Unpaid internships are totally unfair.
Most people gets a valuable learning experience from the work they do. Their job helps them develop new skill sets, expand their network and gain credibility. They still get paid in exchange for their work. Why should interns be treated differently?
The real question is whether the employers benefit from the internship. All the companies I know ask their interns to do low-priority (but necessary) tasks that could have been assigned to regular employees. Interns sometimes require a fair amount of coaching, but they still create value for the company. There is no reason for them not to get paid for their contribution.
