I've said before and I'll say it again. I don't like Alabama athletics at all, but I'd play for Saban any day. He is a master motivator and knows how to push the right buttons. Incredible what he has accomplished. I just hope the Hogs can disrupt him every now and then.

Just an observation. If Jeff Long said it would be 10-14 days to name a coach, could that not mean that he has done his homework and knows who he's got (or at least narrowed it down to 2 or 3) and that he's waiting for the season to end? Although the SEC is complete, other conferences are not and he could be choosing among those teams. What do I know, I'm just a displaced Hog fan tired of the Gruden obsession in this state.

Who self-videos themselves and can be considered authentic and spontaneous? Not this guy.

It would be a great hire. He knows everyone in Texas, which is where half of the recruits come from, and his teams are always good on defense, and solid on offense. I don't know how committed he is to TCU though. They may be married for all I know. Good steal if Long can get him, but I think it's a long shot. Money will be there, but Patterson seems to me more than just money. No to Tommy Tuberville. Maybe Josh McDaniels of the Patriots or Art Briles of Baylor.

The Princeton Review asks questions like, "how many nights a week do you drink alcohol," "how many drinks do you have in one sitting." etc. What college kid who drinks any kind of alcohol or does any drugs answers those questions honestly? None. This poll is stupid at best and can only be considered credible if there is a disclaimer that reads, "All students surveyed are expected to lie to some extent so the results reflect universities with students who exaggerated the most ."

Let me say this. I hate Alabama from a sports perspective. The campus was nice when I went to visit in HS and I'm sure the education is as good as any. But, you gotta love Nick Saban. I want to beat him every time we play. Is he tough on his players? Of course. But he has their backs when it counts and I'd want that in my corner any day. I would have loved to play for him in college. Again, hate Alabama sports, but respect the heck out of Saban. I don't worship him though like Tide fans do.

Maybe Bonner and Clear should room together. They can keep stealing each other's stuff and "keep it within the family."

The best calendar solution to the last 4 teams standing would be to play the semifinal 2 weeks after the Championship weekend at a bowl site. Then play the championship 2 weeks or so after that (depending on TV schedule of course) at a bidded location. That would solve two major issues. Time for game planning and give fans an opportunity to travel to both games if they are able. Back to back weekends is too tough on fans and teams to get a good product on the field. In addition, college football would own the media buzz for the month of December with no lull which is usual until the first big bowl game. Just think about the hype machine (ESPN) in overdrive for all of December. Wait, maybe that's not the best idea.

@John at MrSEC John, you turned down 6 times the amount of money out of loyalty??? Did you end up leaving that company at some point or are you still working for them in some capacity? Your turning down jobs is a little bit different than this-like apples and mangos. I laugh every year around week 15,16 or 17 in the NFL when a coach gets canned. The players don't care-they're glad he's gone. The fans don't care either. The owner's happy he can find a new guy to win. But if you turn that around and the coach leaves, oh my lands! It's an atrocity. Why can't folks (read: media of all sorts) understand coaches leave and get fired and both are ok? It's happened everywhere. Mike Shula wasn't shown too much loyalty, yet if he left for another job the year before getting fired, he would have been roasted. Everyone will complain because that's what people do. It's business and a lucrative business at that. Things happen. The kid at Weber St. understood it, why can't you and everyone else. He's 22 or younger.

If the players are happy, and it seems they are with the tweets, I'll take this hire and be happy. We have a stable of studs who know Smith and will play with extra motivation. We all know winning solves problems and if the Hogs win big this year, recruiting will take care of itself coupled with a big name hire. The money will be there for a top coach and we'll have plenty of opportunity to find the right guy.
Can it go wrong? Of course. Each hire can. But I think it serves as the best short term solution to hire someone familiar with the program and players.
