@johnnyb3910 I asked Zipay this question on twitter yesterday, he seemed to think they were coming back to NY for a few days and then flying back to Phoenix.

Ugh. Wasn't Torts asked specifically about Hagelin on the power play? And then gave his honest, no bull shit assesment as to why Hagelin wasn't being used. Now its being blown out of proportion when guys like Pierre are taking the next step and saying Torts would rather throw players under the bus than own up to coaching failures.

I can totally see where most of you are coming from in diluting the "novelty" of the Jan 1st Winter Classic game, but from my understanding this is merely part of a Winter Classic series if you will, maybe not using "Winter Classic" name in the secondary games but a series nonetheless.
From a league standpoint I just don't see how it minimizes the Jan 1st game initially. By revenue? I doubt it. Hype? Maybe, but if the revenue and TV ratings are there who cares? This will be a huge cash bonus for the league, not to mention mainstream exposure. But if this is something that continues year after year its hard not to see the Jan 1st game as just another game. But maybe that's ok if that's the direction the league wants to go in. Have one big game and then smaller outdoor games in different venues each year.
One important thing to remember is that the NHL hasn't come close to its full potential in TV deals. The Winter Classics have killed it in TV ratings, and the outdoor games are sure to do well also. This is all about exposure and growing the brand. All they want to do here is expand into markets that haven't experienced an outdoor game yet so they can suck out some untapped revenue streams from fans to sponsors to TV deals.

Maybe with Zucc sitting tonight we'll see some fire from guys like Boyle, Pyatt, and Newbury out of fear of being scratched on Saturday.

yep, just like Del Zotto, although I hope they can sign all 3 without any issues...

Damn, I was really hoping for another John Scott or something.
I want to believe that the Rangers value his long term health above all else, but this really makes me scratch my head. I know we really need the points right now but Lundqvist also really needs a rest. I'm all for having Biron start tomorrow night. Need a healthy Hank down the stretch.
11 months, 2 weeks ago on Is Lundqvist Playing With a Concussion?
I agree with you on the consistency issue. Its a broken system. But you honestly can't comapre the Kaleta/Richards incident to this hit. Apples and Oranges. Look up the video of the Swedish player being paralyzed by a hit into the boards and you'll see where I'm coming from.
11 months, 2 weeks ago on Nash to Likely Hear from League After High Hit
I disagree that this was worse.
I'm not disputing what the video shows. If you want my thoughts on the hit scroll down the comments section.
Call it what you will, but his head was lowered as a result of him taking the shot.
I'm surprised there wasn't at least a hearing. For a league that's really trying to "protect its players" there certainly isn't much consistency; conistency brings legitimacy, and people wonder why we think the Departmet of Player Safety doesn't have any. I only thought there wold be a fine, so I guess I can't say I'm THAT surprised. But still, another fail by the NHL and its Department of Player Safety.
First time I saw this I though wow, that's a definite suspension. But the more I watched it and thought about it I'm not so sure its as bad as it looks. Obviously I'm biased here but hear me out. Was Nash frustrated? Probably. I'm not sure if anyone noticed, but a few minutes prior to this play Nash found himself being groped by a few Panthers in front of the net, second time in a few minutes it happened to him. So I can understand his frustration in wanting to lay a hit.
But unfortunately for Nash it was a terrible effort at a hit. It looked to me like he wanted to surprise Kopecky to a hit in the chest but didn't realize Kopecky was going to shoot and lower his head. I actually see Nash leaving his feet as a sub par effort to get out of the way while incidentally hitting Kopecky in the head.
I'm not defending what Nash did here because he should know that this is a reckless and dangerous hit, but I just don't think the intent to target the head was there. I'd be surprised if he got more than a game. I actually think he'll just be fined. There have been many more egregious hits that have warranted less than 2 game suspensions.
No surprise here, but there becomes a point in which Dolan will really start to price out the majority of the die hard fan base that has been lining his pockets for so many years. Have you seen what a home game is like at the Air Canada Center in Toronto? Talk about pricing out your fan base, that place can be as quiet as a library.

@CareyBrandsdorfer an independent arbitrator can be called in for an appeal process if the suspension is more than 6 games, so in this case it could have worked to the NHL's disadvantage if they suspend him more than 5 games, as it could have been overturned to a penalty of a lesser extent.
I think he deserves more than a 5 game suspension, but I will be happy if the NHL gives him the maximum of 5 games since this is a phone hearing; it gives Kaleta the harshest penalty without the possibility of a third party arbitrator to lessen the penalty. But if they don't, I'll be shaking my head in disbelief, this is another perfect opportunity for the NHL to show how much they value player safety.
1 year ago on Did Kaleta Hit Finally Turn Rangers Into a 'Team'?
I agree the playoff format is less than ideal. There has to be another option they can explore.
1 year ago on NHL Realignment Becoming a Reality
I understand your points but I disagree. I don't believe the ratings problem is network related at all, and NBC has TV rights to the NHL until 2021 so nothing is changing on that front anytime soon.
As for your point about ratings for a Boston vs Montreal game in other states, or a national audience so to speak, isn't really the main point the NHL is going after here in regards to a realignment. The main purpose is to bolster ratings in regional markets in an effort to secure big local TV contracts (think NESN, MSG, etc.)
The NHL always needed to realign, and it was really expeditied because of the Thrashers move up to Winnipeg that created a whole bunch of problems. Not to mention the constant complaints of teams like Columbus who have been asking to move to the East for a long time.
I like it. And we need to keep in mind this is being done with future league expansion in mind. While it not only makes sense logistically for the league (more 7pm games for teams in the central and west, also means higher tv ratings) it creates the opportunity for huge jumps in revenue. 5 of the original 6 teams in the same conference is a huge marketing tool, especially for the rekindling of old rivalries amongst the original 6. I think this is great for the league.
Maybe Boyle can find his offensive spark tonight like he did in round 1 last year.

@NlordYstanleyR @KevinDeLury good point, and I guess the latest Hossa hit is a perfect example of that.
