@Yaknowwhat Shanahan: The Swarm "wasn’t successful here."

Good post but Kyle Quincey isn't a comparable. He signed his deal as a UFA this summer.

The problem with some of the other deals as comparables is they eat into UFA years, which Franson's obviously wouldn't out of arb.

I'm really not sure they can afford him. Be surprised if he gets anything less than $2-million - and is he worth that for his offensive contributions?

Reimer has bargaining power: arb rights. And goalies with his numbers have made out pretty well as RFAs recently.

@CanuckUKinToronto @MapleLeafsHS @APetrielli  The coaching staff has asked them to push more for offence. It's been really clear the last 10-15 games and, I think, the reason they've generating closer to 30 shots per game from 26ish they were at earlier.

Gleason helps too in that he eats the most defensive zone starts and Gunnarsson-Phaneuf get less heavy loads.

@lieffan What they do down the middle is going to be really interesting. Is Kadri-Bozak good enough as a 1-2 on a contender? I think they'd need a pretty good three who can challenge those two if that's the case.

It's only been two games, but maybe Kulemin could be a factor in that.

"Can the Leafs afford another centre iceman that makes over $4 million?"

They can if it's someone who can challenge for the No. 1 hole and limit Bozak's minutes. That's about it though.

@Anthony Petrielli  I agree, I don't think Holland can play wing - I talked to him about it and he's willing to try, but he has basically no experience there save for a few games in junior.

He's a great example of what you're talking about - they need to find a way to develop and use some of these cheaper players are effective depth. The problem if Carlyle has a long, long history of not using his fourth line. Look at how he played Bonino and where that player is now for the Ducks.

@dlb eh McClement's advanced stats were very positive actually when used in a defined role - he was a good bet at the price they got him.

@TheCanucksnaphook The point is that plus-minus is hugely influenced by randomness. To a degree that renders it almost useless. It's why players like Marek Malik and Jeff Schultz lead the league in it.

I wish I'd taken a picture of press row at MSG this week. I'm in my early 30s and easily, if not the youngest, then one of the youngest that was in the press box there.

It was a very veteran crew.
