@AveryYesBettmanNo I think Stepan is a very solid player but i must agree with you. He is not elite and will command 6MM + in a salary cap league and that will help wreck the cap. Too soon to complain though since we have another year to go and this one did not start yet..but your point is made.

At some point irrespective of the math (and I know something about math), you have to stick up for yourself. Do we want a repeat of the game in Vancouver where the whole bench was called out? The regular season produces situations where you have to hit back. And i recall that Ottawa and Washington nearly pounded the rangers into submission with inferior teams a couple of years ago. Now is Glass the answer? maybe not but someone has to be. So all your analysis is good but the Rangers still needed some physical presence. Lastly the Rangers received a 3rd round pick i think for Dorsett. a much needed pick given all the picks Sather has traded. So that counts for something.

@Josh-CK @IhateGaborik @Gorangers0525 @BobDunne @betweentheworlds How can we give up another 2nd when we will have no first again , lost one this year and lost 1st and 2nd last year..Enough with the draft picks..
1 month, 3 weeks ago on Conversation @ http://nyrangersblog.com/
@Gorangers0525 Would be just like Sather to get rid of exactly what we dont have and that is a really tough Dman..so there goes Mcilrath..
Not in favor of trading Hagelin.. He was very involved and created some big mismatches with his speed.
1 month, 4 weeks ago on Conversation @ http://nyrangersblog.com/
@GregB1919 @IhateGaborik @fs2020 Have to agree with you. He is not elite and if the rangers feel that they can replace him then he can bring back a decent player in a deal. Perhaps a package deal. Cannot Trade Hagelin though. He sure showed up in the playoffs ...
@ivanricov I dont believe he is the second best d man and he has trouble with break out. Hard to trade him since he is a top 4 d man but he will want big money and does not do the things McD does or an offensive dman does to command the big bucks. Cannot pay him anything over 5MM per year and that is high for 14 points per year. I do think he can bring back a good forward in return.
Signing depth at defense signals that there is little coming up through the pipeline just like we

Carter would be fine pick up. You mention making room for kids but all those kids (Fast, bourque etc.) do not possess the size toughness that a fourth line warrants. Cannot have the whole team be smallish.
Well you got that right.. a shutout in game 6

That was not really any clarification. He lumped Miller in with 95% of other young players. Something triggered it and AV is not telling and that is his right.

