5-5 over their last 10. Best record of any of the teams at the bottom of the standings. Kings are probably the only team in the bottom 14 who aren't tanking at the moment. However, the Kings need to stay in the bottom 12 to help ensure they keep their pick.
7 months, 2 weeks ago on Sunday Musings: Are the Sacramento Kings tanking?
@SacKingsI agree with your second paragraph. IT is obviously wearing down in the 4th quarter of games and his shooting is suffering. Playing a guy who is just coming off the flu 42 minutes is NOT good coaching.
8 months, 3 weeks ago on Game 47 Preview: Sacramento Kings at San Antonio Spurs
@Black_Who@CowbbI think they Kings would trade Thorton for a sack of rocks in a heartbeat at this point. The problem is no one is going to be willing to take on his bloated salary that still has another year left on it after this one.
9 months, 2 weeks ago on CK Press Box Report: Sacramento Kings 103, Orlando Magic 83
@KingznutOne of the main reasons Jimmer has been playing so well lately is how smart Coach Malone has been about his minutes. Jimmer is typically going up against backup PG's and SG's. This masks his defensive liabilities and makes it easier for him to handle the ball and get his own shot. Jimmer really struggles against the super quick PG's and Malone is careful not to put him out there too long against those type of guys.
I really like what Jimmer has been providing lately as the backup PG/Combo guard, but IT is clearly the better overall PG right now. I think Jimmer should continue to get 15-20 minutes a game and allowed to ride it out with more minutes when he gets really hot, isn't turning the ball over and is able to play serviceable defense.

11 months, 1 week ago on So you want to coach the Sacramento Kings?
@ChrisDoster @KrishnanCoughran @TABDOG You have basically exposed yourself with that last comment. Yeah, those role players won all those championships. Didn't have anything to do with the guys names David Robinson, Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili. Not too mention every player you mentioned is known for defense, something Jimmer greatly lacks.
Demarcus Cousin is FAR from elite at this point in his career. Grep Popovich would himself would tell you he couldn't win with the Kings roster.
Not exactly what you mean by the last comment? My photo is attached to the name. Feel free to Google and figure out if I live with my Mom you tool! Not hiding, so feel free to come find me to talk about it at the next Kings game tough guy.
@KDsmooth What? To day Jimmer is a better defender than IT is not supported by any statistical evidence and completely fails the eye ball test!
11 months, 1 week ago on Sunday Musings: The Isaiah Thomas conundrum
Thank you for this article. If Isaiah was taller our fan base would be up in arms over the fact he isn't starting. I can't for the life of me figure out why the Kings would want their 2nd best player coming off the bench? Championships teams like the Spurs may have that luxury, but not the Kings. Could you imagine if Jimmer was putting up the numbers of IT and not starting? Kings' fans would be going bezerk!
The Kings have come out flat too often and Vasquez would be better off defending backup PG's rather than starters. I would love to see those two flip flop roles. Isiah needs to get 35 minutes a game. Too often because he is coming in off the bench his minutes are in the 20's.
I was a big proponent of Jimmer coming out of college, but I will admit to being very down on him over the last couple years. His ball handling was not up to NBA PG standards and his defense was atrocious. However, with the new staff playing him as a combo guard and helping cover his deficiencies on defense with a more team oriented concept, I'm really intrigued to see what Jimmer can do. If he can get even close to Thorton's production, than the best move would be to trade Thorton and his large contract if possible.
1 year ago on Sunday Musings: The Jimmer Fredette Dilemma
No real reason as fans to be offended. This has everything to do with the previous ownership/management regime and nothing to do with the fans. With Ranadive and company in place, the Kings organization won't be last on this list ever again.
1 year ago on Poll: Are you offended by the Sacramento Kings' last place finish in ESPN's annual franchise rankings?
@Cowbb I think we will see a lot of moves prior to the trading deadline.
1 year, 1 month ago on Sunday Musings: On the future of the current Sacramento Kings roster
I hadn't really thought about P-Pat at the SF position much. I guess that is an intriguing proposition, but he would probably have a real hard time guarding against quickness at SF.
1 year, 2 months ago on Poll: Who should the Sacramento Kings start at small forward on opening night?
Dang, I wish the Kings had found a way to sign Anderson as a FA last year. We got Maloofed on that one.
1 year, 2 months ago on WATCH: Ryan Anderson on Sacramento keeping the Kings, playing with DeMarcus Cousins
Man, the more I learn about Vasquez the more I love this move!! He is the exact type of "player" and "personality" the Kings have been sorely lacking the last five years.
1 year, 2 months ago on Everybody loves Greivis Vasquez
I think both guys will get plenty of playing time. I even think the two would play well together with Isiah playing the scoring guard role and Vasquez playing PG on O and defending the SG position. IT is ideally suited to provide a scoring punch off the bench, but so is Thorton and Jimmer. I think one of the three will eventually get traded.
1 year, 2 months ago on Poll: Who wins the Sacramento Kings' starting point guard battle?
@asharma6 No way. The difference is Mbah Moute knows his role as a defender and rebounder. He won't try to be a scorer like Johnson did. Johnson never accepted his offensive limitations.
1 year, 2 months ago on Poll: Grading the Sacramento Kings offseason to this point
Funny. I have always thought Tyreke Evans was just a glorified John Salmons. The real problem with Salmons is he is fading fast as he gets older. Defense not nearly what it used to be and he has clearly lost a step. Thus, John Salmons four years ago would work at SF, but not this version of Salmons. His PER last year was one of the worst in the league.

