays now right?

I am almost certain Morales could have had a good 2012 with the Angels, and we could get a better return for him at the trade deadline. This just seems uncharacteristic of a Dipoto Trade.

Jim Bowden reported that he's hearing Haren gets traded by Friday. Is there really no hope left that the Angels retain Haren? Would exercising his option, even while letting Santana go and Torii go, hurt our chances of retaining Greinke that badly? Haren's an absolute stud, always has been, and he really was only bad last year for the 1st half of the season. And that's been chalked up to his back injury, so when he returns next year injury-free, couldn't he be the rotation rock the Angels desperately need?

Great insight, but I'll say this, with Jerry Dipoto, you never what's going to happen. For all we know, the Angels could come away with David Wright, or maybe even Josh Hamilton. Dude is a true ninja.

What are the Angels' chances of signing him in the offseason? There are some heavy contracts coming off the books, do you think the Angels have it in them to get Greinke?

Been hearing some grumblings on mlbtraderumors that the Angels are interested in getting Greinke. And the best part is Greinke sees the Angels as a "perfect fit," so he might be more than just a two-month rental. Do you think a Segura+Cron+pitcher could get it done? Or Morales gets thrown in there to save the Angels a prospect?