Must admit i was wrong about Pouliot. His points per game the last 50 games has been very good. I
think he could stand to have better puck control but all in all he is scoring and this team needs it. Hope he does not disappear against Philly.
@Carbomb Time @Josh-CKThis is true. Chicago can stick up for themselves. Many of us have been calling for toughness for the Rangers and i still do. What is not being said is that the Rangers don't need 3 and 4 tough guys like the Bruins..just someone (1) bigger player that will stick up for the other guys. Backas and Bickel do it for their teams..Once again Staal takes a late hit from Neil. That guy has been running the Rangers for 2 + seasons with very little backlash. Staal did not after him but that is not the same as have a deterrent. You just wont win consistently with all smaller players.
4 months, 3 weeks ago on Conversation @ http://nyrangersblog.com/
It is great to have defensive depth. But i don't see it as replacing a top 2 dman with another top 2. A bit of a stretch there.. BTW. Another night (Colorado) where team plays pretty well and tough guys from other teams taking liberties..and they all seem to be taking some shots at the Ranger's Dmen
5 months ago on Conversation @ http://nyrangersblog.com/
@Chris M It does no use to rant, although i will too. This is MSG and its all about spin. Almost as bad as trying to get the Mets to spend money or the Jets to get a free agent. In this case though the majority of fans on this blog are correct . Need to be more aggressive especially when the score is on your side.
@gravey94 Understand your point and having Graves and Lucic types would be a deterrent and make a huge difference. But the overall point is that the Rangers do not scare anyone.. Even with Lucic the Bruins still have Chara and Thornton while Marchand goes around sticking everyone. This has been going on for too long now that there is no one to stick up for the all stars or smaller players on the Rangers.
@JoeyKocur You are sooo correct. This team needs to start fighting back and soon
@Purinton You are correct, but there are always the do-gooders who scream about retaliation etc. The Rangers took enough crap from Ottawa, Washington and Boston over the last few years in the playoffs and it has worn them down. Sather needs to occasionally focus on dishing it out a bit with guys a little bigger than Dorsett and Carcillo.
@mlsranger Look even Bobby Orr has said on more than one occasion that you need to have a tough guy or 2 to make sure things do not get out of hand. Many Ranger fans just want the deterrent out there. Not necessarily to start things but to end them. What good does it do the Rangers to have Burrows suspended? In fact in could hurt them if Canucks had to play one of the Rangers rivals. it is Ok and necessary to have suspensions and the league needs to worry about safety..but if the league is going to go full in and play the euro style they may have to develop many new millions of fans. Bottom line is that a little old time hockey with 40 seconds to play was completely called for then.. and guys like Dave Maloney would have been praising it had it happened.
Why is the author baffled? When have the Rangers really dropped the gloves all year? It was a major event when Nash dropped them two weeks ago. This team has played well but soft for most of the year. You Cannot Cannot have your all star dman take a hit like that with no retaliation. The game was over. If not then, when to retaliate? Next year? This is all on Sather and AV. Sather does not get any size and I'm sure that AV would not use that size. I know that the Rangers are now effectively rolling 4 lines but there will be no hope with injuries to key people and the Flyers, Canucks and lately other teams have been targeting MCD. Look at the slash at the end of the flyers game. You can bet that if Giroux or Crosby or Bergeron took that hit there would be retribution. Girardi elbowed burrow to the back of the neck and that was that as the refs moved in. But if you really wanted to retaliate it only takes 3 seconds and the refs would have no chance to get in there.
@scrangersfan @JMK8363 To add to what i just wrote. I do like that Dave M understands that players have to play it tough though..Others shy away from that talk.
5 months, 1 week ago on Conversation @ http://nyrangersblog.com/
@scrangersfan @JMK8363 Respect your opinion but As much as I like Dave, he does not appear as if he prepares or communicates that well. Problem with Joe is that he is vanilla. At least we knew where we stood with the Big Whistle..
I am starting to think that if the trading partner is really in the conference then Ottawa makes sense. Neal also makes sense, but as you point out it has to be larger than just Neal.
6 months, 1 week ago on Boomer Esiason Hints At Potentially Imminent Trade ; Let's Speculate
As long as Kreider is not included in any trade. That would be out of left field, i know and i would finally be done with them. Spezza does not have grit and St Louis does not fit that bill exactly but i dont see why ranger fans would not like that deal. Paciorettty has size but not really grit. Hartnell does have grit but his production has been way off and what makes him a topline player? Jagr, Ruttu and Michalek would be big disappointments for ranger fans and Simmonds makes no sense for Flyers. And please...no Detroit players. the 1 for 1 part makes it tough to figure. So lets go with St. Louis or Paciortty for now.
What would Staal be worth in a trade or does his injury history make him nearly "untradeable". I think a guy like Callahan needs to stay though. He makes a difference on the ice, is versatile and plays a full game, end to end.
7 months, 2 weeks ago on What Would A Trading Deadline With The Rangers As Sellers Look Like?
@PenaltySh0t Prust is a much tougher fighter than Dorsett.
Despite Dorsett's willingness this team needs to get a bit tougher. Been Saying that for 6 months... Sather has to do something here.
9 months, 1 week ago on Dorsett Teaches Teammates How To Stick Up for One Another
@McIlrath That would change things a bit for the better. Watch how more effect the first three lines are. the 4th liners dont play that much anyway so why not at least let them have a role. Pyatt and Pouliot are not 4th line players. Pyatt is likely a 3rd line checker and we dont know what Pouliot is.
9 months, 2 weeks ago on Mashinter Assigned to Hartford
@NYR44 So the Rangers will just let Boston push them around a bit. What is it with these moves? 20 Games in and the fans get it but management does not. Mashinter should get a chance. Pouliot has had 1/4 of a season and has done nothing. and now we know why Blue Jackets traded Brassard. Our fourth line should be set up to change flow, provide energy, etc and yet we have basically 3rd liners that cannot score comprising the 4th line.
