Great article, I really enjoyed reading this :)

@Adherent Could a double act show runner combo work? Gatiss and Chibnall? Personally I don't think the BBC would see Chibnall as a show runner, not on his own anyway.

@Planet of the Deaf @Adherent I know - Gatiss has so many strings to his bow. But if not Gatiss, who else?
@Planet of the Deaf @NewWho2012 I agree, and add that Matt did take the show to the States and helped put it on US TV network radar, even more so than David did. This will help Capaldi in a way, in terms of keeping the regular viewers on both sides of the Pond (no pun intended), but he has the burden now of maintaining those audience figures, and increasing them before series 9 starts. The Beeb it seems from this article, are still nervous about the show (why I don't know, but hey!). But if there is too much perceived pressure placed on Capaldi or unrealistic expectations are not met, the Beeb will use any excuse to pull the plug. Don't forget they are shutting down BBC3 on TV, so less traditional audience figures before the poor chap has even started!
@Adherent Just a thought, and a very long shot, but Mark Gatiss may be someone who would be interested in becoming the Doctor Who show runner. But like you I can't think of anyone else.
Dear BBC bods,
What is wrong with you? Doctor Who is THE biggest show on UK TV, and you were thinking of ending it? AGAIN? Makes you wonder what other rubbish decisions they did make - oh yeah, they got rid of Torchwood.
In future please just leave the Moff to sort out Doctor Who and ask his wife to run the Beeb, that way the right decisions will always be made.
@Planet of the Deaf @Oodkind Ooh, now there's a brilliant idea. I wonder if that's the plan, if so, McGann would have to be signed up now, and production imminent. They have around 18 months, it could be done. For the 10th anniversary they could bring back Smith and possibly Tennant with Capaldi without it looking forced, and then McGann, maybe even Hurt and CE in 2016.

I agree with others when they say the Martha and Mickey relationship seemed too lazy. It almost came across like a lame apology for mistreating their characters during Tennant's reign - Mickey and Martha couldn't be with Rose or the Doctor, so they get to settle for 2nd best - each other. How insulting to them as actors and us as the audience. Arguably the 2 most underused characters in the history of the show, and they both happen to be played by Black actors - and folks are surprised by accusations of racism?
I loved how Martha saved the day and then had the guts to walk out on the Doctor. What I don't get is why team up Mickey and Martha at the very end with little explanation. People are going to add up the few clues available, and conclude rightly or wrongly that the story development of their relationship was based on their race. Even their surnames are generic - Smith and Jones. Rose is a Tyler and Doctor Donna the Noble one, but Mickey Smith - not even Michael or Mike, but a child-like 'Mickey' (mouse) name. Insignificant names, to match how their characters were treated.
The writers appeared unable to see past Martha's gender or skin colour, and in their attempt to appear PC, they ended up emphasising the dull, boring, outdated stereotypes so often endured by female and non-White actors. A pity, when they made such a brilliant success of the Captain Jack character. The Martha/Mickey story line highlights the need for a more diverse pool of writing talent in the entertainment industry as a whole, but especially in Doctor Who. Yes, we are a tolerant society, but not an accepting one. Perhaps the Martha/Mickey relationship accurately reflects that sad state.
I liked RTD as a writer and a show runner, but he left at the right time. I do prefer Moffat's writing style, although I also think he panders to female stereotypical ideas, he at least gave River and Amy strong story lines which respected their characters. I look forward to the relationship development between Clara, Danny and Capaldi's Doctor in the hope that Danny's fate with Clara and in the show is better than Mickey's fate with Rose.

