@ChrisB To clarify for others, are you running latest version of iOS7, too?

@Chaoticpattern The PC version was cancelled, then Playdek stepped in to help on a cross-platform, whicch was just kickstarted successfully. Yes, it is confusing ;)

@Jkimmings As the one who approves reviews, I've always said that if it plays like a board game, it's worth reviewing. Whether it's digital only really doesn't matter - if a game was projected digitally onto a table, would that suddenly make it acceptable to you? If a physical version was made after a digital version, then it becomes ok?
I'm not sure I see your point about the video: the review is written first, then an audio commentary is made from that, for the video. What would you suggest? The intention was to give an alternative - you can read a review with screenshots, or watch it in video form where you get footage of the game too.

@Stainlessoul There is AI - a number of different levels. Click on local game, and change the player icons for computers. You should be able to select from different personalities.

@PaulThorn1 Thanks, we'll publish a new review since it's rebranding as "Small World 2"

@RxDocSF Just the base game, but it's safe to assume there'll be DLC at some point. No word on that yet though.

@Loganeer I actually click on all the spaces to turn on the text for them though, so I think I would have preferred a stricter layout similar to the actual board game. Yeh, it looks nice, but it doesn't help to transition anyone between the two.

@goldentail I don't think mini pasture ahould activate hedge keeper, no. The mini pasture is a little bonus, not a bonus-initiating action.
@zenmaster24 Whoops, thanks, looks like I missed a digit of the end of the iTunes ID. Fixed!

@Colin_at_cu Hmm, Enterprise Edition only, sadly. Would have liked to try that, though god knows how big much space you'd need on the USB drive if it's cliaming to run all your regular desktop apps too.

@AKwasp Holy shit, that's a horrible disease. Imagine not even being able to cuddle your own fucking child because the slightest touch could hurt like a muth... . I think a little compassion on the part of the restaurant might have been called for in this case. They obviously weren't a health risk, and people can easily avert their eyes if they're disturbed by it. Relevant:
Personally, I avert my eyes whenever I see a fat ugly person, but I hardly have the right to throw them out of a restaurant. Glad the place got sued their ass off for that.

@Zac I think the review is very fair actually; I've never heard of the original, and bought this as it is just to see if the review was perhaps a little too harsh. But no - I stand by what Tom has said about the game, regardless of his comparisons to the original. This doesn't work as a game; it is designed to be multiplayer, and played with friends. Like munchkin. Can you imagine a single player version of munchkin? Of course not, it would be stupid.
Anyway, we'll miss you. That is of course why we have comments and user voting - so you can voice your opinion and/or vote, but if you really think disagreeing with a single review is grounds to dismiss everything on the site, then I feel sorry for you.
1 year, 7 months ago on Talisman Prologue
@Fbergero Oh come on, the quest and talisman-collecting mechanics is clearly a weak way of propping up a "game" with no actual gameplay. If someone told you to complete monopoly in less than X turns to get Y monopoly points before doing the whole thing again, does that really count as fun?
I can't help thinking those 5 star reviews were written in reaction from fans, rather than people who actually played the game. And the desire to justify a $5 purchase as not completely worthless is certainly a strong factor too. Let's face it though - we got duped.
@Fbergero I downloaded this game, unsure of why its getting such great reviews when Tom says it sucks. And as someone who's never played Talisman before, this is the worst excuse for a "game" I've ever had the displeasure to come across. Why are there things saying "miss a turn" when I'm the only one playing? Why is it fun to mindlessly roll a dice, pick a card, and do the whole thing again. I'm beginning to think this is just some dark social experiment. How on earth are they charging £2.99 for this? It's like a really bad monopoly, which is pretty bad anyway, exaserbated by the fact you[re playing with yourself!
@Cocoasm Yup, under review as we speak. Expect something from Tom soon.

@mandule They do get messy, as the bars are just as big as the holes in-between. It's very easy to remove them though and give them a quick wash.
1 year, 8 months ago on Eglu Cube Review
@DukeRitenhouse Sadly, that's all that gets released nowadays. Hasn't been a decent conversion of an actual board game in a while. We actually turn down a huge number of abstract games too that are just worse than a 1/10.
1 year, 9 months ago on Pirate Armada
@DukeRitenhouse @majmitch Thanks for the update Duke; I missed that, as I never backed it. I'll probably back the new campaign, though it has left a bitter taste.
1 year, 10 months ago on How NOT to Run a Kickstarter Campaign: Small World 2
@andsoitgoes That doesn't make sense either. The game is $7 on iTunes now - wouldn't someone who wants this just buy that and wait for the "update"? That's $8 for 3 new random powers then? Hmmm. Also, why call it "small world 2"? It's still small world!
Nope, sorry, something reeks here.
I agree though, I love the game, but don't agree with using kickstarter like this to update a game they should have done ages ago.
1 year, 11 months ago on How NOT to Run a Kickstarter Campaign: Small World 2
@Jay1242 That's a fair point Jay, we appreciate your input and I expect your vote has been added. Keith or myself would only be able to look at this from the viewpoint of the average game; none of us are particularly familiar with wargaming niche. Perhaps you'd consider submitting a sample review to join the team as a wargaming specialist? I'm sure there's quite a few war games we haven't got reviews for yet.

