Great piece Bill. For those who are Gartner clients, my colleague Hung LeHong and I published a toolkit last year on how to discuss Big Data in the boardroom: http://www.gartner.com/document/2354915.  --Doug Laney, VP Research, Gartner, @doug_laney

Unfortunate that your sources fail to include the original source of the "3Vs" used to define Big Data: the 12 year-old piece on "3D Data Management Challenges" I wrote at Gartner (then META) in 2001. Here's a reference, for the professional courtesy of proper citation: http://goo.gl/9Mxju. Also note that while other's "cleverly" have posited additional "V"s unfortunately they are not definitional, and only serve to confuse people. Veracity for example is an important quality of *all* data, but it does not define big data and in fact is inversely related to volume, velocity and variety. --Doug Laney, VP Research, Gartner, @doug_laney

Great to see the industry finally adopting the "3V"s of big data over 11 years after Gartner first published them. For future reference, and a copy of the original article I wrote in 2001, see: http://blogs.gartner.com/doug-laney/deja-vvvue-others-claiming-gartners-volume-velocity-variety-construct-for-big-data/. --Doug Laney, VP Research, Gartner, @doug_laney
