See about having the brackets reproduced in aluminum. Aluminum rivets + steel brackets will always corrode even if powdercoated. as soon as the painted/powdercoated brackets gets the rivet smashed around it, it will scratch. aluminum to steel contact will occur, electrolysis occurs, rust from behind the finish not too long after that.  you could use steel rivets too, but would need to paint them once installed to prevent rust from your lovely ocean air.

@ArmenDzulfayan Only a few places in japan that export. There are some specific companies/individuals that do it on the side, but they are rare and pretty costly. None of these smaller car lots/tuner shops usually do. Exportation is up to the buyer to arrange. It's not like new cars where they load it up on a boat full of other cars. You have to put them in a container and wait for a cargo ship to be booked enough to be worth the trip for them. Not much comes on container ships from japan aside from high end electronics. Takes a lot of drum machines and synthesizers to fill a container ship. Besides, Border Patrol and Homeland Security will hold it for months after it gets here, charging you lot fees while it sits out in a lot in the salty air and other elements at one of only a few ports in the US that are allowed to receive grey market cars. Let's say you spend 10k USD on initial purchase of the car, it will cost you almost 7k on top of it to get it here and get it released from Customs/Border Patrol. For 17k you could just build a car here.

Your best bet is to go through Canada if you want something we cant get (R-Chassis, older impreza STi's etc) and drive it across the border. Much cheaper and if you have a way of registering it permanently in Canada, you dont have to worry about the DOT seizing it and crushing it for being illegally driven on US roads.

Trust me. Its not worth it. I've gone through it.

Keep Drifting Fun.

I only see two drivers who say anything about it being fun. What gives?

If its not fun, its not drifting. If its not fun, its just another judged competition. Like ice skating.

whatever, there is a reason why the washed up dudes of past seasons stop drifting all together. And that same reason is why lots of average joe drifters will never ever want to compete. Drifting is supposed to be fun, its for people to go out and have a good time.

Its not fun when the outcome is to be better than someone else, unless you have an egotistical mindset to be better than someone, which doesn't belong in drifting anyway.

Its especially not fun when some judge who has a grudge decides to waste all the time and money people put together by biasing their judgments.

its funny too because when drifting first started out here, there were no competitions on the grassroots level. it was just drift days. Just out having fun with your friends in a fury of tire smoke and unburnt fuel. Now you pay your drift-taxed entrance fees to hopefully have some fun laps with your friends in a glorified parking lot. But instead, half of the time is spent on some stupid competition bracket. Where people try to crash into each other. Meanwhile everyone else has to sit and watch? I dont go drifting to watch it. I go drifting to go have fun. Watching is only fun when they're lesbians, and even then, its way more fun to jump in.

Hell, half the events ive been to, real tracks included, only even let two cars out at a time. Its getting to the point where you cant even tandem without a cage, harnesses, kill switches....  Dont even get me started on drift trains that are reserved for competition level cars in exhibition. Just cause some spoiled rich kid barely got his pro-am license and got daddy to pay for a pro level drift car does not mean he can drive it.

Fucking. Dumb.

American competition drifting is ruining the fun for everyone else who doesnt want anything to do with it.

I know a guy who sells ice skates if any of you pro dudes are interested.

@ELxTORO  @rbliberty08 and so saying that one of the greatest FWD platforms to ever grace the face of this planet is a fad is also not insulting? What about the MILLIONS of civics on the road? are all those people following a fad? Racing civics has been around LONG before a bunch of crazy people in japan started sliding up hills. Tell me again which one is more along the lines of a fad? the car with 30+ years of history, 20+ of those in racing, or a relatively new motorsport that isnt actually a motorsport at all, more like ice skating with tires and asphalt instead of skates and ice.

Just because it doesnt go along with your point of view doesnt make it insulting, unless youre a woman. Youre not a woman are you?

cause if you are, there are some sandwiches to be made.

when i was a youth, before i was legally allowed to operate a motor vehicle on public roadways, RC car life was my jam.

Nitro 10th scale touring cars, nitro 8th scale buggies, 10th scale off-road trucks. Drifting hadnt hit the USA yet, so no purpose built RC drift cars for me. These posts are making me finger the key to my storage bay to have a look at what ive got leftover from years past that might work as a base for drifting these days lol.

Too bad all the touring cars from my era had horrible suspension geometries and about 30 degrees of lock. AWD just masked the horrible arm angles.

I do recall removing the middle belt from a few of my nitro touring cars to make them RWD and having a blast skidding around with my buddies around courses we made from PVC pipe straightaways pressed into the open end of those floating pool noodles for turns. The smoke from the nitro engines made it look like we were doing real skids. no plastic tires back then, our cars had healthy nitro and rubber appetites. I had about 1600 USD wrapped up in my old top tier touring car. carbon fiber and billet aluminum everywhere, 1.25hp motor, 2 speed transmission. THAT car, when switched to RWD, would decimate a pair of rears in just a couple laps.

One of these days im going to a formula drift event with my nitro monster and see how well the electric AWD cars stack up against the power of FUEL

hahah sorry to ramble, this post brought me WAAAAy down memory lane. My RC car life became real car life nearly 15 years ago.

Yikes Dino, thanks for making me feel old!

Dino, tell me something about japanese culture; I dont see any security gates on that store front. Is this common in Japan? I hear theft is nearly nonexistent, but so much so that a staple in American mall shopping, The Storefront Security Gate, isnt nearly as widely used in Japan?

If so, that just solidifies my incredible respect for the Japanese culture.

When kids do burnouts and get meets shut down, we run them out, make them feel stupid and humiliate them.

If i traveled from another area to meet up with others and a bunch of attention whores ruined everything, I would gather some friends, buy some cheap cars off craigslist, and box them in one night, hitching a ride with friends away from the meet, leaving the cheap cars there to be towed and the van owners to get pissed off and in trouble for not leaving.

Selfish people exist everywhere. its up to the people who are being wronged by them to prevent it in the future.

2 years, 2 months ago on #iamthespeedhunter: 12 Hours At Bathurst

@JonathanW there isnt much in the way of getting flat floors onto cars, especially with oval piping getting cheaper. its just getting them on at the correct height and angles that causes issues. Flat underbody panels are incredibly influenced by the cars pitch and roll under loads. there is somewhere up in the car for the air to "go" when the car leans for a turn or dives under braking. with a flat floor, the air pressure difference of either side of the car creates ill effects. Flat floors and giant wings also totally change how normal production cars suspensions work. what settings gripped without aerodynamic aids will probably handle like shit as soon as the car hits any worthwhile speeds. Flat floors are also incredibly susceptible to foreign object damage, especially big ass sheets of CF.
