@martinspribble I am sure he could call it something else, but then then need to spend an extraordinary amount of time explaining what he meant. The word "spirituality" does describe what Sam is talking about, just not with the superstitious mumbo jumbo which is usually associated with the word.

I think you need to re-read what Sam Harris says about "spirituality". He is not advocating duality but using the label to describe a completely materialistic phenomenon.
Great talk/article, Martin. Wish I could have been there.

@Herpert_Derpington Did I make any threats? No. Nice try though. Do better next time.

@Herpert_Derpington I see your so brave regarding your right to free speech you hide behind an alias. In any case, not much can be said to defend making jokes about a violent act against women. You are free to make as many vulgar rape jokes as you wish; just as we are free to point out what an asshole you are for doing so.
@thatfatbloke - exactly. Occam does away with the "god" thing since it has no explanatory power. We do not seem to be able to tell a universe created by a god from one which is not, so why do they insist on making the assertion?

What would a universe which was not designed by a god look like?
@blamer Why didn’t I just write that instead?

To some degree (and it pains me to say this) I somewhat agree with Tony Abbott's assessment. Predatory behavior of this kind must be investigated and prosecutions brought wherever they a found, but there is one overarching issue seemingly unique to the Catholic Church - what do we do with an institution which systematically hides, obfuscates, protects, and fails to adequately punish those who commit such atrocious acts? Not only are the victims of these abusive crimes long overdue for justice, but we must also enforce santicions and penalties on organisations which enable these crimes.