Sorry for the late reply Mark. Good question. I have some other sites with content just sitting there that has ranked before, so I take those articles, redirect all to the new domain, and monitor the rank. If I redirected properly, they should see the ranks move over fairly quickly.
Tests seem to be successful so far, but I'll keep an eye on it longer in case the rank suddenly dies.
2 years, 2 months ago on Update: Impending Developments
Would you be happy as long as I provided RSS feeds for the iPad boardgames only content?
@Bruce Baugh Excellent idea, and probably the best way to start.
@DukeRitenhouse We cover iPhone already anyway, but I contend the idea that other site can do things better. I can do anything better than someone else if I put my mind to it!
@Carlos Ascanio Thanks Carlos; Android coverage will be rare initially, but certainly something I want to allow for.
Really want to go with something more catchy though.. Anyway, I have a domain picked out. Just trying to establish if that TLD is rankable right now... If tests are positive, will begin a migration in the following months.
Appreciate the input; board gaming on the Android is still very much in it's infancy, of course. I think expanding variety of games covered will be good as long as we stick to high quality stuff that board gamers are likely to be interested in - not just any old puzzle game or RPG, but something really worthwhile checking out. And I will of course provide feeds to bypass all that too...
@frankie321 Thanks so much for your considered input Frankie, it shall certainly be taken on board.
@Scutterman Yep, I blame America and their stupid litigation culture for making the concept of waivers and TOSes a thing, and forcing them on the rest of the world. We couldn't give a shit about TOSes in England, because no one would sue iTunes. Why is the American answer to everything "I'll see you in court!"
2 years, 2 months ago on Talk To Your Friends for $7
Possibly a little too "exact match", which Google is cracking down on.
Actually, the latest figures showed iPads *gaining* market share, as the Android alternatives weakened. However, I would expect this to change once they account for the new Kindle FireHD and upcoming Google tablet (though Surface won't dent a damn thing). I think covering other platforms is certainly the way to go; but if you look at the state of boardgaming on the Android platform right now the siutation is dire - in terms of official Eurogames, you have Catan, and thats it. It's like the iPad, 2 years ago. So definately worth getting a foot in there now, though it wont have much impact on the site for a while yet.
In fairness, there isn't an awful of board games on Android, so it's not like there would be a huge amount of that.
Seriously, only in Japan..."take on the role of masters of the house in control of serving maids". A part of me thought card games were something their maid fetish couldn't quite reach, but I guess not :p
Thanks for weighing in Steve - we always appreciate hearing from the actual developers! Seems like the comment thread got a bit out of hand here...

@Scutterman Do Not Track as in the browser option, or as in the plugin? The plugin will break everything, but the browser option is actually dependant on the website; in other words, you might be telling MUO to not track you, but our server doesnt support it, so we ignore it. That's the problem with this whole thing; it's up to advertisers whether to support it or not. So the good guys will honour it , and not track you, while the scammy ads will continue to do so anyway, basically making the problem worse.
From what I read on wikipedia, 4G = LTE. Isn't that the case?

@Scutterman I think I hated Metal Gear because I was expecting a shooter. It's really more of a 3D puzzle game.
Chess is a deliberately abstract game; the colours obviously do not represent races. This game is using tired racial profiling specifically for the purpose of characterization. Big difference.
2 years, 3 months ago on Cafe International
@andsoitgoes @James You may be right about such low pricing; but then again, it means I can spend more on more games - that has to be a good thing. Given that there is a clear pricing discrepancy anyway in IRL versions of Carcassonne and Lost Cities, you would expect that to be similar here: they simply couldnt price it anywhere near the same, even if it were universal, because the game just isnt as complex. If carcassone is bang on at $9.99, then this iPhone only app shouldn't sell for more than $1.99; add in an iPad version to sweeten deal, and I'll accept $3.99 happily.
As for review scores, they're entirely subjective. If you've read Angelus' reviews, you'll know a 6 is a solid game - he's not afraid to give less than a 4 when the game warrants it. Compare that to many reviewers that will only ever vary between 7-9 ... it's just pointless. We made a 10 point scale, so use it. 1 sucks ass, 10 is the most amazing thing in the world ; 6 is a solid game, but flawed in some way - in this case, a lack of iPad version. If they release an update to correct this, you can be damn sure we'll either release a prominent news story or a complete re-evaluation - as we did in fact, with Catan and then Catan HD. If they release a separate version though; well, I'm sure we'll be ready to call them money grabbing bastards, but review it anyway.
As for comments on reviews; I'm a writer myself on a far bigger site. If no one says anything, you're doing it wrong ;)
2 years, 3 months ago on Lost Cities
I dont agree with the Le Havre score either, but thats why we have user ratings too; these scores are subjective, so let the wisdom of the crowd win out.
However, not making this a universal app is just ridiculous. It's not a particularly complex game, either. Are they planning to release a separate iPad version at additional cost, or just not bother?
$3.99 for an iPhone and fairly light strategy/card game seems a little expensive to me; the lack of universal app is just not acceptable in this day and age.
@APML Thanks for the heads-up, fixed the error.
