I understand keeping him and the need for solid dmen..But to be the highest paid d man ? Come on.. To say that he is offensively challenged is an understatement. He is also not a defensive d man like a Daneyko was..he does not play that tough and for me he is the 4th dman on this team. So in a non-cap world i get it and i dont begrudge him a cent..and i am not saying that he is not a good player, but in a cap world it could really put a cramp in the team going forward..This is happening mostly because Mcilrath has not developed quickly enough.

Wow..one Ranger. This season anyway and despite the lower ice time..Klein has played very well. MCD and Stepan had lengthy injuries so their absence is understood. Tough when there are so many teams represented..

@Mike Burns1 Rangers GM called Domi a clown act and gave him away to a team that used him for a decade. He was entertaining for sure and stood up to everyone in a day when the rangers needed it. (remember Vukota and Baumgartner act with Isles before domi and kocur got to Rangers? If the Rangers had a Domi in the early 70's they would have won a cup or 2. Sather is a dilemma. I think he understands the toughness part (Boogie man, Prust, Rupp, Scott, Brashear, Orr)..but then he cannot keep them for long or something else happens to them and he gets desperate for toughness and gets a Carcillo for a 7th round pick etc. He will probably let Glass go too.

@MikeBlue I agree. I hope that Fast turns out to be a good player (Erixon would do as comparison).. but until then there are one hundred players i would rather see (and no i dont have time to name them)..but i will start with most of the Penguins, Black Hawks teams...So i am not bashing Fast but to say that he does not make a huge difference because he has an anchor on his line..is a bit much. If he were that good or ready perhaps he would have been moved to the 3rd line.
@SmellyKisio @MikeBlue he is not alone in botching fast breaks..i notice a center or 2 on the Rangers dumping the puck in on 3 on 2's. consistently. I also notice several dmen that fall all over themselves when they get a chance for a slaphot..so I will say that so far Glass is doing his job.. Not every team is going to land a Lucic...although it is about time that the Rangers do. I have seen enough rangers teams tank when they were pushed around so i will live with a fourth liner that sticks up for his teammates.
Happy to see the rangers win again but the hate that is generated at Glass by so many is getting tiresome. Fast has not done that much (with or without Glass). He is just doing ok and while he may be a good 2 way player i don't see a huge offensive upside just yet.. Lastly, and this has nothing to do with the article, Staal had a decent couple of games and i hope he becomes great, however, the lovefest between he and the Ranger's announcers has gone overboard. Joe and Sam must be angling to be his agent or are working on a trade for him...They even credit him with blocked shots that are Kreider's or other forwards. I listen to the out of town broadcasts occasionally and they hardly mention Staal. Now most of the small towners are homers but still .. the praise is excessive.
Jets need a QB but as usual the Raiders will be drafting ahead of them (and the Bucs) and will grab Marcus.

1) The king really had a tough night against the lightening. The rangers hustled and looked like the better team for quite a while, but he stopped very little and then the team sagged. He needs to be better and he will be. 2) when is the team actually going to have their top 6 d on the ice at the same time? 3) and when is Staal going to hit the net? and he did look lost out there but you would never know it listening to the Rangers announcers. (who for the very most part are not homers, they are not even close to what i hear on NHL network from the smaller market announcers, however Sam and Joe do overpraise Staal).

@ATCRyan @J_CKfor30 Totally agree. All this hating on Glass..and he is a fourth liner who protects other players. Seems to me that Staal is struggling and when he has an offensive chance he flubs it ... .. Finally, watching the game against TB is it obvious that this team does not like to hit.

Ok great. Now how about a real goal scorer as a prospect.
4 months, 2 weeks ago on Conversation @ http://nyrangersblog.com/
@genetics73 generally i agree with you. Fans though have really piled on some guys like Rod Seiling in the 70's. I have no issue though with fans giving it to the organization. Its not like the team has won multiple cups or have been annual contenders. My guess is that the fans fans won't boo this player unless his well below expectations type of play goes on for quite a while. Lets say after about 15-20 home games and a losing record.

@AveryYesBettmanNo I think Stepan is a very solid player but i must agree with you. He is not elite and will command 6MM + in a salary cap league and that will help wreck the cap. Too soon to complain though since we have another year to go and this one did not start yet..but your point is made.
5 months, 2 weeks ago on Conversation @ http://nyrangersblog.com/
At some point irrespective of the math (and I know something about math), you have to stick up for yourself. Do we want a repeat of the game in Vancouver where the whole bench was called out? The regular season produces situations where you have to hit back. And i recall that Ottawa and Washington nearly pounded the rangers into submission with inferior teams a couple of years ago. Now is Glass the answer? maybe not but someone has to be. So all your analysis is good but the Rangers still needed some physical presence. Lastly the Rangers received a 3rd round pick i think for Dorsett. a much needed pick given all the picks Sather has traded. So that counts for something.

