The lower part of the lace is definitely crochet. That HAS to be done by hand. Knitting can be done by machine, but I doubt Jean Paul Gaultier would use machine knitted fabric in his designs.

Our local senior/ community center gets donations of yarn for our crochet group who makes charity projects. I'm glad to know you will be donating some of it!   Have fun with it!