Are RTD or SM racist, sexist, homophobic? I very much doubt it and could easily find evidence to support that they are anything but. However If people are being accused of an 'ism', rather than instantly dismiss it, maybe it should be challenged - not as an excuse to attack the show runners, but to question why some feel there is an issue in the first place.
The entertainment industry as a whole needs to tackle these issues - why for instance in 2014 is there still so little diversity in the both the production team and the actors on the BBC's flagship show? For casual viewers Mickey as a character was treated poorly, as was Martha's. These famous characters played by well established actors, why are they not regarded in the same class as Amy and Rory? Yes, they have in common unrequited love, but it wasn't just from the perspective of Rose and the Doctor!
On a very base level, here we have 2 very underused Black actors in what should have been regarded as iconic roles. What happens? They end up together in the end, with little on screen explanation. There does appear to be a negative pattern, not just in Doctor Who but in most major Tv shows. I don't believe RTD or SM are to blame at all, as they are just as much 'victims' of the process, there are issues which do need to be addressed. If there is even a slight perception of racism, sexism, ageism or homophobia, there is an increased risk of alienating audiences. If it goes on for long enough, our beloved show may be taken off the air, never to return again.
@Planet of the Deaf I think the audience is more 'intelligent' than many give credit. Why would people stop watching Capaldi because they hated the McGann parallel series? Wouldn't they more likely just stick with the Doctor they liked? But I agree that in the highly unlikely event that they finally come to their senses and give McGann another movie, show, series or special etc they must give time, space and respect to Capaldi to make his own mark before they even think of doing anything else.
@VERITASERUMUK No don't give Moff ideas - he may think we should only have 3 episodes of Doctor Who every 2 years! Moff if you're reading this look into my eyes, while I wipe your memory ... and give you the story arc for a 8 and Cass spin off series ...
@Tremas With all due respect to the American TV networks, and echoing the thoughts of Kate Lethbridge-Stewart ... I would strongly suggest not.
@Oodkind The thing is, if they did bring back Smith and McGann for the 10th anniversary, they would also have to bring back Tennant and possibly Hurt. On the other hand, while it would be completely wrong to risk diminishing Capaldi's tenure, it would be equally wrong giving McGann just a few mini episodes. If after 1 mini episode fans are demanding a full comeback, I don't think they would be happy with minisodes - I know I wouldn't be. It would either have to be a full blown series or 2 shown at a different time to Capaldi or a movie, this time made and controlled by the Moff/BBC. In an ideal world for me it would be a couple of series, but to be fair to Capaldi, a movie may be better.
@Notsosmartguy the Superior Venom @Oodkind I doubt Chris will ever comeback. If the 50th didn't tempt him, 10 truckloads of money isn't going to do it. However, should the BBC wish, I would be happy to take Chris' place for a mere 3 truckloads ...
@Malohkeh @DrWholocked K9 and Company? Please leave the TARDIS by nearest exit and never return! Sadly no McGann in Classic Who and I would like to see and hear him. Yes I know, I'm being greedy :(
@Malohkeh @Notsosmartguy the Superior Venom @DrWholocked Paternoster Gang, now there's a fantastic idea. OK Moff, I would like to make a revision to my Christmas list - I want 2 spin offs now :D
I secretly want Cass to be the original version of Clara, after all they both wanted to see the universe, and they both crashed landed in space ships and neither despite the Doctor's efforts were saved. There you go Moff, that's your story arc, you just need to fill in the gaps and you have a movie. I only charge 10% of all profits, a cup of tea, with a couple of jammy dodgers.
@giddir While I completely agree that Capaldi show be allowed to enjoy the spotlight 100%, I would make the exception for McGann. We have many Doctors in the audio series, and that hasn't diminished the focus on the TV series. If it is made clear that the no.9 and Cass adventures are stand alone spin-offs and as long the shows are not broadcasted at the same time, it could work. Alternatively make a spin off movie.
OMG - Calling Moff, come in Moff - Pretty, Pretty, ppppllllllleeeeeeaaaaassssseeeeee do a spin-off, or better still a movie. After all McGann deserves it, plus there is a whole world of possibilities with Cass's character. Actually I take that back, I want a couple of series from number 8 and Cass. We've no Torchwood or Sarah Jane (RIP), we need something to fill the dark winter nights in-between Doctor Who and Sherlock. Come on Moff, you know you want to. Pppppplllllllleeeeeeeaaaaaaaassssssseeee:)
@The_Eternal_Dalek Ah, but on screen, it hasn't been said for certain Cass is dead. How do we know that the Sisters didn't bring her back to life in the same way as the Doctor? This story has legs and the Who crew need to let it run - puns intended :)
I loved series 7, and I too don't get all the Moffat 'hate'. Yes you can argue that some of the female characters could have a bit more bite, but then that's not Moff's fault. Amy and River were 2 of the best written female characters in the history of the show, I just wish their wardrobes were a bit more 'practicable'. Otherwise the acting - brilliant, the plots - brilliant, the writing - brilliant - nope can't think why there is so much negativity. I think that some viewers just need to open their eyes, hearts and minds a little more.
Moff keep it up. Miss Matt (and David!) but I'm looking forward to seeing Peter as the Doctor and hope that Clara gets more story development. Roll on August!
10 months ago on Why I Love… Series 7
Lady Christina, the Doctor's Daughter, Martha and Cass. Of those, my number 1 choice would be Cass. Wouldn't it be ace if Cass turned out to be the original version of Clara? Moff, I want a 10% cut for providing that story arc. Cash only, no cheques! :D

@Liana21 I really like your theory, it's a nice way to incorporate all the Doctors :)

Don't forget McGann's brilliant minisode. They can't put all the doctors in, you have to leave something for the 10th anniversary of NuWho! Smith is right, they got the 50th spot on, now move on!
Yippee! Smith back, and with Paul, David and fingers crossed Chris, together with Peter, that's got classic written all over it! Looking forward to it already. Please, please, please Moff, make it so :)
