The very best keyboard replacement is missing from this list. MessagEase, from Exideas (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.exideas.mekb) is not an imitation QWERTY keyboard, but an innovation, designed and optimized for touch keyboards.
@XerBlade There are two flaws in your post, two points that are untrue. 1) The speed: not considering prediction, which is orthogonal to the speed of the KEYBOARD, MessagEase is performing much faster for me and many others that I know. Many are texting at 50+ WPM and the record holders are at 60+. This is done with NO dictionary assistance, with NO prediction assistance. Swiftkeys is really an add on prediction technology and not a keyboard. Similar tecnologies (such as Adaptxt) can be employed to the same effect to further enhance MessaagEase's speed. And 2) A simple TAP on the Hand button hides MessagEase's keyboard.
It's is extremely interesting that Swiftkeys' CMO tried to convince Brooks Barnard, NOT TO review MessagEase! What is Swiftkeys afraid of?
The ONLY reason you should change your keyboard is to change it something more advanced like MessagEase keyboard https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.exideas.mekbIt's amazingly innovative, VERY fast and accurate, and optimized for small touch screens. It is very different than what you're used to so it'll take a bit of getting used to. But download and try it. It will save you hours of your time.
@newway_lw take a look at their languages implementation. They have it for Russian, Arabic, etc. For Roman languages, it turns out that the letter frequency pattens are quite close. Similar to what QWERTY turns into AZERTY for French, the French keyboard of MessagEase only differs in one letter. This closeness of letter patten can make the standard English one work for French as well, like many French people use QWERTY instead of AZERTY.Or we can continue with QWERTY which is designed to be almost frequency-hostile! :)
@Brooks Barnard I grant you that there is a category of QWERTY keyboards out there and there are several good ones. But my point is about touch screens, small touch screens, one-handed input, or in short the NEW TECHNOLOGY input, for most, if not all, QWERTY is a fail. The elephant in the room is that we are sticking with a very old design for NO REAL GOOD REASON.I admire your curiosity about MessagEase, and if you go through their stuff, you'll see that it's created to address ALL these issues. So speed is ONE issue. Entering non-dictionary words is another. And there are many others.
So if you want a competition based on typing a something that is not in the dictionary while walking at 5 miles/hour carrying a grocery bag with the other hand, I am game :)
But seriously, by saddling a broken tool with bandaids of new technology (i.e., dictionary disambiguation, "intelligent" prediction, etc.) we ignore the central issue that the buttons on QWERTy are 1) too many, 2) too small, and 3) arranged in an idiotic asinine way.I think it's time to be honest with our neurotic obsessing with legacy. This maybe uncomfortable at first, but VERY good for us.
@Brooks Barnard It LOOKS nuts! but it really isn't. Give it five minutes and try the game they have. There have been MANY people who felt the same way at first, but now use this keyboard as their only keyboard (read the comments on Google Play). Just because we've been doing the same thing over and over doesn't mean it's right. The game: (MessagEase Game) is also on google play and free.
And please note that there are people who routinely text at 50-60 WPM with MessagEase!
QWERTY is SO eighteenth century. Instead of dealing with tiny keys, a keyboard like MessagEase ( and available for free on the Google Play). is the answer. MessagEase is VERY innovative. with fewer, larger keys, it lets you enter everything from one keyboard. There is a learning curve, but there's also a game to help you learn it fast.
I highly recommend it.
