Ironically, A&M's offense is the only one in the SEC worth watching. I didn't watch much, of course, b/c they're no longer Big 12. The rest of that league? Overrated defenses because of offensive futility. Zzzzz
I don't see how John Swofford pulled this off without an ACC Network or some other monetary incentive for the "football first" schools; FSU, Clemson, VaTech. Maybe ESPN ran the numbers and decided to up the ante for the ACC to head off bidding war with FOX? I want to see the details of the GoR.
@I4Bama Petersen has turned down EVERYBODY. Word is, his family loves Boise and money isn't his prime motivation. Tough to pry him away especially if Harsin bad-mouthed UT on his way out.
I suspect Strong turned down TN b/c it's a tough job. Very little in-state talent. Alumni have unrealistic expectations, too. Comparing Vols to TX is apples & oranges. UT should be much easier to recruit and win.
Another rumor I've heard is Saban's wife doesn't like Tuscaloosa. Doesn't mean he'd leave for UT b/c it's a lateral move and arguably a step down. I'm not convinced his personality will play at Texas anyway.
@aubieman2002 That's true, provided Freeze did it by the rules. SEC people have their doubts right now, from what I've read and heard.
Only a few guys would be an attractive option; Boise's Petersen, L'Ville's Strong and maybe Vandy's Franklin. Whittingham? Perhaps. Or maybe we go the top level assistant route. Bama's DC, Kirby Smart?
A fair review of the defense's shortcomings.
My hope is that Diaz starts Jackson, Jinkins and Hicks at LB. J's on the outside, Hicks at MLB. Jeffcoat may provide scheme versatility, too, as our buck. We can move him around and line up in 3-4 or 4-3.
Very interesting supposition, John.
I hope you're right about the B1G not accepting schools without AAU status. FSU is still #1 on the Big12's hit list.
@BonzaiB Bless your little heart, Bubba, for feeling compelled to reply with such long-winded, nonsense. "If you deduct 3 points for the HOME team, Bama wins one and Texas wins the other by a single point." LOL...and if my aunt had balls, she'd be my uncle. Rice was fairly dominate in the 50's, too, since you're a trivia buff. Here's one more fact about the "dominating" SEC; 21-17 all-time versus the B1G in bowl games.
TAMU won't be "eating our lunch" b/c they're not, and won't be, on the schedule anytime soon. Aggy averaged sixth place in the Big12 and improved their record to 5th against the titans of the SEC West; Arky, Ole Miss, Miss St. and Au-barn.
LOL...We're Texas. Learn it, know it, live it. ESS EEE CEE!
Best case scenario for the Big 12?
UVA & GaTech to B1G
UNC & Duke to SEC
FSU, Miami, Clemson, Virginia Tech, NC State and Louisville to the Big 12
I would absolutely LOVE this. WVU will be ecstatic to have The U, L'Ville and VaTech in their division, too.
Good analysis, John.
I always assumed Boston College was AAU and better academically. If the B1G expands, I foresee some combination of UVA, GaTech and UNC. Of course, the Tar Heels will get their choice of B1G or SEC. Very interesting.
@Honus The Dude Sneed @uncbare Yeah, I thought that looked funny in your post. NCST makes sense.
WVU really dislikes UNC that much? What did they do besides insult Oliver Luck?
@uncbare No doubt. UNC has its choice of either B1G or SEC today. Laughable to even consider Big 12 for Tar Heels.
Interesting speculation, but I find it highly unlikely that B1G member institutions waive the AAU requirement for FSU. I think it's more likely the B1G adds BC, GT and potentially UVA & UNC. Eventually, FSU, Clemson and whomever else gets left behind (VT, NCSU, Miami) will begrudgingly join the Big 12 (not Duke).
I do agree that Texas needs to think more about the Big 12's long-term viability and not just our own best interests. DeLoss Dodd's retirement will hopefully change that mindset. We'll see.
Why would the B12 "allow" KU to leave for the B1G? What type of compensation is equitable? Do you really think L'Ville or Pitt is in play AGAIN after joining the ACC recently?
Place KU in West and KSU in East with a protected rivalry game annually.
Not crazy about Miami or their bandwagon fan base. But, South FL is a huge DMA and great recruiting territory for B12. We can help fill up Sun Life Stadium. Be a nice vacation!
True, most Aggies don't like it when their logic or integrity is questioned.
Sorry if you think my postings are "excessive". Thanks for being and staying classy.
LOL...yeah, I'm bitter. Richest athletic department in the country, highest-profile public university in TX, etc. Delusional, as always, aggy. Funny how the academically-challenged SEC doubled their AAU schools by adding A&M and Mizzou.
The only "status" that we concern ourselves with is UT. Speaking of blowouts to OU, wanna compare aggy's record versus The University's? You may get your shot against OU in the Fiesta Bowl, little lady.
Boomer Sooner!
Academics weren't the driver behind A&M's move...greater athletic revenues and better exposure were. Academics are and will be a consideration for UT if we ever think about moving again. It won't happen for at least 13 years, minimum, since Big 12 members signed a "grant of rights" for our TV revenues.
That's a fair and reasonable response, Andrew, but UT needs money like a fish needs water. No offense, but the UT vs TCU game will be sold out @ DKR and will be played before a national TV audience. Playing TCU doesn't help the TX economy? Why not? I'd argue that we'll generate even more $$$ playing TCU @ JerryWorld, too, assuming that they remain competitive.
You little aggies sure like to cling to the fantasy that "UT was trying to bully us into the Pac-12" story. That's nonsense, too. But, that's the only acceptable justification for making a move IF The University actually decided to go West.
But, we did not for two reasons; 1. UT wanted to keep Longhorn Network 2. UT administration decided playing half our games in the Pacific time zone wasn't good for our fans
Please provide a link where A&M consulted playing Tech and Baylor in FOOTBALL. You know that's BS, too. Your attitude towards those schools mirrors ours towards A&M. I'm sure you wanted to play them in basketball and non-rev sports. Keeps your travel costs down and pacifies your fans in TX.
Congratulations on being "happier and richer". Now compare your annual athletic revenues, where you now rank 6th in the SEC, to The University's and get back to me. Ignorance is bliss and you're one happy Aggy!
