The 2014 A's are potentially the most depressing team to make the playoffs in history.

AL WC: Hosmer singles home Cain for a 3-2 lead

KANSAS CITY -- A jammed-in crowd shook Kauffman Stadium with blue thunder, releasing its pent-up passion after 28 dry years, trying to push the Royals to another great moment in their return to postseason play. It didn't happen.

@Lobo @Matt Kemp's Bath Towel In that case, do we root for a Dodgers/Giants series, because there is no way that's not a classic.

@capnsparrow  @exceedingly boring potato Not sure. This one is the biggest toss up to me. Then again, I think the Giants will beat the Pirates because I have no confidence in Volquez.

@MajorPuigBaseball @Raul Franklin @Jacopo (How is this a bad plan!) I was yelling at the TV. My in-laws thought I was simple-minded. I just had game 161 on loop in my memory.

@Jacopo (How is this a bad plan!) The announcer: "Skip Schumaker has what may be the most forgettable at bat in the history of baseball." A great statement almost swallowed by the crowd noise.

@Jacopo (How is this a bad plan!) I forgot that the plan was to bunt Uribe to get to SCHUMAKER, and Uribe almost got two separate bunts into fair territory. Unbe-fucking-lievable.

@Disgruntled Goat @Raul Franklin It was cool to see him make great plays in the ninth inning of both Dodgers victories over the Giants in the last series.

@DBrim Which part is amazing? That he was that bad, or that the Dodgers gave him enough opportunities to make that impact?

@BlueMarvin LOL if the Marlins decide it's time to "make a push".

@Ashamed Meth Goat  @Raul Franklin The one criticism I have of Vin is that he appears to have never played the role for anyone that Red Barber played for him: co-announcing and training the next generation in the core skills of the trade.

@Crushinator (Bender lover) Well, I think #3 is really unlikely, and #2 is sadly way out of character, but #1 would go a long way to erase the term Steiner'd from our collective vocabularies.

@Ashamed Meth Goat  @Raul Franklin I get the feeling Vin does not allow that.

One more announcer-related question: do announcers ever improve? I really wonder because it seems to me that Steiner could work on some specific skills and actually become a much more enjoyable announcer.

1. Announce batting practice until he can tell the difference between a homerun and a popup.
2. Write down a list of metaphors so he doesn't spend time looking for them while a play is happening.
3. Watch game tape and recognize when he is saying nothing when nothing is happening in the game, and when he is talking over exciting baseball.

@Lance Uppercut @DBrim My strategy is to worry about things irrationally, hoping that the opposition becomes irrational due to "popular angst".

The thing that's crazy about people who speak against Vin Scully seem to think that there is another announcer who pronounces all names correctly...

And any other announcer who manages to not be a homer, AND ALSO not be insanely boring.

Old Vinny is not as good as young Vinny, but seriously, old Vinny is still light years ahead of everybody else, except perhaps Bob Uecker, who is still way behind Vin.

So what are people's opinions on "staff shakeups" when a terrible team fires its manager and bench coach?

I mean, I don't love Gibson's managing, but aren't the Diamondbacks pretty much weak in every part of the roster?