@Josh-CK @IhateGaborik @Gorangers0525 @BobDunne @betweentheworlds How can we give up another 2nd when we will have no first again , lost one this year and lost 1st and 2nd last year..Enough with the draft picks..
6 months, 3 weeks ago on Conversation @ http://nyrangersblog.com/
@Gorangers0525 Would be just like Sather to get rid of exactly what we dont have and that is a really tough Dman..so there goes Mcilrath..
Not in favor of trading Hagelin.. He was very involved and created some big mismatches with his speed.
@GregB1919 @IhateGaborik @fs2020 Have to agree with you. He is not elite and if the rangers feel that they can replace him then he can bring back a decent player in a deal. Perhaps a package deal. Cannot Trade Hagelin though. He sure showed up in the playoffs ...
@ivanricov I dont believe he is the second best d man and he has trouble with break out. Hard to trade him since he is a top 4 d man but he will want big money and does not do the things McD does or an offensive dman does to command the big bucks. Cannot pay him anything over 5MM per year and that is high for 14 points per year. I do think he can bring back a good forward in return.
Signing depth at defense signals that there is little coming up through the pipeline just like we
Carter would be fine pick up. You mention making room for kids but all those kids (Fast, bourque etc.) do not possess the size toughness that a fourth line warrants. Cannot have the whole team be smallish.

That was not really any clarification. He lumped Miller in with 95% of other young players. Something triggered it and AV is not telling and that is his right.

Must admit i was wrong about Pouliot. His points per game the last 50 games has been very good. I
think he could stand to have better puck control but all in all he is scoring and this team needs it. Hope he does not disappear against Philly.

