It's a humbling realization that you can't buy yourself into being someone interesting. Even if we are dazzled by someone’s new car, gadget, or shoes, our subconscious isn’t fooled. Deep down we know that material possessions don’t define a person.
What defines us is what we do with our time, both through grand accomplishments and our mundane daily habits. Friends who care about you will usually talk about the places you've been to, your accomplishments in life/school/work, your relationships, your future goals, your thoughts and ideals, etc. Rarely will someone ask to have an hour-long conversation about the new watch or shoe that you bought.
