Like gift cards, it's a cash loan to Amazon, without any interest.
They're not tied to any other currency or basket of currencies after purchase. High-risk purchase.
But people will lap it all up, loan Amazon money in a high-risk investment... Because "virtual currencies" are gaining traction. What a joke.
All in all, I'd say it was a step down in UI and UX.
A waste of real estate on smaller screens, and it's "noisy". It's like the designers all had big screens in doing their work, and didn't actually use it on small screens.
Why do you keep sucking up valuable screen space with the large Pando Monthly promo, which actually is of interest to just a small number of users who might attend? Cut it into a third and stick it above the ticker, on the right.
Also, buggy response in Mac Chrome. Calls to action often don't work.

@ContentAdder Why did the underwriters struggle nearly all day to keep the closing price above the listing price, keeping it at 23 cents above? Sounds like immense desperation and failure to price appropriately.