@Carbomb Time @Josh-CKThis is true. Chicago can stick up for themselves. Many of us have been calling for toughness for the Rangers and i still do. What is not being said is that the Rangers don't need 3 and 4 tough guys like the Bruins..just someone (1) bigger player that will stick up for the other guys. Backas and Bickel do it for their teams..Once again Staal takes a late hit from Neil. That guy has been running the Rangers for 2 + seasons with very little backlash. Staal did not after him but that is not the same as have a deterrent. You just wont win consistently with all smaller players.
9 months, 3 weeks ago on Conversation @ http://nyrangersblog.com/
It is great to have defensive depth. But i don't see it as replacing a top 2 dman with another top 2. A bit of a stretch there.. BTW. Another night (Colorado) where team plays pretty well and tough guys from other teams taking liberties..and they all seem to be taking some shots at the Ranger's Dmen
@Chris M It does no use to rant, although i will too. This is MSG and its all about spin. Almost as bad as trying to get the Mets to spend money or the Jets to get a free agent. In this case though the majority of fans on this blog are correct . Need to be more aggressive especially when the score is on your side.
@gravey94 Understand your point and having Graves and Lucic types would be a deterrent and make a huge difference. But the overall point is that the Rangers do not scare anyone.. Even with Lucic the Bruins still have Chara and Thornton while Marchand goes around sticking everyone. This has been going on for too long now that there is no one to stick up for the all stars or smaller players on the Rangers.
@JoeyKocur You are sooo correct. This team needs to start fighting back and soon
@Purinton You are correct, but there are always the do-gooders who scream about retaliation etc. The Rangers took enough crap from Ottawa, Washington and Boston over the last few years in the playoffs and it has worn them down. Sather needs to occasionally focus on dishing it out a bit with guys a little bigger than Dorsett and Carcillo.
@mlsranger Look even Bobby Orr has said on more than one occasion that you need to have a tough guy or 2 to make sure things do not get out of hand. Many Ranger fans just want the deterrent out there. Not necessarily to start things but to end them. What good does it do the Rangers to have Burrows suspended? In fact in could hurt them if Canucks had to play one of the Rangers rivals. it is Ok and necessary to have suspensions and the league needs to worry about safety..but if the league is going to go full in and play the euro style they may have to develop many new millions of fans. Bottom line is that a little old time hockey with 40 seconds to play was completely called for then.. and guys like Dave Maloney would have been praising it had it happened.
Why is the author baffled? When have the Rangers really dropped the gloves all year? It was a major event when Nash dropped them two weeks ago. This team has played well but soft for most of the year. You Cannot Cannot have your all star dman take a hit like that with no retaliation. The game was over. If not then, when to retaliate? Next year? This is all on Sather and AV. Sather does not get any size and I'm sure that AV would not use that size. I know that the Rangers are now effectively rolling 4 lines but there will be no hope with injuries to key people and the Flyers, Canucks and lately other teams have been targeting MCD. Look at the slash at the end of the flyers game. You can bet that if Giroux or Crosby or Bergeron took that hit there would be retribution. Girardi elbowed burrow to the back of the neck and that was that as the refs moved in. But if you really wanted to retaliate it only takes 3 seconds and the refs would have no chance to get in there.
@scrangersfan @JMK8363 To add to what i just wrote. I do like that Dave M understands that players have to play it tough though..Others shy away from that talk.
10 months, 1 week ago on Conversation @ http://nyrangersblog.com/
@scrangersfan @JMK8363 Respect your opinion but As much as I like Dave, he does not appear as if he prepares or communicates that well. Problem with Joe is that he is vanilla. At least we knew where we stood with the Big Whistle..
I am starting to think that if the trading partner is really in the conference then Ottawa makes sense. Neal also makes sense, but as you point out it has to be larger than just Neal.
11 months ago on Boomer Esiason Hints At Potentially Imminent Trade ; Let's Speculate
As long as Kreider is not included in any trade. That would be out of left field, i know and i would finally be done with them. Spezza does not have grit and St Louis does not fit that bill exactly but i dont see why ranger fans would not like that deal. Paciorettty has size but not really grit. Hartnell does have grit but his production has been way off and what makes him a topline player? Jagr, Ruttu and Michalek would be big disappointments for ranger fans and Simmonds makes no sense for Flyers. And please...no Detroit players. the 1 for 1 part makes it tough to figure. So lets go with St. Louis or Paciortty for now.
What would Staal be worth in a trade or does his injury history make him nearly "untradeable". I think a guy like Callahan needs to stay though. He makes a difference on the ice, is versatile and plays a full game, end to end.
1 year ago on What Would A Trading Deadline With The Rangers As Sellers Look Like?
@PenaltySh0t Prust is a much tougher fighter than Dorsett.
Despite Dorsett's willingness this team needs to get a bit tougher. Been Saying that for 6 months... Sather has to do something here.
1 year, 2 months ago on Dorsett Teaches Teammates How To Stick Up for One Another
@McIlrath That would change things a bit for the better. Watch how more effect the first three lines are. the 4th liners dont play that much anyway so why not at least let them have a role. Pyatt and Pouliot are not 4th line players. Pyatt is likely a 3rd line checker and we dont know what Pouliot is.
1 year, 2 months ago on Mashinter Assigned to Hartford
@NYR44 So the Rangers will just let Boston push them around a bit. What is it with these moves? 20 Games in and the fans get it but management does not. Mashinter should get a chance. Pouliot has had 1/4 of a season and has done nothing. and now we know why Blue Jackets traded Brassard. Our fourth line should be set up to change flow, provide energy, etc and yet we have basically 3rd liners that cannot score comprising the 4th line.
Also teams are starting to target Kreider. They know he is being very effective and they will start to slow him down or take him off the ice. What is it going to take to protect the guys? More Concussions?
I think you are correct. Having said that i still rather see Ike in the system one more time as opposed to Duda. I understand that watching him on opening day go 0-3 and 2K's will be miserable..but get him a tutor/mentor or whatever is required to get his head straight. I can see him blasting 30 for an AL team next year (albeit with 160 K's).
1 year, 2 months ago on The Blame Game, Starring: Ike Davis
Sure is a collective sigh of relief. Was thinking that somehow the Flyers were going to figure out a way to get Bickel or Mashinter. Still need some size and toughness on the home club as Their AHL team is plenty tough already
1 year, 3 months ago on Powe, Bickel & Mashinter Clear Waivers
@jslnyr1102 lets hope so... Sather has not done well with free agency nor has he drafted spectacularly... He has made some decent trades that enabled him to recover from his other bad moves. I do hope MciLrath produces and gets the chance.
1 year, 5 months ago on Stepan Signing Will Likely Leave Deserving Players Off Roster
@AG_Blue @hankthetank30 Respect your opinion but i dont think he is great along the boards. Hagelin does as much on the boards and then does something with the puck... He does a days work i guess
@josh930 @IcyCup @jasonshyer agree that he should be and do more, but that does not mean you get rid of him unless you get something decent back. The problem is that we dont get power forwards on this team too often. There are several other players on this team who do less..and MDZ is not one of them.
@RangersVW14 agree. lets see what this guy can really do.. He needs to stay and send down powe and pyatt
@Rangers3024 That seems to be he pattern. The coach just did not trust the tough players with any significant minutes so we keep losing the tougher players to free agency or trades. Now we may not need an "enforcer" these days but we do need some size/toughness combination.
1 year, 6 months ago on Asham: Rangers Were Fed Up With Torts
@johnnyb3910 @KevinDeLury @cb1 I agree. We need a slightly large Asham as Dorsett is a different kind of player
@EHBIGAPPLE @Betweentheworlds i think incorrect, HR types are not in the business of downsizing themselves in the corporate world. They are responsible for downsizing everyone else.