John Salmons as the best option is an oxymoron.

completely understand the stance of not wanting to overpay for Tyreke

@Guest107 Bizzaro Jimmer maybe?
1 year, 3 months ago on Sacramento Kings look for a new brand of basketball with the addition of Greivis Vasquez
I completely disagree that the rest of the league thinks they can turn Tyreke into an all-star. If that were true, we would have seen a lot more offers for Tyreke. Further, Tyreke is not nearly the "team" basketball player that Andre Iguodala is, so that comparison doesn't resonate with me. Clearly the new regime is looking for players with better court vision. I don't see this move as strange at all. Sound basketball decision not to over-pay for a player they don't believe is worth $11 million a year. You set a precedent for spending $2 million too much to keep players and all of a sudden you have real cap issues. $2 million a year does matter as every agent will know you overpay.
1 year, 3 months ago on Cowbell Kingdom Podcast Ep 100: The departure of Tyreke Evans with Michael McNamara of Bourbon Street Shots
This guy McNamara really get its. Bring Evans off the bench as a pure scorer for 28-31 minutes. That's his best roll.
Would like to see the teams work out a sign and trade. Vasquez and Anderson would be a nice haul.
1 year, 3 months ago on New Orleans Pelicans offer Tyreke Evans multi-year deal worth estimated $44 million
I predict both Jimmer and Thorton will be moved. Further, the Kings will Amnesty Salmons, because he has no trade value and is not the long-term answer at SF. The team will use the additional salary cap space to address needs at SF and PF.
1 year, 3 months ago on Sunday Musings: The Sacramento Kings guards and a complex game of musical chairs
It's not about assists with Tyreke. You can dominate the ball for 18 seconds and dish at the end to get a sloppy assist. however, that doesn't make the team better.
It's about ball movement and Tyreke being a ball stop and clogging the offense.
1 year, 3 months ago on Cowbell Kingdom Podcast Ep 99: Ben McLemore and the Sacramento Kings' 2013 NBA Draft
The poll is a little confusing. First it ask who would you take and then asks who will the Kings draft. I would take Oladipo if he was available, but I don't think he will be. Kings are more likely to take Zeller, McCollum, Burke, Bennett or MCW.
1 year, 3 months ago on Poll: Who should the Sacramento Kings draft with the seventh pick in the 2013 NBA Draft?
Also, Kings should get this Lighty guy in for a try-out!
1 year, 4 months ago on Sunday Musing: Kawhi Leonard, Jimmer Fredette and finding the right pieces
Totally agree with the analysis of Jimmer and his lack of fit with the Kings. I also agree that the Spurs do a great job of identifying the right type of talent for their system and cultivated/developing that talent.
However, I disagree with the premisses that Kawhi Leonard would not have developed with the Kings. Kawhi Leonard is everything the Kings lack and hard nosed defensive minded SF who keeps his mouth shut and know his role. He plays hard in practice and is only about winning. Even Coach Smart would have recognized that talent. He would have received 35-40 minutes a game and no doubt be the best over-all player on the team. It's not like the Spurs run any plays for him or anything. He earns his time through defense, rebounding and opportunistic offense.
It's a new era and the Kings need change. They need new blood. Salmlons is not part of the future and has minimal trade value. Holding onto Salmons only takes valuable minutes away from whatever players may actually someday be the solution for that position. The Amnesty frees up cap space and I believe the Kings can subtract his new contract from what they owe him?
1 year, 4 months ago on Poll: What should the Sacramento Kings do about John Salmons?
@rip17vietti Yep. This guy gets it. I would much rather pay $14 million for Iguodala than $10 million for Evans.
1 year, 4 months ago on Poll: What should the Sacramento Kings do about Tyreke Evans?
@Rawheat916 So he is not everything you want. You defeat your own argument. If he was everything you would want, he would already make better decisions, already shoot better and already be a better team leader to actually help get his teams some victories. He's been in the league four years - how much longer to we need to wait? And at what cost to the salary cap?
@Smittking I've played PG all my life, watched and studied basketball all my life and in particular the PG position. Tyreke Evans is NO PG! He does not see the court very well, generally passes to the open shooter a couple seconds too late. So rather than passing his teammates open like the best PG's do, he passes his teammates covered. He takes them out of rhythm by holding the ball too long and stops the natural flow of the offense. Name me an all-star caliber PG guard who can't shoot, doesn't have good court vision and plays lackadaisical defense? There aren't any, but that describes Tyreke.
Tyreke is a great drive and finish guy, but the league caught on and figure out how to defend him. He has not adjusted. He isn't be played defensively the same way he was as a rookie, so his rookie stats are almost irrelevant. He had some nice stats his Rookie season because he was allowed to dominate the ball, play monster minutes and do whatever he wanted. However, that was not winning team basketball. It was a lot like Allen Iverson at his worst.
Tyreke does have some value at the SG position, but only if he significantly improves his outside shot, gets more involved on defense and learns to pass on the 2 on 1 and 3 on 1 break. However, that is a lot of "ifs" for someone wanting the type of salary he is sure to demand. I would give him another shot at SG, but not for anything more than $8 million a year. IMHO anyone who thinks Tyreke Evans is a PG is not paying attention. Outside of Jerry Reynolds no one in the NBA considers Tyreke a PG anymore.
Overall the Kings roster suffers from selfish play and the refusal to make the extra pass. Isiah Thomas, Jimmer, Hayes and Williams being the only exceptions. Thorton, Evans and Cousins in particular need to give the ball up early on the fast break (Thorton & Evans) or when doubled on the block (Cousins).
Kings are very fortunate to have lucked into Isiah in draft. The only guy on the team who plays the game the right way - all the time.
