I see so many engaging with and even return fire to trolls. Even sometimes taking a stance as to calling out folks online which is like stepping into a big pile of poop! Don't feed the negativity or you will get a Southern lesson on the rapid growth of kudzu!
A small business does not have time to manage all social networks themselves. In fact, they probably don’t have time to manage even one. Studies show it takes a midsize company about 32 hours a month to capably handle a single social media platform.
So decide what you want, don't open any social account simply because you hear it’s now a must-have for a small business, thats ridiculous, there have to be actual gains. What I have found is that most small businesses don’t know or are vague about what they want.
Before any SMB establishes any new social media presence for their business, they should make a list of specific goals. Maybe it is to drive sales and create brand awareness or business intelligence and research and understanding new markets.
As mentioned given almost an entire workweek to manage a social platform is a sacrifice for most small businesses, choose one or two channels and don’t jump on every shiny new thing, maintain your focus. Measure and cut quick or you may not be a small business!

Awesome post and spot on as for the "you can become a pundit (go ahead and substitute thought leader or expert if you prefer) prior to actually accomplishing anything." We see them, tweet with them and hear them all the time, hell they remind me daily that they are all that!
