@JQuest81 Hey JQuest81. BTW, I want to let you know that I really appreciate your posts here. Regarding the camera.... Boy, I wish I could afford a 5D or maybe even the 6D (because of both being full-frame), but just the cost of the 7D was a stretch for me. Got it on Thomas Island a few years ago (before I lost my job). At the time, it was cheaper than even Amazon and there was no tax, which was great. I love the camera, but with deteriorating health, I haven't been out shooting since late last year.  http://picasaweb.google.com/kanoneyez

Google needs to take a stronger position against Apple. It needs to pull all its apps from AppStore, remove support for iPhone and Apple computer OS's. Then lets all sit back and watch Apple squirm as its loyalists start switching to Android. Good riddence Apple--you did it to yourself. Wouldn't play nice and now you're getting kicked out of the sandbox.

@Haloruler64  @ShaneValentine Well, the announcement did say "Tiered and SOON Unlimited plan customers who have LTE devices." Perhaps an intentional leak about future plans. Just as voice went "unlimited," it was inevitable that data would get there sooner or later. And not be overlooked is that it is limited to those using the LTE network. Problem is LTE is not yet as widely deployed as it needs to be. Although my phone is capable, I do not reside in an LTE area. When I go to the Bay Area (SF) or Modesto, I have LTE coverage, but I'm not there that often.

If adopted permanently, it would be a great feature. I guess most users do not read the developer's comments that say, 'We can't respond to your comments here on Google Play. Please send email to ...." And it is obvious because you'll read comments from users that say stupid stuff like, "You never responded to my post" (Duh!). Unlike most users, I've found all developers that I've dealt with always happy to help work out problems and communicate with users. One developer was so pleased about a positive review I made on my blog regarding the free version, that they sent me the full-fledged paid version free.

Hmm. In that Evil is left up to each person to interpret, I suppose it is actually a good thing because to anyone working there, whatever they may personally consider evil, they can be motivated to watch their own inclinations. Personally, I've always found it baffling to state things in a negative way. The Bible's well-known saying, "Treat others the way you want them to treat you" conjures up a positive viewpoint encouraging positive actions. Google could have said, "Be Kind, Be Gentle, Be Good."

Corning may be completely honest. Problem is they are wasting consumers time because we tend to be cynical and skeptical. Why? Because we are also told by tobacco companies that smoking is safe, by the FDA that certain foods are good and then 10 years later that they are bad and then 10 years later that they are good again. What Corning should have done was to "ghost hire" an independent firm to test the products and have that firm publish their findings.

But back to your article, I appreciate your minimalist approach. On my anchored (main) home screen I have a clock/weather widget, world times and Google search. Then the other home screens are 2) email widget. 3) one-touch picture dialer. 4) Folders for apps by function/service 5) misc widgets (MusicPayer, MusicID, Waze and others.

@JQuest81  I agree with you that their marketing is very good. I do like their products, but frankly, after owning the Infuse and the Note2 (and one other before that), and then my wife also having had several Samsung phones, I've noted that after about 2 years, they get very flaky--won't turn on, won't turn off, shuts off during calls. I could list more. For me, their customer service is the most unhelpful people I've ever had the displeasure of dealing with. I've still got until end of 2014 before my next upgrade, but when I do, besides equipment, I'll be researching customer satisfaction.

But their customer service has always been rated very poorly, and my personal experience with their customer service is so bad, I've pretty much decided not to buy their products anymore. This just seals the deal.

@Haloruler64 I guess we can agree to disagree. I respect a person that stands for what they believe. I really don't think that Mr. Meyerson was as bad as you see it. I view his avoidance of certain questions as a wise business move. ATT used to say that they have a corporate policy of not throwing their business partners "under the bus" by publicly deriding them. Apple, from my perception, throws everyone under the bus--after Apple gets into their wallet. In the mobile arena, Microsoft is is still trying to discover what the customer wants.

Dima Aryeh (aka Haloruler64). I usually respect your articles. In my opinion, you are one of the better writers here. However, I think "bash" (in your article's title) is a bit strong? Mr. Meyerson has a viewpoint that is definitely pro-Microsoft. (I wouldn't expect anything less.) His perception of the competition was less than stellar, which again is to be expected. But the interviewer was also very leading in the questions that were posed. I would have worked for a thought-redirect if I were in Mr. Meyerson's shoes, but I'm not and he was put on the spot in front of a crowd. Yes, we all know that Windows' market share is not the greatest, but I thought he was tame compared to a famous character within Apple that declared thermo-nuclear war against Android.

Two things that would greatly help market these gargantuan phones are: 1) finally implementing flexible, roll-up or folding screens, and 2) deploy those devices with a bluetooth headset that fits into the device like the current S-pen does on the Note2. But a large slate phone bigger than the Note2 is not something I would personally buy because carrying it has become cumbersome and trying to talk on it very awkward.  (Yes, I've seen Sammy's concept folding and rollup phones--bring them to market already! In 2015 when I'm ready for my next upgrade, I am expecting that technology to be out.

This is really very funny when you stop to think about it. Maybe Samsung and others are trying to see just how much is "too much." The enthusiast segment will adopt almost anything regardless of how functional (or dysfunctional) it is. At the rate of 0.5" gain per year, by 2020 we should have 10.5" phones (hopefully they'll be roll-up or fold-up by then). Personally, I bought a men's satchel from Amazon just to carry my Note2 and wallet. (The bag is very poorly made. My wife has already had to perform major surgery on it)

Nothing like a little stupidity to add a little more senseless activity to human endeavors. IF, anyone did actually put their phone through the wash, it would be because they left it in their clothing (pants pocket or whatever). Second, the specs claim it can be in water for 30 minutes, it is NOT talking about agitated water, it is talking about being dropped in water. I could go on, but I think I made my opinion clear--these unscientific tests tell us nothing--as usual.

Interesting article, Dima. Like you cited, those most concerned with these stats are developers. The users are indirectly affected when keep an old phone for a long time and discover developers are no longer interested in supporting their version. I am a little surprised that there are still active phones with Donut, Eclair & Froyo on them. That essentially means there are phones out there that were sold sometime between 9/15/2009 (start of Donut) and 12/5/2010 (end of Froyo), so anywhere from 2 to 3 years old. Looking at the stats, though, they are very small. So that would easily account for the minority of users that keep their phones longer than most. Heck, I know of friends that are still using flip phones that are scotch tapes and glued together.

So as far as developers are concerned, as long as the majority of buyers continue to upgrade on the typical 1- to 2-year schedule, their happy.
