Minor error: Luis Cruz was called up before Dee hurt his thumb, if my memory serves me correctly Gordon had "cramps" on a leg and even some of the players placed water at his locker poking fun. He had been playing terribly(no glove, no bat, no walks etc. etc.) Cruz informed the Dodgers he was going to Japan but the Dodgers did not let him go by calling him up BEFORE Dee Gordon got injured.
@Mike Petriello are you going to mention why the Dodgers are opening the season against SF? considering what happened in 2011 I'm not sure it is the greatest idea in the world. There are still lots of ignorant cowards in this world that can ruin it for all of us.
@JohnM @el Fair enough, let me ask you this 223 PA in the 8 hole with high OBP is enough to justify him batting higher? IMO it is but unfortunately Don doesn't consider it. I do think AJ should bat 6 or 7 but not higher than that. Not with AGon, Hanley, Kemp, and Dre in the lineup they are the problem right now.
@JohnM @el serracho As DBrim points out that is not a "small and unreliable" sample. 165 AB's is plenty IMO. Without looking at numbers and relying on my poor memory AJ strikes out way more when the pressure of hitting higher in the lineup is in his head. Don't get me wrong I love AJ but it's the 3,4,5, and 6 hitters that have to step it up.
If you look at AJ's numbers when he bats anything other than 8th he "becomes" a different hitter and his SO rate is much higher. I read in the beginning of the year that he was much more comfortable batting 8th. In his defense I believe it's better if he is lower in the lineup (6,7, or 8) so it is more balanced otherwise 7,8,9, and 1 hole are for sure outs. (Cruz is the exception at times) and with Victorino struggling its almost 5 outs, so I think Don Mattingly bats AJ 8th to balance the lineup. It's up to the 3,4,5, and 6 hitters to step up if not start the countdown already to pitchers and catchers reporting at camelback ranch.
Justimpressed is not in my dictionary but it is an old one since lol and omg are not in it either. Just poking fun Mike keep up the good work I enjoy reading your blog.
@EephusBlue @Guitar IMO the ump was calling a good game we can agree to disagree.
@EephusBlue Look my apologies, but I find it insulting when I get replies of "what are you talking about" when I'm clearly explaining my points like if I'm just rambling. Again I apologize and it is not my intent to insult but if you read my explanation counter with a point not a dumb question twice.
@EephusBlue Are you 5? can you read? Did you watch the game carefully and objectively? I doubt it.
@GordonMoody Bumping the umpire and Hanley slamming his bat is unprofessional in my opinion.
@Guitar @EephusBlue Because he stood his ground and ejected Kemp. Mattingly also said he expects to get suspended which explains that he recognizes their un professionalism. Don't beleive me or take my word watch the game gain objectively like I did. The Dodgers acted like cry baby's
@Guitar @DBrim Watch it again man I saw it and it was embarrassing for me as a diehard Dodger fan.
@EephusBlue Whatch the game carefully an ignore Collins and Lyons they had no clue what was going on like Vin always does. The umpire was calling a good game and MEllis of all ppl started it. It's pathetic. Watch closely you will see Umpire gesture several times before he let Kemp know who's boss. I feel proud of him.
@DBrim If you watch the game carefully you will see that MEllis and Blanton and the Dugout barked at the Umpire and were warned to stop their arguing of balls and strikes which I last checked is not arguable. It's the umpire's job to enforce the rules and the Dodgers were showing him up. Kemp bumping into the ump is pathetic pick on someone your own size I sincereley hope he gets suspended too. It's shamefull and unacceptable behavior.
"showboating umpire" more like pathetic unprofessional Dodgers. It was an embarrassment to be a true blue Dodger fan yesterday.
I think the umpire was very consistent especially in the beginning of the game even the piches to Dre where called right, if you look at the video again you can even see Dre and the Umpire exchange pleasantries as I beleive they know each other since they both reside in Arizona and Dre's little brother is a minor league player. The pitcher does not have an only choice of throwing down the middle that is ridiculous. If the players have a good eye and the pitcher cant bite the corners its the pitchers fault.
Kemp overreacted period. you dont touch an umpire and that's it. The Dodgers were barking from the get go if anything the Umpire showed extreme patience.
Hanley needs to cut that "I see you" shit rounding the bases period, regardless of what he thinks it doesnt matter the pitcher and the other teams look at it as showing them up and rightfully so. Why would you want to make the other team try to beat you more if it instigates them by doing the " I see you" to the own players dugout.
Burnett's statement to overreacting was his cursing at him. Hanley should have been ejected as well you dont slam the bat and show up an umpire. It was strike, I agree with Burnet. Sit the fuck down.
If one reviews the tape pitch by pitch like I did the strike zone was consistent.
The Dodgers embarrassed themselves and the fans. simply pathetic IMO.
For all the bashing on the Umpire today I believe there is a lot of context missing. I did not see the game live as it was during working hours but after watching the game from the beginning. I can say the following.
It started with Mark Ellis he got called out on a beautiful pitch that he got fooled on and very un-Mark Ellis like he barked at the umpire. Matt Kemp gets a called strike and swings at the next two to strike out and end the inning.
Joe Blanton glares at the umpire during the McCutchen at-bat on pitches that I believe were called right but an argument can be made that the call could have gone either way. Blanton walks McCutchen on a ball low and outside.
Garret Jones works the count in his favor on again marginal pitches but still IMO perfectly called, after Jones ropes Blanton he proceeds to bark at the umpire again instead of focusing on the next batter.
Angel Campos gestures to the dugout ball was outside during Garret Jones at-bat, even though players aren't suppose to argue balls and strikes.
Andre Ethier at-bat, Umpire again tells the dugout he wants no more out of them after strike two is called and again a good call IMO.
Kemp cheers "Let's Go Dre" maybe umpire misheard him or simply thought that's it. Only the umpire knows.
Hanley ropes AJ "I see you" rounding second, next at-bat strikeout slams the bat in front of umpire and barks while AJ tell him "Sit the fuck down. Sit down" Joe blanton gets roped again for a 3 run shot then barks at the umpire again.
In short very unprofessional attitude by the Dodgers on a "call up" umpire that IMO was doing a good job. I was embarrassed as a Dodger fan yesterday.
@Goooog @DBrim @Mike @kempsbat I wish that Other Guy(Eric Collins) would at least do the play-by-play. I watched 5 pitches go by before he even mentioned what was going on on the field. That's pathetic. Lyons is just comedy don't mind him so much.
@Claudia Trejos @kempsbat @EephusBlue I let official score keepers worry about numbers. sorry. I watch the games and study the players while they're playing the game. if you want numbers look them up it's easy nowadays.
@Bob Meripol he hits well in Colorado the Rockies would benefit from him hitting there for 81 games.