Also teams are starting to target Kreider. They know he is being very effective and they will start to slow him down or take him off the ice. What is it going to take to protect the guys? More Concussions?
I think you are correct. Having said that i still rather see Ike in the system one more time as opposed to Duda. I understand that watching him on opening day go 0-3 and 2K's will be miserable..but get him a tutor/mentor or whatever is required to get his head straight. I can see him blasting 30 for an AL team next year (albeit with 160 K's).
9 months, 2 weeks ago on The Blame Game, Starring: Ike Davis
Sure is a collective sigh of relief. Was thinking that somehow the Flyers were going to figure out a way to get Bickel or Mashinter. Still need some size and toughness on the home club as Their AHL team is plenty tough already
11 months ago on Powe, Bickel & Mashinter Clear Waivers
@jslnyr1102 lets hope so... Sather has not done well with free agency nor has he drafted spectacularly... He has made some decent trades that enabled him to recover from his other bad moves. I do hope MciLrath produces and gets the chance.
1 year, 1 month ago on Stepan Signing Will Likely Leave Deserving Players Off Roster
@AG_Blue @hankthetank30 Respect your opinion but i dont think he is great along the boards. Hagelin does as much on the boards and then does something with the puck... He does a days work i guess
@josh930 @IcyCup @jasonshyer agree that he should be and do more, but that does not mean you get rid of him unless you get something decent back. The problem is that we dont get power forwards on this team too often. There are several other players on this team who do less..and MDZ is not one of them.
@RangersVW14 agree. lets see what this guy can really do.. He needs to stay and send down powe and pyatt
@Rangers3024 That seems to be he pattern. The coach just did not trust the tough players with any significant minutes so we keep losing the tougher players to free agency or trades. Now we may not need an "enforcer" these days but we do need some size/toughness combination.
1 year, 1 month ago on Asham: Rangers Were Fed Up With Torts
@johnnyb3910 @KevinDeLury @cb1 I agree. We need a slightly large Asham as Dorsett is a different kind of player
@EHBIGAPPLE @Betweentheworlds i think incorrect, HR types are not in the business of downsizing themselves in the corporate world. They are responsible for downsizing everyone else.
Not enough size drafted at the forward position as usual..
1 year, 2 months ago on Draft Summary Part One: Rangers Go All-Out On Forwards In Third Round
@Richard Falconer Agree.. enough already. Many teams have dmen on their team with less than three years in the minors.. Either play him or admit another draft mistake.
1 year, 2 months ago on Why Dylan McIlrath's Time is Now
MDZ deserves better than what is written about him. He gets no protection gets hit often and still keeps going. I would say that if he played in Boston he would flourish. Lets give this guy a break especially since we have 2 star dmen down in Sauer and Staal.
1 year, 2 months ago on Could Del Zotto Be Traded This Weekend?
@KevinDeLury @Josh6 Strange that they say separated when i guess they mean dislocating. I did this 13 times over 20 years until surgery..no idea how they played with it. THe fact that they did it so many times in one year suggests that unfortunately they should not have been playing
1 year, 2 months ago on Nash Had Concussion; Callahan, Hagelin Multiple Seperated Shoulders
@Skunkman yes you do
Why must the Rangers overpay for everything. Really, the new head coach had to get the rumored 5 years? and Richards had to get a contract that extends until his social security kicks in? These guys would not come for a little less? This is why ticket prices never move downward. Having said that, Messier should be in the front office and take Sather's spot as soon as feasible.
1 year, 2 months ago on So What Happens to Messier?
@JustinRP37 Maybe they wont win next year but we fired a solid coach in the early nineties and hired Keenan and won. I know we had some great players then..but just saying that there is precedent in losing the coach and then winning the next year. Also Sather will have his hands full in buying out and then replacing Richards...
1 year, 3 months ago on Players Are Reason For Torts Firing; Richards Healthy Scratch An Organizational Decision
@Hotfreak @mdspwt I agree with you. WIth a better offensive system Hagelin will do better. For a small guy he does come away with the puck more often than most. I am not a big Zuc fan and forget about Powe. Richards will be an interesting story. And the crap that the Rangers endure from Lucic and Orpik and Neil cannot happen. I still think that The coach held back the tougher players in the playoffs and that hurt them, especially last year when Neil ran wild. And What good are tough players if they dont play? Neil plays, all the Boston tough guys play and our guys sit or get traded or let go.. I hope that Sather is thinking in this direction. I think JT was a solid coach but a change was needed.
1 year, 3 months ago on Who Are The Initial Candidates To Replace John Tortorella?
@nick13 True, but if they dont win then you need to look at decisions that were made. Been looking at this now for a very long time and it is rare that the rangers take the physical play or at least the overall flow of the game to the other team. They did this in the early nineties (before they won the cup) and and for long periods of time did this last year.(not in the playoffs so much though) .but it is few and far between and you can have only so many soft players.
1 year, 3 months ago on Staal Doesn't Practice; Clowe Skates; Kreider, Newbury to Travel to DC?
@McPhee37 @nick13 Sorry, Disagree about the board work. Yes he does not make "mistakes" but he does not do much if he comes up with the puck. For a player his size he needs to do more. He comes away with a lot fewer pucks than the smaller players like callahan and hagelin for instance. At some point you also need to put some points on the board. He also plays soft, but he is not alone in that regard. I think he plays because other players may be viewed as defensive liabilities and are not worth their potential point scoring ability.
@nick13 agree. Every team needs a few muckers but they must hit consistently or kill penalties or fight and throw in maybe a few points. He seems to just glide around and does not overly exert himself to come up with pucks in the corners or if he does he does not make too many + things happen with it. If you are going to muck then take notice of guys like Callahan and even Hagelin, who are way beyond muckers but do dirty work and come up with pucks in addition to having overall good skills.
