I can see why this might rub some writers the wrong way, but it seems like a legitimate attempt to offer a platform to writers wanting to get their name out there. There may be other / better options as listed above, but each sight can find ways to differentiate themselves and shouldn't be criticized for the effort. Whether or not it will work isn't an indictment on the effort and can be opined on endlessly, but the proof is in the pudding. I doubt a company whose model is built around attracting quality writers and helping them get paid is going to simultaneously exploit them on another site. They just need a better PR writer.
