I don't know how it is in other states, but I know that LSU plays schools like UL-Monroe and UL-Lafayette because the state legislature passed a law "encouraging" them to do so. And it makes sense from a financial and fan base perspective. If you have a non-conference hole in your schedule, why not fill it with an in-state school that's a few hours away. That allows their fan base to travel to the game, sells more tickets, hot dogs, etc and keeps the dollars all in the state. I don't think LSU should be playing the likes of Towson on W. Kentucky or St. Mary's School for the Blind, but I have no problem with them playing ULL or UL Monroe or La Tech.

Interesting that Miss State has about half the budget of Tenn but comes in about half a million ahead on net profit. And Auburn is spending a LOT of money for not that much return.
